Tone-deaf, but oh so tasty.

I guess tone-deaf comes out on top here. Needs a silhouette of watermelon to complete the picture.

I saw a lot of white americans getting offended on behalf of people from trinidad and tobago.  Are the people from there offended?

From the description I was imagining Communist art of a black left fist gripping a chicken leg.

Haven't you noticed, that isn't the question anymore?

It used to be, but now the question is: "can you imagine that someone might find this offensive?"
Then its intolerably offensive.

We'll never know because nobody is going to ask them.

Advertising is now global regardless if they want it or not. If an ad doesn't bother the local market but upsets a different market, that could have far reaching effects.

On the one hand, When Col. Sanders ran Kentucky Fried Chicken, they were the first large, fast-food carryout restaurant in the South that was desegregated. African-Americans who were travelling could rely on the Colonel to provide a meal without having to risk a lynching by stumbling into the wrong "whites only" diner. The Colonel is part of the reason African Americans are associated with Fried Chicken in the first place.

On the other hand. KFC screwed over Colonel Sanders, changed his signature recipe for gravy into a cheap sludge he hated, screwed him over again when he tried to start a new fried chicken restaurant, and have endlessly abused his likeness rights ever since.

Screw KFC.

In the Reddit thread about it, the folks who popped in from the area said it was fine and no one thought about it in those terms. The imagery is standard corporate stuff for the celebration. Basically as dumb as KFC doing a Flag and sparklers bit for the 4th here. Standard corporate bullshiat ad, but not offensive.

It's almost as if there's Google for such questions like this.

The answer appears to be: "People don't think it's intentionally racist, but they do think it's insensitive and dumb as hell."

A decade ago, this advert would have been empowering to the Black Community.

Hell, 5 years ago, this would have been empowering.

If Obama had had a drumstick, instead of daughters, it would have looked like this. And probably would have shared a beer with it.

Err - regardless of how you come down on this, I'm not really gonna go with, "Well there was a Reddit thread on it." as a valid reason to lean either way.

/equally so with Fark, mind you
//we all have our agendas
///you base too much of anything off of one group of responders, even big groups...
////it'll bite ya in the ass eventually

For profit marketing can only ever do stupid like this, it's just the math of how it works.

An ad has to be these two thigns all at once, and sometimes that will not be right at all.

1: A message that is of the times that people will identify with
+
2: a message that sells our product at the same time
=
a special kind of derp that only a capitalistic marketing driven civilization could create, when the message that is of the times, is intrinsically a bigger more important and meaningful message from a higher considerations head space bigger picture POV, being undermined by selfish simpleton, "buy my crap" marking message that is in fact the only reason the message was created anyway.

Someone - "What do people from there think? We'll never know."

Me - "The people from there that I saw (on other site) seemde ok with it."

You - "Well, I'm not going to be convinced by that."
