How people in other countries see what's happening in the US.

7-mins. Starts with a fairly light-hearted tone as you laugh at some of the stupid things that Trump says, but it ends with an oomph.

That is going to put it back in the running for leading cause of death in the USA.

If we hit 12,000 deaths a week it will be back to number 1.

Silly subby, even without corona, 15 000 people die every day in India.

Murica is NOT number #1... YET!!

We're back to counting in 911s. Good. I looked around for a metric that would be equivalent to a 911, but I gave up before finding a good one.

What I found was that over 9000 white American males die of cancer of the anus (not the rectum, the O-ring itself) in a year. But that doesn't include non-white males or any women, so it is shiatty metric.

Like measuring in Hobokens or Nutleys rather than New Jerseys or Rhode Islands.

Oh, it's number one, alright, in Coronavirus 19 deaths and cases.

Nobody can take that away from you, not even India with its near teaming billlion people. Because the rate per million is so much lower in India, that even doubling or quadrupling the number of "real" deaths is not likely to catch them up.

World's largest democracy is safe. America has this. The world's largest democracy may be doing better than China, which has 50% more people at the moment.

India may have more new cases or more deaths per day, but you had a seven month head start on the pandemic. They were nowhere in March and April.

In the time it took me to find the words to write this, just a couple of minutes, two people will have died from coronavirus in America. Two more by the time I've finished.

Folks that should have had a future. Everyone deserves a future.

Someone on this site described well the feeling Canadians are having right now: You know what's going on in the apartment downstairs right now, you can hear it, everyone can hear it.

But you can't do anything to stop it. You've tried, nothing's worked. It keeps going on, day by day, insinuating itself in your brain, simultaneously terrifying and mocking you for your powerlessness.

And you just have to hope that one day, hopefully soon, it stops.

11k a week is only half a 9/11 per day though.  It's not quite the numbers we were getting in April/May.

We're going to need to pump them up to stay ahead of Brazil, Russia, and India.

11,000, many of whom will die behind plastic sheeting or in a restricted ICU while intubated and sedated. No saying goodbye, no dying on one's own terms, no passing in hospice or at home. Yeah, many of them were coming to the end-of-life but I doubt this would have been the conditions they or their loved ones would have chosen

American fields an active playing roster capped at 48, two teams per field is 96. For simplicity we round to 100.

100x110=11000.

One hundred ten football fields a week.

Yawn. Let me know when we catch up to the destruction of the rainforest.

Kidding. Obviously.

I had just returned from a trip to NYC before this all started.

Seeing the beautiful park I had walked through the month before, and showed my friends photos of, operating as a massive field hospital where bodies were dumped into pits without ceremony, was indescribable.

I was doing a little math on how much congressional testimony is warranted by an American death. I turned to Benghazi for some guidance. Hillary Clinton was grilled for 11 hours over 4 deaths. That comes out to 2.75 hours per death.

I suggest we make Donald Trump testify for an equivalent amount of time. We can debate how much more time to allow for bathroom breaks, but without breaks that comes out to 2.75 hours x 150,000 dead = 412,500 hours, or a little over 47 years.

In confirmed deaths per million, the following countries are higher than the US: Belgium, UK, Peru, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Chile. France and Brazil are just behind us.

So I'm still not 100% clear on whether I should be comparing deaths to total cases, or deaths to active cases, or deaths to recovered.  I can argue just about any side there.

However, at the moment the US has ~4.8 million total cases, split roughly 50-50 between active and recovered.  Put another way, of the people to have had, and then not had, Coronavirus, ~2.5 million of them recovered, and ~160,000 of them died.  There are a bunch of moving variables here (death rates were much higher back in April, for instance), but a rough guess would suggest that of the remaining ~2.2 million active cases, there are another ~150,000 deaths coming.

And that's not counting future infections.

2020-08-04 12:25:55 AM
Belgium, UK, Spain, Peru, Italy, Sweden, Chile, France, and Brazil all have greater, or near identical, per capita death rates.

Now, I'm not saying the US doesn't suck, but this attitude that everyone else in the world did better, and that everyone else is looking at the US disapprovingly, seems unsupported by actual numbers.

Also, some other countries mentioned, like India, have done 15k tests per million, while the US has done more than ten times that, per capita. If you think that difference in testing doesn't impact the the numbers, I've got a bridge to sell you.

The US sucks enough that we can just be honest about the level of suck without misrepresenting the data we do have.
