We're back to counting in 911s. Good. I looked around for a metric that would be equivalent to a 911, but I gave up before finding a good one.

What I found was that over 9000 white American males die of cancer of the anus (not the rectum, the O-ring itself) in a year. But that doesn't include non-white males or any women, so it is shiatty metric.

Like measuring in Hobokens or Nutleys rather than New Jerseys or Rhode Islands.

I like kilobenghazis.  11,000 dead/week works out to 3.93 kilobenghazis/mooch

Fark_Guy_Rob: Belgium, UK, Spain, Peru, Italy, Sweden, Chile, France, and Brazil all have greater, or near identical, per capita death rates.

Now, I'm not saying the US doesn't suck, but this attitude that everyone else in the world did better, and that everyone else is looking at the US disapprovingly, seems unsupported by actual numbers.

Also, some other countries mentioned, like India, have done 15k tests per million, while the US has done more than ten times that, per capita. If you think that difference in testing doesn't impact the the numbers, I've got a bridge to sell you.

The US sucks enough that we can just be honest about the level of suck without misrepresenting the data we do have.

It doesn't help that Fark won't greenlight articles like this:  https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8583925/The-land-no-face-masks-Hollands-scientists-say-theres-no-solid-evidence-coverings-work.html

The Dutch have HALF the death rate of the UK, and it's because they aren't relying on the false sense of security of a piece of cloth that doesn't necessarily do anything.

There seems to be this delusion here that the US would have had South Korea levels of death if only the right person had been in charge; never mind that SK's exposure vectors were known and far fewer than the US, that the US doesn't allow the government to (at least openly) gobble up all cell phone data to do contact tracing, OR that the US is actually a nation of states with most of the power necessary to address the problem.

But, but, but Trump mocked the virus.  He said some of the same things that the media and numerous Democratic politicians did.  If only he had spoken in more somber tones about it, then the governors of states like NY, NJ, CT, PA, etc. would not have required nursing homes to admit infect patients, causing tens of thousands of deaths.  If only he hadn't been optimistic based on what was known at the time, NY state and NYC city officials would not have advised people to just carry on as normal and to go to parades and movie theaters and ignore quarantine rules in other states.

I said it in another thread, but now it's looking quite likely that the Swedish approach may have been the right one.  Their death rate has plummeted to near zero.

They avoided all of the shutdown drama, all the compliance costs, unemployment headaches, isolation problems, etc. and the US (482/mil) may still end up hitting their rate of 580/mil or even surpassing it.

I was doing a little math on how much congressional testimony is warranted by an American death. I turned to Benghazi for some guidance. Hillary Clinton was grilled for 11 hours over 4 deaths. That comes out to 2.75 hours per death.

I suggest we make Donald Trump testify for an equivalent amount of time. We can debate how much more time to allow for bathroom breaks, but without breaks that comes out to 2.75 hours x 150,000 dead = 412,500 hours, or a little over 47 years.

My mother (70 years old, btw) was complaining to me back in March that everyone who dies from Covid is having Covid listed as their cause of death, no matter how terrible their health was.  She mentioned her mother, who died a couple years earlier at 95ish and had been in terrible health for decades but somehow managed to live so long.  Her argument was that if her mom had died of Covid they would have listed her cause of death as Covid even though she was bed-ridden and had had no quality of life for at least 30 years.

I told her, "Mom, but if someone had broken into grandma's room with a hatchet and clubbed her over the head, should they not have considered that death a murder just because she was in bad health?'

Reading is hard:

Things to know about the data
Provisional counts are not final and are subject to change. Counts from previous weeks are continually revised as more records are received and processed.
Provisional data are not yet complete. Counts will not include all deaths that occurred during a given time period, especially for more recent periods. However, we can estimate how complete our numbers are by looking at the average number of deaths reported in previous years.

So what you believe is in 2 weeks it dropped by close to 99%???

As far as I have read, you don't die directly from Covid-19.  Covid-19 causes 1 of 2 types of deaths:

either a "cytokine storm" where your immune system tears your body apart

or Covid-19 weakens other systems (e.g.  respiratory or pulmonary) to the point where they can no longer sustain life.

So every death where the person tested positive for SARS-Cov-2 is a Covid-19 caused death.

Arguing otherwise is like saying AIDS patients died of pneumonia, not AIDS.

Man you're bad at misleading.  Wait at least a month before trying to pull a sneaky on us.

I'm not agreeing that cdc doesn't have valid data, and deaths were expected to drop when this got into the real world.

But, since that's your arguement....

1. The peak is 5,000 per week so even if the administration is hiding 4000 deaths per week, CBS' assertion is more than double that peak. [Fark user image 425x478]

2. What grounds does CBS have to make a declaration on behalf of the CDC that deaths may more than double their peak per week?

That graph is cumulative.  That red line is only for people aged 85+.  You also have to add the other humps to it.  So, it's about 5.5k per week for people 85+, +4.5k for 75-84, +3.5 for 65-74, +2k for 55-64, +~1k for 45-54, +a few hundred each for the lower groups.  According to your graph, we had a peak of around 17k for mid April.

Ah yeah, fair enough. Got confused by a flurry of corvus posts.

What is 11,000 then 3-5 times what we've seen weekly since june?

Ok, thanks. My bad, but the article is not about April, it's about this month.

I believe the more recent rows are ~4000 now that it's in the wild, hospitals have learned better treatments and pharmaceuticals are being made available.

So CBS is still nearly tripling to 11,000.

I suppose I could have chosen a word that made it more clear, but I was referring to the idiots who insist on going to parties, going to bars, or attending other events without social distancing or masks in order to stick it to the man and show they won't be bound by society's rules.

If only he hadn't been optimistic based on what was known at the time, NY state and NYC city officials would not have advised people to just carry on as normal and to go to parades and movie theaters and ignore quarantine rules in other states.

whisper in the wind: And Trump takes no responsibility. He should be sent to prison after November.

Technically, that would be January.

halifaxdatageek: But you can't do anything to stop it. You've tried, nothing's worked. It keeps going on, day by day, insinuating itself in your brain, simultaneously terrifying and mocking you for your powerlessness.

Canada could make a vaccine.  That would be awesome.   Do that and it would really help a lot.

lolmao500: Silly subby, even without corona, 15 000 people die every day in India.

Murica is NOT number #1... YET!!

Oh, it's number one, alright, in Coronavirus 19 deaths and cases.

Nobody can take that away from you, not even India with its near teaming billlion people. Because the rate per million is so much lower in India, that even doubling or quadrupling the number of "real" deaths is not likely to catch them up.

World's largest democracy is safe. America has this. The world's largest democracy may be doing better than China, which has 50% more people at the moment.

India may have more new cases or more deaths per day, but you had a seven month head start on the pandemic. They were nowhere in March and April.

How people in other countries see what's happening in the US.

7-mins. Starts with a fairly light-hearted tone as you laugh at some of the stupid things that Trump says, but it ends with an oomph.
