Fark_Guy_Rob: Belgium, UK, Spain, Peru, Italy, Sweden, Chile, France, and Brazil all have greater, or near identical, per capita death rates.

Now, I'm not saying the US doesn't suck, but this attitude that everyone else in the world did better, and that everyone else is looking at the US disapprovingly, seems unsupported by actual numbers.

Also, some other countries mentioned, like India, have done 15k tests per million, while the US has done more than ten times that, per capita. If you think that difference in testing doesn't impact the the numbers, I've got a bridge to sell you.

The US sucks enough that we can just be honest about the level of suck without misrepresenting the data we do have.

Would we have better numbers if our leaders had adopted mask policies early in the pandemic?

Yes

Are our leaders self serving infants that place personal advancement above societal well being?

Yes

Are we just stupid enough to willingly re elect self serving, society destroying a$$holes to protect guns and Jesus?

Yes

Wow.
It's like the Trump bubble is impermeable, and reality proof.
Question to any random Trumper: How right do I have to be, and how wrong do you have to be, for how long, until you acknowledge that I am right and you are wrong?
Difficulty: No name calling or personal attacks. Just an actual argument of some sort - a rational one.
Prove that despite me being right about everything that was going to happen, and you being right about nothing, that I am the dumb one.

For perspective, America's bloodiest battle, the 47-day Meuse-Argonne Offensive, saw a weekly average of 3,913 men killed in action.

We are closing in on matching the total deaths from World War I and the Vietnam War. At this rate we'll top 200,000 before 2021.

Unless/until an effective vaccine is developed, and even then it will take quite a time to dispense.

Unfortunately that means some percentage of those who get it will die. Many of them had pre-existing conditions that made survival from this more difficult. It happens. It's sad. There is little any politician can do to stop it.

Man you're bad at misleading.  Wait at least a month before trying to pull a sneaky on us.

I'm not agreeing that cdc doesn't have valid data, and deaths were expected to drop when this got into the real world.

But, since that's your arguement....

1. The peak is 5,000 per week so even if the administration is hiding 4000 deaths per week, CBS' assertion is more than double that peak. [Fark user image 425x478]

2. What grounds does CBS have to make a declaration on behalf of the CDC that deaths may more than double their peak per week?

That graph is cumulative.  That red line is only for people aged 85+.  You also have to add the other humps to it.  So, it's about 5.5k per week for people 85+, +4.5k for 75-84, +3.5 for 65-74, +2k for 55-64, +~1k for 45-54, +a few hundred each for the lower groups.  According to your graph, we had a peak of around 17k for mid April.

Ah yeah, fair enough. Got confused by a flurry of corvus posts.

What is 11,000 then 3-5 times what we've seen weekly since june?

Ok, thanks. My bad, but the article is not about April, it's about this month.

I believe the more recent rows are ~4000 now that it's in the wild, hospitals have learned better treatments and pharmaceuticals are being made available.

So CBS is still nearly tripling to 11,000.

the voice of raisin: FlyingBacon: People do die, not always from the virus even they had it

As far as I have read, you don't die directly from Covid-19.  Covid-19 causes 1 of 2 types of deaths:

either a "cytokine storm" where your immune system tears your body apart

or Covid-19 weakens other systems (e.g.  respiratory or pulmonary) to the point where they can no longer sustain life.

So every death where the person tested positive for SARS-Cov-2 is a Covid-19 caused death.

Arguing otherwise is like saying AIDS patients died of pneumonia, not AIDS.

There's a number of cases people die before the virus did anything.  There's so much garbage in the data that the numbers are farked up.  Garbage in, garbage out.
