I was just released from the hospital in NY (nothing COVID-19 related).  One of the most heart-breaking things I've ever seen was when I asked a nurse for something and said "sorry I'm being so irritable." And she responded saying "At least you have the breath to complain.  I'll take that any day.".

2020-08-04 12:29:16 AM
My thought is this.

Given the average age of people who pass from this (yes I know young can die too), it is primarily hitting the elderly. The people that grandkids forget about. So people are not fully taking it serviously since it isn't close to home yet for a lot.

Are California, Texas, Florida, Georgia and Missouri doing that now?
No they aren't and you're pathetic attempts at diverting responsibility from Trump are getting really old.

That should be terrifying.  Enraging.

If it's not, then you're not paying attention.

(Still from TFA is my hometown.  Pasadena CA.  Intersection of Colorado and Fair Oaks, on the Rose Parade route.  Kinda scary.)

There seems to be this delusion here that the US would have had South Korea levels of death if only the right person had been in charge; never mind that SK's exposure vectors were known and far fewer than the US, that the US doesn't allow the government to (at least openly) gobble up all cell phone data to do contact tracing, OR that the US is actually a nation of states with most of the power necessary to address the problem.

But, but, but Trump mocked the virus.  He said some of the same things that the media and numerous Democratic politicians did.  If only he had spoken in more somber tones about it, then the governors of states like NY, NJ, CT, PA, etc. would not have required nursing homes to admit infect patients, causing tens of thousands of deaths.  If only he hadn't been optimistic based on what was known at the time, NY state and NYC city officials would not have advised people to just carry on as normal and to go to parades and movie theaters and ignore quarantine rules in other states.

zerkalo: 11,000, many of whom will die behind plastic sheeting or in a restricted ICU while intubated and sedated. No saying goodbye, no dying on one's own terms, no passing in hospice or at home. Yeah, many of them were coming to the end-of-life but I doubt this would have been the conditions they or their loved ones would have chosen

And that's w/o speaking to the other casualties that won't result in immediate death but will nicely goof one up for the rest of one's life, both qualitatively and quantitatively... oh yes and we're all gonna take it up the a-hole to pay for the ongoing medical and productivity costs of others' legendary, inexcusable stupidity.

Someone on this site described well the feeling Canadians are having right now: You know what's going on in the apartment downstairs right now, you can hear it, everyone can hear it.

But you can't do anything to stop it. You've tried, nothing's worked. It keeps going on, day by day, insinuating itself in your brain, simultaneously terrifying and mocking you for your powerlessness.

And you just have to hope that one day, hopefully soon, it stops.

If you Canadians were smart you would evict your downstairs neighbors.

I said it in another thread, but now it's looking quite likely that the Swedish approach may have been the right one.  Their death rate has plummeted to near zero.

They avoided all of the shutdown drama, all the compliance costs, unemployment headaches, isolation problems, etc. and the US (482/mil) may still end up hitting their rate of 580/mil or even surpassing it.

My mother (70 years old, btw) was complaining to me back in March that everyone who dies from Covid is having Covid listed as their cause of death, no matter how terrible their health was.  She mentioned her mother, who died a couple years earlier at 95ish and had been in terrible health for decades but somehow managed to live so long.  Her argument was that if her mom had died of Covid they would have listed her cause of death as Covid even though she was bed-ridden and had had no quality of life for at least 30 years.

I told her, "Mom, but if someone had broken into grandma's room with a hatchet and clubbed her over the head, should they not have considered that death a murder just because she was in bad health?'

Crickets...

I'm a glass half-full kinda guy.  (Roughly) Five months, 150,000 dead.  That's only 1,000 people a day.
Isn't that much better?

2020-08-04 12:51:42 AM
The worst airline disaster in history was a collision between two Boeing 747s at Tenerife Spain that killed 585 people. Two disasters of that magnitude a day for every day of the week wouldn't be enough to match the expected Coronavirus death toll in the US this month.

US military casualties in WWI including combat deaths and those due to disease, accident were 116k. The US involvement lasted 20 months which averages out to 5,800 deaths per month, so we're going to nearly double that every week.

2020-08-04 12:53:47 AM

Fark_Guy_Rob: Belgium, UK, Spain, Peru, Italy, Sweden, Chile, France, and Brazil all have greater, or near identical, per capita death rates.

Now, I'm not saying the US doesn't suck, but this attitude that everyone else in the world did better, and that everyone else is looking at the US disapprovingly, seems unsupported by actual numbers.

Also, some other countries mentioned, like India, have done 15k tests per million, while the US has done more than ten times that, per capita. If you think that difference in testing doesn't impact the the numbers, I've got a bridge to sell you.

The US sucks enough that we can just be honest about the level of suck without misrepresenting the data we do have.

It doesn't help that Fark won't greenlight articles like this:  https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8583925/The-land-no-face-masks-Hollands-scientists-say-theres-no-solid-evidence-coverings-work.html

The Dutch have HALF the death rate of the UK, and it's because they aren't relying on the false sense of security of a piece of cloth that doesn't necessarily do anything.

2020-08-04 12:54:01 AM

jjorsett: King Something: 'Murica.

In confirmed deaths per million, the following countries are higher than the US: Belgium, UK, Peru, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Chile. France and Brazil are just behind us.

But we're #7 with a bullet.

I dunno but the rate has been way the hell higher even after we've come way down from ~4% to ~1%. It's merely a whole lot worse than the flu (and the long term effects make it incomparable) now that it was a super whole lot worse before.

Well, that was a depressing watch.

People in other counties care about Americans dying more than our own countrymen/women care about each other dying.

But hey, the stock market is doing great, so everything must be fine.

I also haven't missed a minute of work since this started.  If anything, I'm working more.  What people seem to miss, though, is this shouldn't be a choice between pissing yourself out of fear in a corner and being a complete antisocial who makes the problem worse.  It should be completely acceptable, encouraged even, do go about the essential activities that have to be done, but take extra precautions. In this day and age, though, it seems a larger and larger percentage of people want to end up on either end of the spectrum.

The worst month for US deaths due to the Spanish Flu pandemic was in October 1918 killing 195k.  That was before there were antibiotics to treat secondary infections, ventilators and a host of other advances in modern medicine and we still may break that record if Trump's wishful thinking and bullshiat is allowed to dictate our public health response to the Coronavirus pandemic.
