the Border Patrol's multi-decade ongoing strategy of funneling migration flows into the border's deadliest areas - at minimum, more than 7,200 people have died as a result of the strategy.

Call it what it is. Genocide.

That kind of reminds me of when they would raid *a* pipe yard where I grew up when they wouldn't pay their "don't deport my workers" fee.

What a bunch of arseholes. That's like raiding the Red Cross in order to prevent hurricanes.

These are the same folks whose members got charged with federal crimes for leaving water in the deserts for migrants. They were found guilty but the verdict was later overturned, if I recall directly.

But let me repeat: the federal government prosecuted and tried to jail people for putting water in the desert for migrants.

For decades (starting under Clinton), the US government has purposefully directed migrants into the deserts, hoping the inevitable deaths will deter other migrants.

We are the baddies and have been for decades.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

It's like the government is TRYING to get invaded by UN troops for crimes against humanity at this point.

Just like forcibly taking the children and giving them away to god knows who. That also counts as genocide.

It's already happened here. We just forgot about it already.

Years ago I was working for a company called Groove Networks.  Our app provided secure, peer to peer sharing of data.

We were struggling to find our place, and then along comes Dr Rasmussen, USN.  He starts using the app with NGOs to coordinate aid and information.  The problem was when the UN,or NGOs went in to a country to evaluate the situation and interview folks, sometimes that paperwork would be confiscated by warlords or officials.  People would die because of it.

Because of the encryption etc in Groove, he found that doing the data collection in the app meant no lost paperwork and no one getting killed because they talked.

I never ever thought an app like that would be necessary in the United States.  Groove is long gone, but maybe it's time to look into a modern take on the idea

Drop the Senate threshold to 50. Change all the rules you want. Change it back to 60.

Pass a bill thanking Mitch McConnell for the idea.

I'm sure the Religious Freedom brigade who have been protesting limit on church gatherings will be all over this in indignation.

Just kidding, conservatives are human shiat with no principles or standards.

Baron Krelve: Oh, ok

I'm trying to square how judges keep tossing out charges against No More Deaths (calling the government's logic that the threat of death in the desert as rationale as nonsensical) with the fact that they are giving them a warrant to execute this kind of search. Is this some local judge who is more sympathetic or something?

Change the senate rules.  When it looks like you'll lose the Senate, change them back.  When the right complains, point to what they did in WI after they lost...

I cringe at the term "faith based organizations" but mostly that is because they are defending a baker or some pharmacist who doesn't like icky gay people.

But here are actual folks helping the sick, injured and poor......LIGHT 'EM UP BOYS!!!!!!

I read an interesting tidbit-- there is a US Air Force base in southwestern Arizona rather close to the border. The maps which show migrant deaths in the desert do not show the deaths which take place on this land. I can't help but wonder whether migrant deaths on that property are made public.

The only union recognized to represent the US Border Patrol is the National Treasury Employees Union, which endorsed Joe Biden in June 2020.  All the others are social clubs.

This BORTAC they speak of is a very small, elite force on the level of Seal Teams.  It's who you call when the cartels have kidnapped a very important target, etc.  They don't ride around abusing people.   You can imagine they have lot of imitators, especially guys at bars trying to impress teh ladies.

Someone is playing a very vicious game of pretending to be quite a few things they are not.  Most likely they are not from around there.

re-publicans are 100% in favor of stealing kids from their moms at the border, and selling them into slavery to these 'faith-based' groups.

There's nothing 'humanitarian' about them, nor 'Christian', nor 'benevolent'.

"The only convictions the administration was able to obtain were tossed out earlier this year by a federal judge, who wrote that they hinged on "gruesome logic" that criminalized "interfering with a border enforcement strategy of deterrence by death."

The cruelty is the point - per, usual

Is that Davis-Monthan in Tucson? I had a relative stationed there a long time ago.

"In a June 2017 email released by the group last week, an individual who No More Deaths believes is a top official at the Border Patrol's national union complained that waiting for a warrant unnecessarily delayed the operation"

I wonder if this is why they wouldn't show anyone the warrant for this latest raid at first. Maybe they went in ahead of the warrant and only showed it after they had secured it. This is some scary stuff. I never thought I would see my country, a country I love and was once proud of, become this.

Agents moved through camp structures and arrested more than 30 undocumented immigrants bad hombre rapists with thighs the size of cantaloupes who were receiving treatment after trekking through the desert in the middle of heat wave.

I just had to fix that glaring error.

... can we get some goddamned blue-helmets in this place yet?

I imagine that the The Intercept has to watch what they say because so many readers will trash them for telling the truth, even while the same readers trash the NYT for using euphemisms.

I'm afraid I don't know the name of the place, I think it's a training range. That might be it.
