There were a few days in St. Louis County last week that hit 600.

They are playing footy again in Perth. I think about 20,000 people yesterday at Collingwood-Freemantle match. Only one or two cases in that area. (Go the Pies!)

Melbourne is another story. They have been shut down hard for an additional 4 weeks following the 600 cases there. I'm talking about full lock-down. Huge cash fines for driving around outside your home. They are working 24/7 towards enforcement of contact tracing. The new restrictions also include a night-time curfew in Melbourne between 8pm and 5am. My friends in the Footscray and St. Kilda neighborhoods tell me there are roadblocks and people not allowed anywhere near beach or vacation areas (Mornington and Bellarine Peninsulas... Geelong, Barwons Head, Point Lonsdale)  All restaurants are take out only. No bars, no gyms, no theaters, no church, no school, no university...no exceptions. Plenty of Aussies pissed off after stammering yam mentioned them as a country that was not doing such a good job.

I'm not surprising anyone here that Cheetolini is a liar and a global laughing stock. Perhaps you will find it refreshing that most of Australia thinks he is a POS....

My friends tell me it's going to be a long time until I get to come visit them again.  They are correct we were an abject failure at controlling this pandemic. Back in early March, my Australian friends (visiting in New Orleans) were contacted by their government and told to come home. They were warned they might not be able to return if they did not leave then. They also warned them that US was not prepared for what was coming.  But sure you orange diaper stain... "Nobody knew about this". Fark you and your "Ginah" lies.  Fark you and your lies. Fark you to the cultist and racists that voted for this. Fark you GOP for creating and enabling this.

"The only reason to be out of your home between the hours of 8pm and 5am is to get care, to give care, or to go to and from work or be at work," Mr Andrews said.
"We can no longer have people visiting others. We can no longer have people simply out and about for no good reason whatsoever.
"Anybody breaking that curfew, you run the risk of being caught and run the risk of being fined," he said.
"And we always reserve the right not just to fine you on the spot, but to take you to court - and then it's not $1652, it's actually $10,000."
The restrictions include no longer being able to leave further than a 5km radius from your home.
One person from the home can go shopping within the 5km radius.
Exercise is now no longer described as "recreational" and can only be taken for one hour and no further than 5km from home.
"That means it's fresh air," Mr Andrews said.
"Where you slept last night is where you'll need to stay for the next six weeks. There'll be exemptions for partners who live apart and for work, if required."
Weddings will be completely banned from Thursday.
"Funerals are unchanged for the wedding will not be occurring in Melbourne unless there is a compassionate reason, and there are often circumstances where someone may not have a very long to live, for instance. We will be as generous as we can be," he said.

Dear Dotard, Australia is kicking America's ass. They are tired of your shiat.

Dahnkster: Back in early March, my Australian friends (visiting in New Orleans)

You're a current New Orleanian? I've always read your posts but didn't know. Piqued my interest so I checked your profile. ER RN? We've met, I promise. Tulane, UMC, Touro, Ocshner...have been to all. It's not my overall health; am accident-prone. It's not just my motorcycle habit it's other dumb sh*t like fights that I don't start or breaking my big toe while trying to pee in the middle of the night. It's a miracle to be in my 40s!

My mother was, get this, a flight nurse. I have always respected her. As you can imagine she put her time in the ER. I've heard the stories and I think I get it despite not being a nurse. Salute to you, ER savior!

They have been announcing the future plans so there is a rush of people going out before things close.  They did this when they closed the bar the 2nd time, the required mask, and closing the big box hardware chain.  At work we now have to stand down our  admin staff but most of them can work from home since we are a mostly IT company.

The talking head on ABC just said "thank you for your sacrifice" in the most American way to the people in the lock down area.  ABC here is like PBS in the US and has about a billion dollar budget and is considered by the right as being liberal hippy commie press.

At least most of the ICU patients are not on ventilators yet and ICU isn't full but the medical staff is getting warn out.

R0 is currently 1.16 with last weeks lockdown.

Charity Hospital. 20 years. Full-time ER Trauma RN 7p-7a. Proud member of the "New Orleans Gun & Knife Club" (sarcasm).  Loved the job. I keep a cypress river camp in the Atchafalaya River Basin these days and a home in the Florida panhandle. So with all of that, explain again why they have to take matters a step further due to a surge in cases? I mean, if any of what they were doing was working, we'd be hearing about a dramatic decline.

Maybe this time without a wall of text.

None.  PCR doesn't misidentify.  It only fails when it fails find an infection because the area swabbed is clean.  It's pretty common to miss an infection with PCR because the pharyngeal cavity is more of a place where SARS-CoV-2 likes to visit than a place where it lives.  Lung biopsies would be far more accurate, but they're prohibitively invasive.

One guy was caught playing Pokemon Go (people still do that?) or they were travelling right across the to the other side of the city to "go to the supermarket". There was Karen who had 'done all of Brighton' and wanted to go exercise somewhere else.

The Florida city was named after the Aussie one which was the richest city in the world at the time due to a gold boom.  At that time ice was shipped from Walden Pond in Mass for drinks where it added about $20 to a drink that cost $0.10.

most people expect.
(when that breaks... https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus -> "view full report" under total lives lost)

The state of Victoria has about the same area and population as Missouri but only has the one major city of Melbourne.  The close other cities of Adelaide and Sydney are an 8 hour road trip away so there isn't the intercity driving traffic that is common in the USA.

I think curfews for this pandemic are stupid.  Authorities should actually encourage the opposite-encourage stores to be open for longer hours.  If their hours are shortened, as in a curfew, everybody crowds together during the few hours they are open-it is the opposite of social distancing.

In other words, lockdowns don't work all that well.

They did the first time around, they will again.

The original lockdown started Monday 23rd March and was loosened in most states 50 days later on the 27th of April.

[Fark user image image 850x545]

The new laws introduced in Victoria will allow police extra powers to enforce the lockdown which too many people have been ignoring.

By what metric are you determining their success?  It looks like things got worse after the lockdown period ended and you allow for time for critical mass to be reached.

Also, what cost was associated with all of that versus people that dodged the virus and didn't get it on the next go around?

When you "flatten the curve" you don't decrease the area under it - you simply extended how far it goes out.

At least they are farking making an effort. The only thing I am "smug" about is watching an orange POS pretend we are doing better than the rest of the world.

Sure looks like even with their recent surge, they are doing a much better job than US. But sure, lets pretend that the guy who called it a "hoax" and STILL says it will "JUST GO AWAY" is not a shiat-bag. So "Kangarooville" as you so eloquently put it, is doing a better job than "Lets-lie-about-it-and-ignore-it-and-do-as-little-as-possible-about-it-ville" is "winning". Also your chart is useless without context...

My aunt lives in Iowa, she is somewhat displeased with her governor's handling of the COVID situation, to put it extremely mildly.  The school district her kids attend is currently suing the governor over her order that all schools have to go back to at least 50% in-person instruction when the new school year starts.

I too live in Iowa, and my S.O. is a kindergarten teacher in the second largest school district in Iowa (Cedar Rapids Community). I can't blame them for suing, and completely support that effort.

She has underlying medical conditions, and although many would argue "just don't go back", the truth of the matter is that we need income, and teaching this age group remotely, especially given the socioeconomic status/demographic of her students, just wouldn't work.

I'm at an impasse on what should be done here.

Melbourne population 4,963,349.

Both have "600 cases"

What point are you trying to make, Subby?

I think the point being made is this:

Square miles of Iowa: 56,272
Square miles of Melbourne: 3,858

Melbourne has a population density of 1286.5  people per square mile. Iowa has a population density of 56.1 people per square mile. COVID Kim has found a way for a state with less population that's spread out more to have as many new cases as a major world city. Clear as mud...

When you "flatten the curve" you don't decrease the area under it - you simply extended how far it goes out.

This outbreak is localised to one city and state. All the other states have restricted travel from it until they get their outbreak under control and are still economically open. Graph below breaks it down by regions. The first wave was widespread. The second wave is a large local outbreak confined to one location. So yes, for the other regions, the initial lockdown was a large success.

Also, when you flatten the curve, don't simply extend how far out it goes. You do several things:

1. you do actually reduce the area under the curve and reduce the total amount of cases
2. you reduce the total amount of deaths
3. you reduce the total amount of hospitalisations
4. you reduce the as yet unknown risk of long-term health complications and disabilities that are only now being identified
5. you increase business confidence so that investment is maintained
6. you increase consumer confidence so that people spend rather than save
7. you increase economic activity as people go out and work, play, socialise.

you can't have economic activity until you control the virus.

until there's a vaccine, the only way to control the virus is with non-pharmacological means to restrict transmission.
