It has not been widely reported here, but foreign news correspondents are pointing out that police have targeted press during protests since early June.
Unless you travel frequently outside the US, watch European and Australian broadcasts regularly, or have friends abroad, the average American does not fully realize we are rightfully being ridiculed as a "shiathole country" and as a danger to the world.

Trump, Murdoch-controlled media, and the GOP have been telling their cult that the media is fake and dangerous. ACLU knows police and GOP HATE a free press...  I hope you do, too.

I will be so farking angry, if somehow the GOP and tRump get away with what they have done to the USoA.

All their Senators and Congressmen (is that still the word? or is it Congress Critters?) have to suffer the consequences of what they have let happen for the last three plus years.  No one has been in charge and the US has lost so much, not least of all 150+k people.

There is something wrong with either the US citizens or the system, and regardless things will have to be changed because what has happened is just farking embarrassing and criminal.  No one seems to be in charge, it seems like you are all living in a failed/failing state.  Please, please change it all, because there are many many countries that have made agreements with the US over the last 70 years that they rely on.

I'd say be prepared to get angry, then. It's pretty unusual for rich people to be punished for their crimes. At best, I'd say Trump - and only Trump - will go to jail. The rest of the GOP won't even have to leave office, much less be prosecuted. More likely, Trump will get a slap on the wrist.

Of course there is, but I doubt we're going to fix it without a major change to the constitution. I mentioned in a thread last week that, the authors of the constitution couldn't even imagine how powerful money was going to become in this country. We need a mechanism that ensures everyone, rich or poor, has the same amount of power. That's certainly not true, today.

This weekend we found out Trump had a pandemic plan, but decided not to implement it, because covid was mostly going to hurt the blue states. That barely made the news. Apparently, no one really cares.

Slightly off topic: I always liked the movies "Dave" and "The Dead Zone", but I can't watch them, anymore. They may have been realistic then, but they certainly aren't, today. At this point, I'm pretty sure Trump could use a child to shield himself from an assassin, and it wouldn't make a bit of difference.

You need to make a new Constitution.

I would suggest making voting compulsory. Sure it is a small infringement on freedoms, but all you have to do is get your name signed off, not actually vote.  Election day needs to either be a holiday or held on a Saturday. You need to removed money from the election and have a federal department that gives money to parties based on their previous votes. Of course your whole farking constitution needs to be re-written, because somehow you all decided that corporations are people ... oh what a surprise when the original document was written by white property owners (both slave and land owners.)

Serious I can go on, but your whole country needs a restart and a modern constitution that has been written by and includes everyone.  Oh and stop having law enforcement positions being a voted in position, if you do not understand just how evil that can be, well you have not read the news over the last 50+ years,

The danger of a new constitution is the people who have been working towards doing that for a long time.. to make everything worse.  To make women and non-white people into property again, and add theocratic laws out of the Prosperity Gospel.

In 1952, the RNC was the first convention to be broadcast live all the way through. IIRC there was some sort of legal controversy about it but the cameras were allowed in & the whole thing was bad optics for them. Democrats watched the convention thar year & when they did their convention, retooled it to look better for those cameras.

I bet we'd get more mileage by dumping the bicameral legislature and replacing it with one that has five houses - one for each 20% of wealth. (The wealthiest 20% are represented by one house, the next wealthiest are represented by another house, etc.) To be a representative, you have to be in the wealth bracket you're representing. If your wealth changes, so you're no longer the bracket you're representing by the next election, you have to give up your seat. (You can run for a seat in the bracket to which you've moved, if you want.) Legislation needs to be passed by four of the five houses.

Why do people suggest compulsory voting? There's no research to suggest it would make people vote better. The people I know who have never voted or registered to vote are idiots about politics. I'm glad they don't vote.

And the constitution doesn't need to be rewritten. Peoples United was a SCOTUS decision, grounded in others. We can either do an amendment or get a court that will overturn it (and its precedents).

The second thing is not dependent on the first.

We could easily make voting compulsory within the framework of existing law.  We wouldn't even need to modify statutory law all that much, since most of the stuff would just automatically be rendered irrelevant by whatever system was put in place to implement said mandatory voting.

Like... who cares if there's a ban on poll taxes or not if it's the government's responsibility to mail you your ballot and cover the cost of mailing it back?  The old regulations become somewhat irrelevant, at least for federal elections where this would apply.

// And I agree that we should do this.  If nothing else, the uninformed being spread evenly across every name on the ballot will steal some of the inherent safety-net given to the two parties, since if they can't actually make an impression they'll end up in a runoff (or instant runoff in sane jurisdictions that actually know how to run an election).

Here's the amendment I'd suggest to make voting compulsory. tl;dr you need to make voting compulsory but also a holiday extending over early voting. You also need a None of the Above option if compulsory voting is going to work.

1.) Congress shall make a law declaring a national voting day; which Day shall be the same throughout the United States. This shall be the general election day for all federal offices, for all statewide elections, for state legislatures & county offices & early voting for the same offices shall extend a week prior.
2.) The week prior to this election day shall be a national holiday, where employers are required to provide at least one day off with pay for employees to vote.
2a.) Certain jurisdictions have supplemental or runoff elections. Those elections shall likewise be a holiday for those jurisdictions, with early voting extended for the week prior & employers required to provide at least one day off with pay for employees to vote.
3.) All ballots shall have a "None of the Above" option added to the general election ballot (not necessarily a supplemental or runoff ballot). The particular consequences of None of the Above gaining a plurality of the vote shall be defined by Congress for federal offices, by state legislatures for statewide offices & by state legislatures or municipalities for lesser offices.
4.) No candidate for any office where None of the Above gains a majority shall not be declared the winner unless a subsequent election has been held where None of the Above shall have not won the majority.
5.) Participation in the general election & any supplemental or runoff elections shall be compulsory for all citizens. Ballots may be marked for any candidate, for None of the Above, or not at all, to complete this requirement.

Bullshiat. USA is a shiatty empire. But considering the history of just the 20th century, it's the least shiatty of the global empires. The UK was just awful, so bad they're why the US even exited. The Spanish? Sweet FSM.

The USA will go down as probably the least shiatty empire in average for most of its existence. Hell I live in a US colony and it's better than what the Spanish did here, and English did with their holdings a day's sail away.

I'm not touching the French on this today. Although there have been a few I did touch in the past with favorable results...

The danger of a new constitution is the people who have been working towards doing that for a long time.. to make everything worse.  To make women and non-white people into property again, and add theocratic laws out of the Prosperity Gospel.

If you are that far gone then fight the war that needs to happen, I will be one of the first to get on a plane from Australia to come help (though I will land in Canada and join their Legions.)

Dahnkster: It has not been widely reported here, but foreign news correspondents are pointing out that police have targeted press during protests since early June.

That is called unbiased reporting, but in reality they are owned by someone also.

And he hired someone to promote his agenda also.

And while media can be a resource, we gain our best opinions from people we respect.

Spend time with each other and learn to discuss. Discern. Decide.

Don't let big corporations decide what right or wrong look like.

Langdon_777: Clarence Brown: Langdon_777: I would suggest making voting compulsory.

I do not care if they vote "better," if I live in a country of dumb farks then I want to know it, everyone should have to vote, if they cannot manage that then yes they do not vote.

I really do believe in democracy, if I happen to live in a country of idiots then I will need to do something about their education.

The only people who actively fight against compulsory voting are conservative, corporate owned parties.  You do the maths.

He was a lifelong crook then, but he didn't have the blood of 150k+ Americans on his hands back then.

Trouble is, the "mostly going to hurt in blue states" claim was horse shiat. Now, a state Trump can't afford to lose is doing worse than anyone.

THAT is the BEST example of who runs America, and for whom/why.

The fact that NO ONE wants it overturned is the best example of why money is representative voting, not the ballot box.

I'll bet that if democrats take the house, senate, and presidency...

They do not rewrite gerrymandering, campaign finance or corporate personhood laws.

Because they like those perks when they are in charge, too.

Remember that time the Republicans flipped their shiat about John Kerry 'flip-flopping'?

It was a quite the "Joe the plumber" refrain.

Remember swift boats and $400 haircuts?  GOOD TIMES! Good times...

What? Do you believe that everyone should have a say or not?  Compulsory voting ensures that the most people vote.

The dead Americans represent a nuisance, but the state the economy will be in by the end of this month will be his biggest problem. If grandma takes a dirt nap, well, that's life. But getting evicted just as the weather starts turning bad is definitely going to focus one's attention.

Not Trump.

Or at least that what the propagandists would like you to believe.

My dear, I have been watching politics for a very long time and even as an Insider to the Democratic party. Believe me when I tell you, the Republicans usually are in lockstep by the time we get to thinking about the convention and the Democrats generally are still arguing. It's the nature of the Beast.
