I admit it.  You got me.

Not that I am favor of anything like that happening here but I would be interested in seeing the reaction to it if it did.

But, there's a brazilian.

Facebook has complied with an order by Brazil's Supreme Court to block the accounts of a dozen top allies of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro.

The group are accused of spreading fake news against judges.
However, the social media giant said the measure was a threat to freedom of speech, and said it would appeal against the order.

Facebook on the side of nazi trash, yet again. Zuckerberg really needs to be shut down, facebook too.

Facebook: we'll do it, but we are going to appeal because it violates free speech

Free speech: powerful, platformed fascists calling for violence against the parts of the government that are still somewhat legitimate

fark you Zuck

Even before I saw the BBC tag, I knew it wasn't America because
A) Government officials wouldn't work on a Sunday, and
B) the American Supreme Court wouldn't get involved in the political rancor of social media

That's a lot of supporters!

Remember when Facebook went public in 2012 at an IPO of $40, and it dropped like a rock before surging with an influx of rubles?  That's why they're pissed off, has nothing to do with free speech.

We are the only ones who have that power

There's like, a Brazillian reasons they should do this for Trump.

Trump is headed for Brazil - no extradition treaty.

Why?  Free speech does not extend to yelling bomb in an airport, why should it extend to Sean Hannity yelling bomb on our airwaves every day?

You mean go straight to the top, over the Supremes: Diana Ross?

But seriously, while you're trying the veal:
To whom does one appeal an order of the Supreme Court in Brazil?
In the US, the Supreme Court is the final & ultimate authority, and to over-rule SCOTUS we need undertake an Amendment. Is it different in Brazil? Is their Supreme Court merely penultimate?

Conservatives around the world are waging war on democracy.

That should be a fatal mistake.

Will we let them win?

2020-08-02 2:48:30 PM
So why not here in the US? Nearly all of Trump's supporters and super PACs just post fake news, and disinformation.

2020-08-02 2:51:29 PM
Facebook isn't going to block anything. The fake news and racism has gotten worse than ever over the past month. Facebook is doubling down. If they block fake news and racism there won't be much left.

Um, facebook, the supreme court is the supreme court (whether America or Brazil).  That's why it's called supreme.  Who the hell are you going to appeal it to?

It would be dependent on why it was ordered.  Telling anti-vaxxers and covidiots to fark off would be fine with me because they're actively trying to get people killed, and I see no reason why those activities should be exempt from consequences when other, similar activities get prosecuted under various provisions that cover threats to life.

It is absolutely astonishing to me that I and probably 99% of people reading the post immediately thought of the President of the United States of America and not some third world dictator

2020-08-02 3:19:44 PM
Facebook said in a statement that the order was extreme, "conflicting with laws and jurisdictions worldwide".

That's not how sovereignty works.

I was hoping to read about a bunch of KKK and Alt-Right hate groups being blocked.

Left disappointed.

Wow, this decision is one of the edge cases where it makes sense, regardless of the jurisprudence on freedom of expression.

The accounts have authority in the sense that they  re well-known as affiliated with Bolsonaro himself, so they are assumed to have an inside track.

They are attacking the legitimacy of the judiciary.

Together, that makes them an actual, direct, threat to the rule of law and the barrier between a police state and a democracy. The accounts are carrying out that threat.

I'm surprised that the accounts are so brazen. I'm pleased to see a supreme court that is taking the necessary steps.

Social media will never block those. It's pretty much Facebook and Twitters business models.

Probably would have, but it seems that some rich employee may have gotten sent to jail if they did that.
