Lando just seems to be a top bloke. The cynic in me says that of course his social media manager told him he'd get a lot of +1s from doing stuff like this, or working on his own car after Hungary. But besides that, he can drive, too.

Also, he qualified in that thing? He's braver than I thought.

Good for him.  Not that other drivers don't, but ones who are more hands on with the mechanical issues probably can provide better feedback to the team. It is more a throwback to the lower tiered racing where if you want to go, you better be prepared to help get the car ready.  I would think the team would largely appreciate the extra set of hands provided he has some aptitude for it.

Well, to switch to MotoGP, Vale46 got the nickname of The Doctor because he was clinical about getting the bike sorted and making it work; when he left Honda, he made a crappy Yamaha a championship winning bike.

I don't think Lando's at that kind of level, but those tweets still make him look like a nice chap.

Looks easier to wear while driving than Charles' banana costume

As opposed to George Russell, who is driving a car designed by a six year old.

/Seriously, they have the same engine that Mercedes and Racing Point have.  Mercedes 1st and 2nd on the grid. Racing Point 6th and 13th (with a driver who hadn't driven the car until three days ago.) Williams 15th and 20th.
//Russell did qualify ahead of both Alphas and both Haas, but that's more down to their Ferrari engines. But he's been penalised five places so will start at the back.
///Maybe a bit harsh on the car. It's still an incredibly fast car. But in F1 being a second a lap slower equals being a rubbish backmarker.

Random question: if Hulkenberg finishes in the points today, do they go to Perez' total? Or will we see 21 names on the drivers' championship points list? Or more, if there are more Covid-19 positives.

Even more random question: Is Hulkenberg under contract to Racing Point, or could he sub in for other team if more drivers have to sit out?

Hulk would get the points. Look at 1982 for example, where Patrick Tambay finished 7th in the championships, after being bought in in the middle of the season to replace Gilles Villeneuve.

And he would be a free agent and free to join another team later in the season, unless he signed some bizarre contract banning that, but I can't think I have ever heard of anyone doing that.

And Mikka Salo was out of a drive in 1999, but was called up to race for BAR after their driver was in an accident. Then he came back and salo was out of a job again, only for Ferrari to call him up to replace Michael Schumacher after he broke his leg. Andrea DeCesaris did much the same in 1994.

Drivers points belong to the driver that earned them, they keep them however many teams they race for in that season.

Team points stay with the team though.

So any points he might get today go to Racing Point's team total, but not Perez. They belong to him.

Hulk has his own points total. Kind of like when Schumacher broke his leg, he didn't get any points from his replacement.

AFAIK he's not under any sort of contract past this weekend; there's no guarantee he'll be next week's sub (though I'd be really surprised if he isn't).

I think you might be watching in vain, given that he didn't get out of Q2, and Stroll's in his lowest grid position of the year.  RP doesn't seem to be super happy at Silverstone.

Is it bad that I'm hoping Bottas or Hamilton get served some bad food so we can find out the answer to the age-old question:

What is stronger, this year's Merc or Hulk's curse?

Aren't they based at Silverstone? They're a worse home team than the Mets.

Might be a short watch.  He didn't get out for the installation lap, racing point still trying to fix whatever their problem is and start from the pit lane.

Never considered it before, but can you imagine the NDA's that a temp driver has to sign

Other than Ferrari, they are ALL based at or near Silverstone.

Assuming they can get it started before lights out, Hulk will start from pit lane and not the grid.

Given that Latifi is starting, he should make his first pass pretty quickly then.

It's not looking good, is it? Remarkable that something that fundamental can go wrong on an F1 car and none of the diagnostics tell you what's wrong.

They took the floor off the car, so I doubt he will be starting the race (they have 7 minutes to fix the problem and get the car back together).

40% chance of rain there today, and 80% of all Silverstone races involve a safety car at some point. This race could get interesting (assuming it doesn't turn into Yet Another Lewis Hamilton Sunday Drive).
