Wow, some backstory would be nice. What's the lead-up to this? I mean, not everyone here follows this kind of shiat that closely...

Not a lot of backstory. She said we needed "anti-social media" and I commented that Fark already has that market cornered. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Weird that you would think of Fark before you think of 4chan or any of the truly bad sphincters of the Internet.

This sphincter is only riddled with unruptured hemorrhoids.

Mike_LowELL: I've been to Fark a couple of times and they're pretty much the worst of the lot.

There was a particular and notable instance where I pointed out that there are very bad people on both sides.  I was trying to compromise in our polarized political climate.  But suddenly and without warning, the posters begin screaming at me, telling me how I am a bad person, simply for pointing out that the Axis powers had legitimate grievances of their own.

I explained that the Weimar Republic was stabbed in the back, but before I could point out the group of individuals responsible for this metaphorical atrocity, I received a message from one of the moderators to "please stop trolling, Mike, I'll buy you another box of Ding Dongs if you do, sweetykins", and it was in this moment that I realized my mom was such a sweet person and she was really looking out for me.

I stopped posting for about six hours and then started right back, knew my mother would cave like a house of cards, I must have eaten like three boxes of Zingers and HoHos on that day, goddamn, literally feeding the troll, if you catch my drift, lol.

Megarian is your mom???

Is she also an anti-vaxxer or a coronavirus conspiracy nut or something?

I don't want to do a deep dive on her nonsense but she belongs with the Matt Taibbi "I'm a liberal who hates liberals" camp. That side is convinced the Russia investigation and interference in our elections is all made up nonsense, either because they don't believe Russia is competent enough to pull something like that off, or because they think the Democrats hate Trump so much that they manufactured this scandal to take him down.

Despite this she accuses Vladimir Putin of doing a lot of things including murdering Andrew Breitbart, planting docs on Anthony Weiner's computer, and that half of Israel and Silicon Valley are Russian moles (including Zuckerberg, Peter Thiel, etc.). And she complains daily that the Russians are spying on her.

Sure, she sounds bonkers, but too bonkers for Fark? Probably not. She wouldn't be popular for pooh-poohing the conspiracy theory that the Russians manipulated the last election (which isn't the most politically expedient thing to keep pushing anyway, since the Democrats are currently insisting that Trump's concern trolling over mail-in ballots is tantamount to treason since it casts doubt on the security and reliability of the US voting system; they can't have it both ways), but she'd likely still find plenty of receptive listeners here as long as she didn't commit a serious party foul like outing herself as a Bernie supporter.

What ways are we having it? Trump broke at least the norms of our democracy if not election law by openly asking Russia for help in 2016. Within 24 hrs they obliged. He is currently sowing seeds of doubt in our upcoming election to whatever end. He was an asshole then and he's an asshole now. It's the same way. We are having it one way.

Your "one way" is saying it's okay to cast doubt on the election if your candidate doesn't win, but it's not cool when the other side does it. Wikileaks and Facebook posts didn't sway the election, Hillary's endless email scandal and bad campaigning did. She still probably would have won without that incredibly damaging last minute discovery of even more improperly stored classified documents on Weiner's laptop, so unless you're buying into the theory that Putin put them there and Comey was his willing stooge, it's a tiresome excuse to keep pointing at Russia. And yes, pointing at Russia and saying they manipulated the vote is absolutely casting doubt on the process. Just like blaming the recounts for W's first term and tampered-with Diebold machines for his second. Casting doubt on the process has been an ongoing tradition for decades, so while Trump is absolutely an asshole, it's no good claiming he's doing something completely unheard of by pitching his own reasons for why the electorial process obviously must be broken if he loses (but just as obviously worked with perfect precision when he won, of course). Trump isn't smart enough to have come up with the "blame the process" approach on his own. He's just taking what he's heard before and putting his own self-serving spin on it.

Of course, it's also important to acknowledge that the system isn't impervious to tampering, and there's some merit to many of the doubts. But if the system is truly broken, that means it's broken no matter who wins and it's never an honest outcome. Neither team ever wants to follow that line of reasoning too far, and they'd prefer that you don't either.

There is some legitimate vigorous discussion that happens here but I think they were referring to the types of posters that supposedly don't exist on this site, the kind who get their name from fictional creatures that like to hide under bridges & wait for their chance to ruin the day for people who are just minding their own business.

I have no doubt that there are people on here who are ready to debate in good faith, it's the ones who perform the equivalent of taking a steaming dump in the living room during a rad house party (then play ignorant to their own actions) that this site could do without.

No, I sinply brought up some things that have been said by many, many people, and still get repeated from time to time. I don't think you know what a strawman even is.

The reports of federal agents rolling around in unmarked vans and snatching people up is indeed disturbing, but has nothing to do with whether or not the electorial process has been compromised. If anything, it should be an encouragement to get out and vote and show that the system still works.

You said: Democrats claim Russia manipulated the 2016 election is a conspiracy theory (straw man, this has been proven). We also claim trump is committing treason (straw man) by casting doubt on a portion of the election process. Then you said Democrats can't have it both ways. I originally addressed this. It's one and the same.

You responded to my point with Whatabout. Your next post included the words Weiner, Comey, and "Hillary's endless mail scandal".  I responded to your non serious post with a bit of snark. You respond with many people are saying...This isn't a serious conversation we are having. I have a feeling you'll respond one more time because you strike me as someone intent on getting the last word. It's a risk I'm willing to take. Good day to you sir or madman.

You're right, it's not a serious conversation because you've made no effort whatsoever to follow what I'm saying. You were triggered by phrases, instantly took it as a partisan attack, and retreated to your bubble and raised the drawbridge (okay, that metaphor is a little mixed).

And now you'll wave your hands and declare yourself the victor because you oh-so-cleverly deduced that by trying to insultingly dismiss a discussion you never grasped in the first place, I'd almost certainly want to correct your deliberately ignorant summary of what you thought you read. In your mind, that's "See? Told you he'd have to have the last word! I know all and see all!"

Mensch might be a crazy con artist, but I bet she does a better job holding her own in a discussion. Here's a scary thought: Maybe she's actually too good for Fark.
