They'll turn those big guns on Biden the moment he's sworn in. Count on it.

They may be only wanting to get rid of Trump now because the oaf sucks all the oxygen out of the room and screws up their chances to seek their own elections in 22-24. And if they get back into a majority power, it's back to the same old tax breaks for millionaires/f*ck everybody else platform. As far as they're concerned, Trump's only sin was that he says GOP's quiet parts out loud.

So you would prefer Trump being reelected?  Because those all sound like problems for after Trump is gone.

And using the article's own "firemen" bullsh*t metaphor, I'd like to hope those firemen arrived to put out the fire once and for all and NOT there just to burglarize the place of all it's valuables once the fire's been put out.

If your house was on fire you would turn away people with buckets of water, because they weren't in a firetruck?

Who the fark ever said that I'd want to see Trump reelected? Have you ever even LOOKED at my profile?

What I am saying is that these TLP guy are kind of our friends now, but that's only because they know that if Trumpism isn't stopped, there's going to be no future for them in politics. Screw what a continued Trump regime would do to the rest of us. All they care about is their own prospects.

As soon as Biden is sworn in, these guys are gonna turn those big guns on Biden in 2022, with the hope of taking back the White House in '24 (most likely Romney, if I wanted to place bets). But they know they won't be able to do that so long as Donnie Two-Scoops keeps sucking the proverbial oxygen out of the room.

And mark my words, they'll be just as awful with the same trickle-down bullsh*t they've been forcing down our throats since the days of Reagan.

They're parasites, but parasites with enough intelligence to know that a host is of no use to them if it's dead.

What function The Lincoln Project should be serving is teaching Democrats how to have an "Attack Dog" wing for their ads.

Dems should be running ad campaigns on two tracks, 1 build up your guy/gal, "Our person is the best, here's all their policy, here they are feeding homeless and fighting for freedom, vote for us"

and then the 2nd wing which functions like TLP.

The first group should denounce the second group, and say they don't publicly approve of such tactics, while secretly high fiving them in the back.

If we pull out of this mess, I'd like to throw these guys a party. Have Joe Biden give a speech: "Thank you for your services! They're no longer needed..." just as a Blackhawk ominously rises behind him, air-lifting him out of the building, just above the shockwave of the explosion.

Or, we could just refuse to give them a seat at the table and let them sell their books about how awful and totally not Republican Donald Trump was. Either way, I'm good.

blastoh: I'm actually done with the Lincoln Project.
Their videos are great and exact what Donald Trump deserves.  But there are two things at play here.

First, these people laid the groundwork for Trump.
Second, they are partially doing what they are doing because they (especially Rick Wilson) get off on being assholes.   Wilson particularly has repeatedly posted about how much fun he has had in making these videos and in writing his attacks in Trump .

Third, these people are grifters who will follow the money.   Yes they realized there is a better long time future in fighting Trump and backing him, but that is it.

Those of you who think the Lincoln project is good should play a few rounds of the card game Secret Hitler. Fascists pose as supporters of liberal democracy by doing things that are democratic, and slipping their fascism into the mix. Secret Hitler is an amazing game for abstracting the tipping point of democracy in a way that illustrates the way democracy is co-opted.

The Lincoln Project is acting like the end of the game, when the fascists are taking over and the liberals can't figure out who the secret fascists are. The game is great because the alliances are not obvious at all. Sometimes the fascists betray the liberals and reveal themselves at the end. But sometimes the secret fascists are the ones at the table pushing the liberal agenda as hard as possible, even as their grip tightens.

This game should be reviewed by newspaper sections that review novels and movies. It really is that good as literature, and salient to our moment.

Politics make strange bedfellows.  Nobody wants another Trump back - so who cares?  Let 'em grift for another 3 months, otherwise we have the king of all grifters for another 4 years.

FatherChaos: The Lincoln Project only has one goal: Make sure Trump doesn't get reelected.

Once that happens, they will go back to being dicks who hate the things that make America great.

No, they are going after his enablers too. Their goal is to defeat Trumpism. Its chief proponent is Trump, so he is their primary target. But they are going after vulnerable senators too. And not in the primary, in the general. We can shiat all over the group once Trumpism is done. But until then, they are useful, if temporary allies.

I saw that and and will admit I was inspired. The number of 'Lincoln Project' threads popping up have me thinking there's a significant effort afoot by a submitter with an agenda to spam the queue with news about them and make them seem far more relevant than they are.

I don't have facts to back this up, but I believe the constant drumbeat of "Trump behind in the polls"  is just being reinforced by this "Republicans turning on each other" message with the end goal of depressing Democratic turnout.

So what? They're running savage attack ads that might convince independents who tend R to think about what Trump is. Of course they'll eventually end up attacking Dems, but perhaps they'll be able to drag the GOP a little closer to the centre and reset the Overton window a bit.

With the GOP as it is today, Romney 2024 seems way optimistic, I've seen Farkers float the idea that they expect Cotton 2024 and that is frightening; every bit as hateful and arrogant as Trump but not dumb as a box of rocks.

I don't think they're trustworthy over the longer term, I certainly wouldn't recommend donating to them, but if they are successful in convincing floating voters that Trump is what we both know he is, then let them do it.

/Obligatory note that I'm just a dumb Brit who spends too much time on Fark, so make of my opinion what you will.
//But damn, it's not just America that gains from getting rid of Trump, but the entire world.

I think it's too late. The cyanide has sugar in it and people are telling themselves they'll stop drinking it when the election is over.

Yeah, free ads saying things Democrats agree with. You are on the internet. You KNOW when something is free the product they are selling is YOU.

Do you think the Republican Party needs to atone for its sins in order to improve, or that they are irredeemable?

Again, TLP thinks this about you: "I think a good sign of being an idiot in life is believing that all virtue is vested in one of these political parties and all evil in the other," he [Schmidt] says. He rejects those who say he should be ashamed of the past: "The necessity for an act of atonement against conviction is self-righteous and smug at a level that beggars my ability to describe it in the English language. And I would suggest that they're part of the problem, not so much part of the solution."

YOU (or your fellow Democrats to the left of you) are part of the problem, but helpful, unapologetic Republicans like Schmidt are part of the solution. People who think Republicans are wrong are self-righteous, smug idiots. Keep spreading the word! God knows I can't stop you.

/Are we really going to have multiples of these every day leading up to the election?

Second, they are partially doing what they are doing because they (especially Rick Wilson) get off on being assholes.   Wilson particularly has repeatedly posted about how much fun he has had in making these videos and in writing his attacks in Trump .

Third, these people are grifters who will follow the money.   Yes they realized there is a better long time future in fighting Trump and backing him, but that is it.

Keep in mind that they are Republicans. They're doing two things that annoy the s*** out of me. One, they're making cheap videos and putting them out on a free social media platform which means they're making bank. All that money that they're collecting right now from people on the left is going to be used against those very same people in the next election cycle. Two, they are already starting the process of distancing Trump from Republicans. Fark that. They supported Trump, they put Trump in power, and they let Trump run this country into the f****** ground. They are not the good guys. Assuming Trump loses the election, they're going to go right back to being complete dicks to people that want abortions or people that have different skin color than them or people that want to pray to a different god or love somebody in a fashion that they don't approve of. Never forget that.

Ok? It's not like anyone doesn't believe you when you say they're shiatty people, That's not the argument.

The argument is it's perfectly okay to ally yourselves with shiatty people because they're giving you free stuff.

No that's a complete strawman. Nobody is asking you to ally with them, to like them, or to give them money.

We are on a battlefield, fighting Trump. They are on another part of the same battlefield, also fighting Trump and his tribe. They are helping us by distracting Trump, by making them use resources to counter, and getting Trump to make mistakes.

iheartscotch: The greatest grift of all would be The Lincoln Project convincing you that they were ever on the side of good. They are not.

Sort of like my Vampire run in Total War: Warhammer. The humans and dwarves allied with me to fight Chaos. I committed 15,000 skellies and 20 vampire lords. And then I watched as Chaos absolutely obliterated the humans. I swept in at the last second and saved my allies. But, I used their weakness to expand massively and, eventually, to crush them.

/ that is why you should never trust an enemy of an enemy

That seals it then. I will not vote for the Lincoln Project for president.

The argument is it's perfectly okay to ally yourselves with shiatty people because they're giving you free stuff. This is not what we teach our children about strangers with candy. I would like you to step out of the unmarked van and I am certainly not going to climb in there next to you because you say the candy is yummy.

I don't care if they actually do have a puppy for us to pet. It's not hard to get a puppy. It's not hard to film ads. They are pushing the message that all Republicans need to do is renounce Trump and then everything will be fine. No apology. No change. Status quo, or maybe a little worse because red states are steadily gaining in power due to demographic changes and loosening of protections for voters.

You are so distracted by the puppy you're not noticing the guy has his hand down your pants.

You're getting mighty unhinged here, friend

It's not "unhinged." It's recognizing the greater problem at hand.

You don't care because, in part, you benefit from that greater problem, and you fear change might infringe upon your convenience or your comfort.

Actually, it was a Republican strategist referring to Trump :

"Right now you've got to kill the alligator closest to the boat, the one that's going to kill you, and that is Donald Trump," says Rick Tyler. "Now, we can all view Joe Biden as another alligator or Nancy Pelosi as an alligator. I think they're little alligators and they're a quarter mile down the river. You don't have to worry about them at all. But there's this giant alligator who's going to eat the boat."
