The dreadlocks folks have been jobless in Jamaica since 1970. That's pretty old news to all Jamaicans.

How ironic would it be if Jamaica's 'former' colonial masters end up being the ones to make the nation celebrate markers of Blackness in their own people?

Welcome to 2020.  I suspect that to most people in a majority-black country, it's just a hairstyle.  Which hairstyle do we see as synonymous with 'Whiteness'?  Kind of a silly notion, right?

We really are more respectful of other cultures than most countries, though we don't believe that and tend to focus on negative things, on our shortcomings. The world is full of countries that (a) wouldn't hesitate to ban headscarves, for instance and (b) think we're nuts to worry about these things as much as we do.

Doesn't mean that we *are* nuts to do it, just means that other countries' cultures really are very different from ours.  And the vast majority of other countries have significantly less regard for non-mainstream cultures than we do

We more than make up for it with all sorts of other types of discrimination that are way worse.

Even in a country 80% black they still find a way to blame white people. Okay I admit it  this one was my fault. I made a few phone calls and got the kid banned from school because of her hair. I was bored and the WiFi was down I didn't mean for it to go this far.

American stereotypes of ganja-smoking Rastafarians to the contrary, many Jamaicans are very, very socially conservative, belong to Baptist churches that are like American ones only with more music and singing, and very much subscribe to respectability politics.  My girlfriend is Jamaican-American and was raised in such a household.  She doesn't talk to her parents much any more.

It's only about race in that they are attributing the prejudice against dreadlocks to being a remnant of colonialism it's cultural rather than a literal racial issue. Jamaica is rather conservative and dreadlocks are considered kinda dumpy and unprofessional or worse.

Unless you have naturally curly hair, starting dreads is a tricky business that can require putting things on your head that won't wash out.  Floofy-headed non-Black people can do it, but if the hair is straight or only wavy please for the love of god think twice.  Very rarely does it turn out well.

If you've got straight hair, roll with it.  Enjoy the angled styles it allows.  If you've got waves have fun with layering effects.  With tighter curls you can rock dreads, magnificent Afros, and Old Testament Prophet coiffures that make you looks like lions.

Respect the hair you're born with, and it will pay you back seven-fold.

This is the Jamaican Supreme Court that ruled dreadlocks can be prohibited by the school. If this ever happened in the United States, the NAACP and ACLU would step in and their primary argument would be racial discrimination.

Expect a reversal and tons of blow back for this decision.

Yeah. Sometimes I use it.

It goes to show that this might be rich v. poor here, or cultural things, or Facebook, or something, and not about race at all. I stand corrected and confused.

Not knowing that phrase, I Wikipedia'ed it, and the most concrete explanation I got was "...Black individuals practicing respectability politics are stereotyped as being most concerned with laziness, intellectual inferiority, violence, and immorality."  Does that fit your GF's parents?

You're kidding right? Jamaica legalized weed right after Canada. I was there in 2018

The problem is the bush medicine practiced by the Rasta's. Jungle tea cure everyting mon.
This Trump supporter/science denying dumb. Jamaica loses people every year to Dengue Fever. They know about plagues. This apparent heavy handedness is the only way the gov't thinks that they can deal with it.

They want people to go to the hospital, not the bushman.

Corruption in Jamaica makes Trump look like a boy scout which has eroded public confidence too.

Really sad about that because the country is amazing and most people are simply wonderful!

The SCOJ agreed that this hair style poses a health risk, which is why the school banned the student. I didn't read the decision, but I really hope they wrote, "it's only hair. Don't be an idiot."

from what i read, the ban was merited because of lack of hygiene associated with the dreads.  nowhere was it mentioned that there is a dreadlock ban, if anything it is a ban of unhygenic/dirty af practices.  clean your damned head so that the people around you dont have to smell your nasty b.o. and nobody will care what you do with your hair.

The Root doesn't write for black people as a whole.

They write primary for hyper woke yet tunnel visioned black intellectuals and white liberals in academia that follow them.

And as other Farkers alluded to, skin color doesn't necessarily translate to more liberal societies: Jamaica isn't that liberal of a country in general. A lot of your average Jamaican's political stances would line up with the standard Republican stances.
