It's weird how close to disaster the US feels.

Will the US electorate vote against tyranny... or for it?

If Trump loses, will he abide by that vote.... or try to fight it?

If Trump fights the vote, will Ruth still be on the SCOTUS?

We're basically at flip a coin... heads you're a democracy, tails you aren't.

God, this is f*cking terrifying, her continued illness.  I'm not sure any more that she can hang on until January 21.  And if she can't, McConnell already has a young far-right judge lined up for immediate confirmation.  I predict it would take maybe 3 weeks, tops.  Probably more like 2, since they can change the rules at will with a simple majority.

shiat.

LOL, and I've yoinked it for future use if that's OK.

And she really is that tough. Just the pancreatic cancer bit is impressive. My friend's mom was diagnosed with it and died maybe 45 days later. And even though doctors are supposed to be objective, you just KNOW that a few of them are thinking, "You CAN'T die before the January."

In a prefect world, Thomas, Alito and Kavanaugh drop dead 45 minutes after Biden is sworn in. RBG retires but lives another decade. Biden nominates four 30  year old clones of Thurgood Marshall. John Roberts, sensing that his judicial legacy will be forever tainted, steps down. Joe nominates everyone's pal B-Rock the Islamic Shock as Head Negro In Charge of Justice.

My MIL passed away two years ago.  We had a memorial service for her, at which I said Kaddish for her before an old college chum of her spoke.  That Chum was RBG.  I got to hang out with her (and her son and daughter-in-law) in the green room before show time.  She was very...quiet.

You don't actually believe that because no one does.  McConnell can and will schedule a lame duck confirmation vote - within hours of RBG's death.  In fact, he's probably already got someone figured out and the right number of votes to push them through.

This book about RBG is good for teenagers and middle schoolers. If you have a girl in your family who is paying attention to the news, you might buy her this book for the role model and also to explain why people care about RBG so much. (I bought it because I was curious about RBG's pop culture image).

Elections have consequences.

Maybe this can be a lesson Americans internalise for the long haul. But I doubt it...

Then the stupidity will start with either impeaching judges or padding the Supreme Court with each super majority...

The Perineum Falcon: And if she passes before the election, Donnie will contest the results and. . .let's not go down that road.

Benevolent Misanthrope: Animatronik: She only has to hang on until November. McConnell wont schedule a lame duck confirmation vote.

natazha: May she live to retire on January 21st3, 2021 to spend time with her great grand and great-great grand kids.

I am also fine with her keeping her seat for a couple more years.

/FT4Benevolent Misanthrope and natazha. Trump's term ends at noon EDT on January 20, not 21, but that doesn't matter because the new Congress is sworn in and seated on January 3. If the Dems take the Senate as is well within the realm of possibility, Moscow Miatch and other GOPers will no longer be in any position to confirm whoever Trump nominates if the worst happens during those three weeks. If McGrath wins, Miatch would be out regardless.

Take. The. Senate. Majority Leader Warren would invoke the POTUS-Elect Biden Rule as (mis)interpreted by Miatch. Not even a hearing for whoever Trump nominates.

By the way, Senator Cottonhead in Arkansas is not running unopposed. It's true that the Democratic "challenger" turned out to be yet another secret GOPer in the Arkansas Dem ranks (how do they keep doing that!?) and dropped out hours after the deadline for the DCCC to have a replacement, but there is a Libertarian Party candidate, and despite that, he seems to be quite a decent guy who'd definitely make a better Senator than Cotton. He's black, too, which'd give Arkansas's black voters an alternative to picking Cotton.

She's too dedicated to die. I'm not sure she has an angry bone in her body.

On the other hand, to be a fly on the wall in her home when she comes across the latest bullshiat from Trump or his minions, or Justice Thomas, we might get a different impression

I'm not sure what your point is.

The new Senate comes to order before Inauguration Day, so assuming the Dems won back control, Trump couldn't make a last minute appointment.

And if RBG died during the lame duck session, I imagine there are enough parliamentary tactics the Democrats could use to burn time.

I hope she lives but I don't want to prolong her suffering. No one should have to bear that. And no one should have to be asked that.
Even so, the burden is on her. But we shouldn't have a system so fragile it depends on one frail old woman or everything goes to hell. The wide majority of SC justices were nominated by GOP presidents despite having lost the popular vote six out of the last seven elections.
We need to change that come the election. Expand the Supreme Court, put in term limits, all that.Biden apparently doesn't support it, currently, but he can be reasoned with. What little credibility the Supreme Court may have is literally hanging on one aged heartbeat. That's intolerable.
