I can't see her name in a headline without my heart skipping a beat knowing one of these days it won't be positive news. I don't think most people have any real clue about how far reaching SCOTUS power goes. It affects all of our daily lives. We need a balanced court.

Benevolent Misanthrope: God, this is f*cking terrifying, her continued illness.  I'm not sure any more that she can hang on until January 21.  And if she can't, McConnell already has a young far-right judge lined up for immediate confirmation.  I predict it would take maybe 3 weeks, tops.  Probably more like 2, since they can change the rules at will with a simple majority.

shiat.

She only has to hang on until November. McConnell wont schedule a lame duck confirmation vote.

sinner4ever: Meanwhile Joe Biden is to the right of Justice Roberts.
That seat is racing right no matter who wins.

How do you figure that, with specifics?

Since we live in the worst timeline I expect her to die... sad as it is.

I'm not buying these trips to the "hospital'.  She's going to the taxidermist.

You don't actually believe that because no one does.  McConnell can and will schedule a lame duck confirmation vote - within hours of RBG's death.  In fact, he's probably already got someone figured out and the right number of votes to push them through.

Pipkin E: The Lone Gunman: Not that I'm wishing death upon her, but I'm curious to see what would happen if she passed on Inauguration Day. Who would shiz themselves more, Trump, McConnell or the entire Federalist Society?

The entire Federalist Society.

Neither Whorange Julius Caesar nor Yertle will be in ofice that day.

That's why I wouldn't want her to pass two days before. Either way, the day after there's a new President, she need to retire.

I'm not sure what your point is.

The new Senate comes to order before Inauguration Day, so assuming the Dems won back control, Trump couldn't make a last minute appointment.

And if RBG died during the lame duck session, I imagine there are enough parliamentary tactics the Democrats could use to burn time.

You want to take that chance?

RBG to Death every time this happens: "Not until the enemies of America face justice."

Death: "I can make it happen. Just legalize guillotines again."

RBG: "Tempting, but no. See you Thursday for poker, right?"

Death: "Yeah. I'll bring those lemon bars you like."

I hope she lives but I don't want to prolong her suffering. No one should have to bear that. And no one should have to be asked that.
Even so, the burden is on her. But we shouldn't have a system so fragile it depends on one frail old woman or everything goes to hell. The wide majority of SC justices were nominated by GOP presidents despite having lost the popular vote six out of the last seven elections.
We need to change that come the election. Expand the Supreme Court, put in term limits, all that.Biden apparently doesn't support it, currently, but he can be reasoned with. What little credibility the Supreme Court may have is literally hanging on one aged heartbeat. That's intolerable.

CSB:
My MIL passed away two years ago.  We had a memorial service for her, at which I said Kaddish for her before an old college chum of her spoke.  That Chum was RBG.  I got to hang out with her (and her son and daughter-in-law) in the green room before show time.  She was very...quiet.

May she live to retire on January 21st, 2021 to spend time with her great grand and great-great grand kids.

I am also fine with her keeping her seat for a couple more years.

SomeAmerican: It's weird how close to disaster the US feels.

Will the US electorate vote against tyranny... or for it?

If Trump loses, will he abide by that vote.... or try to fight it?

If Trump fights the vote, will Ruth still be on the SCOTUS?

We're basically at flip a coin... heads you're a democracy, tails you aren't.

This is what freedom looks like to Republicans. They're the only ones who get any.

Elections have consequences.

Maybe this can be a lesson Americans internalise for the long haul. But I doubt it...

Then the stupidity will start with either impeaching judges or padding the Supreme Court with each super majority...

The Perineum Falcon: And if she passes before the election, Donnie will contest the results and. . .let's not go down that road.

/FT4Benevolent Misanthrope and natazha. Trump's term ends at noon EDT on January 20, not 21, but that doesn't matter because the new Congress is sworn in and seated on January 3. If the Dems take the Senate as is well within the realm of possibility, Moscow Miatch and other GOPers will no longer be in any position to confirm whoever Trump nominates if the worst happens during those three weeks. If McGrath wins, Miatch would be out regardless.

Take. The. Senate. Majority Leader Warren would invoke the POTUS-Elect Biden Rule as (mis)interpreted by Miatch. Not even a hearing for whoever Trump nominates.

By the way, Senator Cottonhead in Arkansas is not running unopposed. It's true that the Democratic "challenger" turned out to be yet another secret GOPer in the Arkansas Dem ranks (how do they keep doing that!?) and dropped out hours after the deadline for the DCCC to have a replacement, but there is a Libertarian Party candidate, and despite that, he seems to be quite a decent guy who'd definitely make a better Senator than Cotton. He's black, too, which'd give Arkansas's black voters an alternative to picking Cotton.

I'm sure she'll be on life support or head in a jar (a'la Futurama) to stop this nonsense.  She rox.
