The army recommended him for promotion to colonel so all he had to do was stick it out until Trump was gone and he would have gotten it. It seems amazingly shortsighted to resign because you would have to wait a year for a major promotion.

Even if you have to deal with a constant stream of invective and vile actions on a daily basis?  Sometimes for your mental health and safety you have to step away from a job you love.

If he was serious about defending our nation like he says here, he would need to have a position of power to be able to do it. He did the right thing by testifying, that was admirable, but if "bullying" is the worst he is experiencing and he gave up being a Colonel for it I have to ask, is he really making the sacrifice for the greater good here? If he stuck it out until the election then he could have been granted the power to do what he says he wants to do. I want men of honor like him in positions of power especially since he is also an expert on Russia during a time when Russia is attacking our democracy. If all he had to do was withstand a little "invective" in the workplace for a while to get that position of power then I have to wonder why he didn't do it. If it turns out he's running for office I guess I'll have my answer.

The problem for Vindman - and alas, for all of us really - isn't that Trump goes away in January. The problem is that there will be no way to de-Trumpify America, after. There will still be millions of sniveling little bootlickers and some of them will inevitably be in positions of authority. Vindman's colleagues are shot through with trumpery bullshiat and how does he ever get promoted general with the US Senate composed of fearful old Trumpers?

He won't be the last. A lot of us are going to have problems. Most of those won't be as clean-lined or as public and you can bet your last dollar the consequences will fall disproportionately on women, people of color, LGBTQ, basically anyone who doesn't look trumpy enough. "Oh gee that's really a shame, huh. Too bad you libs voted for Sleepy Joe I guess." They are going to punish you for Trump's endless failure.

Thank you for actually telling me what issues you have with what I said unlike everyone else. That is a valid point, because Trump showed he wants Vindman punished, anyone in the cult of Trump will want him punished and that cult won't go away if Trump loses and many members of the military even high up will be in that cult. He probably could have gotten Colonel but he still would have had to put up with lots of bullshiat so he is walking away. Makes sense.

That's called constructive dismissal.

Another way this is done is called mobbing. The boss picks a ringleader to rile the other employees up against the one who they would like to see quit. The group works together to make the victim's life hell. It's extremely psychologically damaging. I'm still suffering and it's been 4 years since I quit. Vindman must be made of strong stuff.

Book Review

*Weak with a disappointing ending

Although the trolling started quite strong with the mention of "violated military rules" it soon fell back to the predictable monologue of simple contradiction.  Multiple uses of "He", the masculine third-person, singular personal pronoun (nominative case) suggested knowledge or intellectual capacity, but sadly never withstood any real scrutiny once we hit the objective clauses.  There was a brief flurry of transitive alliteration with the use of "Vindman was vindictive", but again, it was a spurious and false signal of literacy.  Overall it was a rushed and hugely unprepared troll (sadly becoming more utilized these days) and fell far short of the standard expected from the Internet Research Agency.  The overall poor standard indicates this was probably written by a person, rather than using an Russian approved algorithm.  Lesson learned I hope tovarich!

Calling Tammy Duckworth a republican was pretty gross. The woman gives up both her legs for this country, says "I ain't done yet", serves in the US Senate, and then proceeds to stick her titanium leg up the ass of those who need it, and you say she's a Republican.

I will admit that was probably unfair to her. I find her nationalism to be alarming but she's not a republican.

SonOfSpam: one of Ripley's Bad Guys: AntiNerd:  This is why many lieutenant colonels retire once they reach 20 years in the Army, because if they're not on the colonels list the first time out of the box, they know their careers are effectively over.

My ex FIL retired out as a light colonel, Army Chemical Corps.  He said pretty much exactly this ^^^

He was a wonkish dude in a evaporating field.

He's doing a great job of not being seen.

Ooo.  Someone is running for Congress.

Good.

Biden should make him Joints Chiefs of Staff...out of spite.

Appoint him as secretary of the army.

Vindman-Polis 2024.

Vindman was born in the Ukraine, so he can't be President.  (Too bad, since he's got a twin brother, which would let them do something absurd with it, and give the conspiracy nuts endless fodder.)

I'm wondering whether he goes into business as a lobbyist or whether he gets an "expert" gig on either Fox News or CNN.

Maybe we can pass the 61st Amendment due to his popularity...

fernt: He knowingly violated military rules.

He violated the chain of command and lied about it.

He was willfully insubordinate.

He lied under oath about not knowing the identity of the whistleblower.

Vindman was vindictive due to his own Trump Hate agenda. He's lucky he wasn't court martialed.

I was wondering what the talking points would be.

fernt, you are on the wrong side of history, the wrong side of humanity, the wrong side of reality, and the wrong side of whatever deity may exist. I'd ask for God to have mercy on your soul but I'm not convinced you have one.

My Klezmer Metal Cover Band:

The problem for Vindman - and alas, for all of us really - isn't that Trump goes away in January. The problem is that there will be no way to de-Trumpify America, after.

It's going to take a long time; we haven't De-Confederatized America yet either.  But one advantage of a cult of personality is that the personality's going to be gone quickly, though the years of Newt Gingrich and Karl Rove promoting divisiveness and hatred that made Trump possible are still with us.

And speaking of Klezmer metal cover bands, have you heard The Klezmer Mountain Boys, doing klezmer bluegrass?  (There are also bluegrass bands doing Pink Floyd, first the Austin Lounge Lizards and then Poor Man's Whiskey's "Dark Side of the Moon ... Shine".)

Nonpo: Porkbelly: Nonpo: The army recommended him for promotion to colonel so all he had to do was stick it out until Trump was gone and he would have gotten it. It seems amazingly shortsighted to resign because you would have to wait a year for a major promotion.

You have an amazing ability to sound remarkably stupid, you must have learned it from trump.

If you have an issue with something I have said, kindly explain what it is.

Oh, just about every post you've ever made suggests you are a few french fries short of a happy meal, and calling the Colonel short-sighted, and being, well, mostly wrong all the time.

This. Hopefully as a general, though I don't know if it's possible to hop past the full colonel position during peacetime.

I once had a job that was literally driving me crazy -- major anxiety disorder with panic attacks -- and no amount of money could have gotten me to stay. It sucks that the White House was evil enough to know that he would leave if they treated him like shiat enough.
