Did everyone see the data from Spain showing the neurological effects?  20% of all age groups, regardless of other symptoms, will suffer insomnia, anxiety, and/or psychosis.

At work I mask.  If I'm at a desk 6 feet from others I now double mask.  Our kids will not being going to school in person this fall.

Fark the aholes who won't take this seriously and Fark anyone who shared that bullsh*t video from the loony "doctor" who thinks vaccines are made from alien DNA

That damn video is so popular with the MAGA COVIDiot crowd that my wife's ex-boyfriend texted to ask whether she still has hydroxychloroquine for her Lupus.  A friend who works as a state contact tracer says both that nobody she contacts gives a sh*t and the state health department is getting a LOT of calls asking for the drug.

I don't know why but the headline just reminded me of that cheesy show on the sci-fi channel back in the day called First Wave.

They are finding more out about the virus everyday. As a result the view changes.

We're going to need a larger junkyard if we start throwing away 20% of the population because it's defective and otherwise we'd need a national commitment to healthcare to change that and that would cost valuable tax write offs for the rich.

The flu is seasonal because its reproduction number is not hugely greater than 1. It's close enough to 1 that the natural changes in human behavior (chiefly, inside vs outside) push it below 1 in the warm months and above 1 in the cold months.

Surely nobody was actually foolish enough to think that something as insanely infectious as covid - with a basic reproduction number somewhere between 3 and 6 - would exhibit that pattern, right?

bleh smart people where already on it back in like april when some where saying that it would go away with warm weather. but no for some reason majority was pushing a narrative that a disease that thrived in southern china (hot year long) would go away for the summer and that we would get a "second wave" in September.

I'm 2 for 3 of that. Not sure I want whatever psychosis is, but it isn't like you instantly become useless if you have the other 2.

A second wave assumes you got it under control, but not completely eliminated, stopped control measures, and then the few remaining cases did what exponential growth does, and it blew the fark back up - see 1918.

We didn't even wait for the curve to flatten, much less go back down, and didn't even come close to dropping to a trickle. We delayed it enough that it's probably one or two 2 week generations behind where it would have been had we done nothing, but in the long run, that does next to nothing with a widely available vaccine probably a year away.

I'm hoping that when Florida runs out of reefer trucks, and has to resort to backhoes digging mass graves, that will be the wake-up call the nation needs to finally actually do something about the situation... but between the death cultists, conspiracy nutjobs, and just plain assholes that can't even wear a mask, I don't like our odds.

Well it's a good thing that the 4.3 million Americans who now have COVID as a pre-existing condition arent threatened by the Trump administration working in court right now to remove protections for people with pre-existing conditions.

Everybody has changed the terminology when it comes to Covid-19. All new phrases and terms and changing definition of old terms.

If they used "resurgence" instead of second wave, I'm sure everybody would understand the meaning better.

A second wave is where everyone who is going to get the virus has gotten it, then the virus mutates enough to run through the population all over again.

Not necessarily. Back when hand sanitizer was impossible to find I'd spray my hands with a household cleaner with bleach after leaving the store but before getting home to really wash up. Now granted, most of the people doing so are loons, but there can be reasonable reasons for doing so given 'x' conditions.

/have gone back to hand sanitizer now that the supply system is full again

Australia and Japan are close to what would be a 2nd wave as will New Zealand if it starts spreading there again.

In both cases the virus was almost wiped out and now it is back doing more damage to more people more rapidly.  Sort of like what was seen in the 1918 pandemic.  Australia had it under control but got sloppy mostly thanks to politicians that know they know better than anyone else.

It really is amazing how viruses have become a political issue. A virus doesn't care if you're a Democrat, Republican, Independent, Libertarian, or whatever your political viewpoint is. You're a viable host, and that's all that matters. It will make you sick or kill you regardless, it doesn't have a brain, it doesn't care, it can't care. If it comes in contact with you in the right circumstances, it will infect you, despite how strongly you believe in your political causes.

Let's try to take care of each other. I don't want to infect you, and I hope you don't want to infect me. This isn't about politics, this is about being decent human beings.

Yeah Nah Mate. Here in NZ we will stomp the shiat out of it again if it gets out of quarantine and back into the community.  Our local economy is chugging along and life is mostly normal and we like it that way.
