Considering nobody will take an American at the moment, there's no real rush.

A lot of people are probably thinking with all the documentation they have to gather to get an  "Okay to fly" driver's license, (or whatever it is called), they might as well go ahead and get a passport, or renew the expired one. (My state won't take an expired passport as proof for the driver's license.) I would be in that waiting line of 1.2 million, except I gave myself a really, really unfortunate haircut, and I am waiting for some regrowth before the new picture is taken.

Hey, now Americans can blame their inability to go to any other countries on the Deep State instead of our abysmally poor Covid response.

So good news, everybody!

Thankfully I have a passport already...although maybe I should check the expiration date. Let's hope (and work for) a change in administration. When competent people are in charge this will become a non-issue.

Why didn't you already have one?

Thank God I have a passport and Real ID.  Oh, wait, I'm still hunkered down, and even if I wanted to go anywhere, nowhere outside the US would have me, not even Yemen.

Why can everything in life be referenced to a Journey song or Beetlejuice?

2020-07-25 11:38:03 AM
Nope.  Not thinking of getting a passport until 2026 because that's when my current one expires.

Sources say interested applicants should submit their passport requests to the Laying-in-State Department...

Mines been renewed already, biatches!
😏

Right now at  most i think i'd see about getting the needed documentation together to get a passport but not actually applying for it as of yet.   Hopefully by the time anyone seriously requires one and can actually use it the backlog is cleared to some degree.

I have (had? Ugh) out of country plans for September since December. My tour company sent me regular updates about the status of travel...
When they said "We are open!" what they really meant was "Everyone is welcome except for the dumbarse Americans!"

2020-07-25 11:41:55 AM
Renewed mine last summer.  You know, back when I could use it.

2020-07-25 11:42:45 AM
Just an FYI for those worried about your passport expiring soon. Normally if you let it expire, you have to start over to get a new one. However, because of Covid-19, the State Department has extended the renewal period for IRC five years after expiration.

Obviously you can't travel with an expired passport, but you will be able to renew it more easily.

There are a lot of nondrivers in places like NYC and San Francisco who use a passport or passport card as day-to-day ID, because those last for 10 years and a "non driver ID" issued by the state DMV typically only lasts for 5, same as a driver's license.  Also a passport renewal is available by mail at a nearby post office, whereas there might not be a convenient DMV location near you that's on public transport.

As an American, I wouldn't want to be in any club country that would have me as a member.

Ok, this caused a minor panic attack because I haven't seen my passport in about a year, and I had no idea where I'd put it.

Found it in the second place I looked though.

Renewing an expired passport was easier than getting a 'drivers license' substitute because of the need to stand in 100° heat for two hours, with all the paper work needed to start a Texas ID from start after the 92 year olds drivers license expired.

Of course that was before COVID19 but after voter suppression push just by denying everyone a drivers license by putting the urban offices 20 miles apart and the rural ones 100 miles apart.

Life or death reason really went out the window when children were put in cages, since the parents escaping from a failed state in a life or death situation was met with official sneers.

2020-07-25 12:18:43 PM
Yeah, I already knew about this.  Earlier this year I had a trip to Paris planned for next week... fortunately it got canceled and I got my money back because there is no way I could have gotten my passport renewed in time.

My wife's family are all in Canada. My wife procrastinates a lot. My wife sent in her renewal at the end of March. They cashed her check in April.

Still no passport.

2020-07-25 12:25:32 PM
Submitted my renewal in early March, finally got my new passport this week.  But, doesn't really matter, because corona.

2020-07-25 12:26:42 PM
I used to work near the passport office. There was a long line out of the door back then.

But with social distancing, the lines would go across the world's second largest building complex after the Pentagon, and out the entrance at the far end. The end of the line would be in Ottawa, having crossed the bridge. I might be able to join it by stepping outside of my building in the morning.

That reminds me. I should probably mail my tax forms in, seeing as they were due in April. I might lose some refunds if I wait until August or September.

2020-07-25 12:28:13 PM
i work with an Air Force MSgt who was due to PCS to Rammstein at the end of August and had to delay it for a month because his family is still waiting on their passports. He may have to leave them behind if push comes to shove.

My passport expired 2 years ago. I hope I can sill renew online.

Then I'll apply for my irish passport

I found that you need an ID with your photo, address and other vital information. Health care and government employee passes were not enough. I used my passport for years because I didn't have a driver's licence and it was the only thing they would accept. Harder to rent a video in those days than to travel to Mexico and back without a passport.

2020-07-25 12:29:25 PM
Why bother? The American passport is worthless right now. I doubt countries are going to be breaking down doors to let Americans back in.

Are we Great Again yet or what? I might actually be kind of a little bit tired of all this winning. Just saying .

Canadians are allowed into the European Community because our case load and death rates are almost exactly the same, 13.1 average deaths per day over seven days, compared to 13.2 for the EU.

But the UK won't exempt us despite being much worse hit by the pandemic than we are and than the EC is. Mind you, we aren't allowing them in, so it is just diplomatic tit for tat, if we did, they would be wide-open to us and possibly Trumpland.

Heh, I actually looked into this last night. My passport expired over 5 years ago, so I'd need to go through the entire process again. I was thinking maybe of getting a passport card, since I didn't want to deal with the RealID crap, but then I saw the backlog numbers. Oh well, I'm not flying anywhere anytime soon, anyway.

Well, mine was going to expire in July.  I figured it would be a lot easier to renew it that to apply for a new one, so I made sure I got the paper work in in June.  The check was cashed, but other than that, no response from the State Department.

Since you are on that topic, what is that song at the end of the movie, "Jump in the Line", about?  The lyrics--"Go up in the air come down in slow motion" etc. fit that scene because the scene was written around it, but make no sense in any other context.

I was not an adolescent, but Winona Ryder took up a lot of my brain's clock cycles too.

Just renewed my passport last year.  I have an enhanced license, and global entry as well as holding a foreign passport.  I think I'm good for a bit.

However, being from NY my Global Entry renewal is up in the air.

If Trump gets re-elected, it might matter bigly.  I'm spending a little time with my hobby.....which countries would I like to become an ex-pat in?  And, how do I transfer my assets to that country.  I probably need to consult an attorney  I'm not necessarily looking at the best or most popular expat option counties.  Those countries will rapidly fill with Yanks and that might not be a good thing.  I'm getting a list with maybe six choices on it.  Suggestions?

2020-07-25 12:59:16 PM
Mr. Ginz and I renewed our passports in 2018 and I have a Real ID, so we should be good to go when other countries open up to Yanks/ Trump stages a coup.
