Nobody is going to toss three no hitters in a row.

Comment on the NHL all time scorer. That's a longevity and skill record, given a long enough timeline it will eventually fall.

Since the WHA stopped existing 40 years ago, I think M. Lacroix's record is safe.

Unless they widen the nets or something that is highly unlikely. The NHL in the 80s was a wild aberration in terms of scoring - teams barely played any sort of defense on or off the puck and the goalies were horrific - and Gretzky knew how to take advantage of that.  In the absence of brain worms or crazy rule changes that record will stand forever.

Dimaggio'shiat streak will also probably stand forever given how sabermetrics/math has devalued base hits.

The hitting streak also stands forever because that same study of the game means you don't get to go up against tired pitchers in their 3rd trip through the order as often anymore.

Lots more fresh armed relief pitchers.

I spent a summer semester at college at Cumberland University in Tennessee so I know this by heart. That place holds the college football record forever. Georgia Tech team beat Cumberlands team, 222-0. October 7, 1916.

511 wins
Nolan Ryan's strikeout record.

Here's a controversial one: I don't think Emmitt Smith's rushing record will ever be broken. Football is now a passing game & RB's retire too soon & won't have enough years of service to break it.

I was going to suggest the football rushing record. It could conceivably be done, you'd need some ludicrously good early years and insane durability.

Might get a little easier with the move to 17 and 18 game seasons.

There are several in baseball:

Cy Young's all-time wins record (511)
Hack Wilson's single-season RBI record (191)
Rogers Hornsby's single-season batting average: .424
Johnny Vander Meer pitching back-to-back no-hitters

2020-07-23 4:47:44 PM
Ty Cobb's career batting average of .366. The last time someone had a season batting average higher than his career average was Ichiro's 2004 average of .372.

Ken Griffey, Jr's record as the second-best left-handed hitting, left-handed throwing outfielder ever born in Donora, Pennsylvania on November 21. He'll always have that locked. Best anyone can strive for is third best.

For association football: Just Fontaine's 13 goals in the 1958 World Cup. The closest anyone's gotten was Gerd Muller scoring 10 in 1970.

Fun Fact: That was the only World Cup he played in and he's still the 4th-highest scorer behind Miroslav Klose (16), Ronaldo (15) and Muller (14).

I looked at the hockey records, because I am a fan. Gordie Howe is in the top 7 in both leagues. That's pretty amazing.

I doubt anybody will beat DiMaggio's record,

And it is unlikely that anyone will beat the Lions playoff record of 1 victory since 1957. 63 years and 1 win. Take that Cleveland.

Cal Ripken, as noted

Donald Bradman's test average record, which is just short of 100 runs per match, and something like 5 standard deviations above the norm.

Ricky Henderson's stolen base record.
Only 3 MLB players have ever broken 900 stolen bases. Only 1 has broken 1,000.
Of the top 11 base stealers, 9 are HOFers.

I'll agree with several of the baseball records.

Henderson's SB record,
Cy Young's games won record.
Cal Ripken's games played.

OK, now for obscure, difficult, but still plausible.  Ernie Nevers' 40 points in an NFL game. 6 TDs and 4 PATs.  Plausible given how much offense is in the game, but we'd need to be seeing someone get into the endzone 7 times in a game to break it.

2020-07-23 5:22:45 PM
Ronnie O'Sullivan's century break record seems pretty safe for the time being, with John Higgins 25% behind him.

His maximum break record will probably last for a while as well.  I don't think either are as crazy as the Gretzky thing though.

Mario Lemieux 5 goals 5 ways.

Virtually impossible for the opportunity to even present itself, let alone actually score every way.

Just shut up about ripken already. A lot of the time it wasn't even a good thing he was out there.

I'll throw out Tiger Woods cut streak at 142 (which should actually be much longer but doesn't matter, no one will ever get close)

The next four closest guys (byron nelson at 113) are way, way behind and at 50 years ago or more. No current player will ever get within 50 of him. Hell, probably not 100... Current longest streak on tour is 17.

Staying with subby's hockey theme I think Tiger Williams' record of 3971 penalty minutes is safe. The game moved on and while there's still value in tough guys, they have to be skilled too.

/I often wonder how today's "pest" players like Marchand and Kadri would fare back in the mid 70s. I'm pretty sure that if someone tried licking Bobby Clarke back in the day they'd have had to be reassembled by air crash investigators.

I mean, the fact that often it wasn't the best choice for the team to get wins is what makes it more unbreakable.

Just like as we devalue hits and value power, it's less likely we'll have a 56-game hit streak (which was always a combination of skill and a lot of luck).

I suppose you could add a 5-on-3 advantage goal and/or a 3-on-5 shorthanded goal, or even just do the 5G5W with a shootout goal (assume you make the EN goal with like a minute left and the other team gets two to equalize, miraculously)...but yes, seems pretty safe lol
