Which is why I used to only use fuming nitric acid on my hands. When I had hands. A Pyrrhic victory perhaps, but I taught those bastard germs a lesson they won't forget!

I haven't been using hand sanitizer but I bought a bottle at the store and it smells like that liquid a$$ stuff and the lid was loose when I got it home. Maybe the alcohol evaporated or something?

I've heard the ethyl alcohol stuff smells terrible, and most of the cheap shiat that's available is just that.

I bought some the other day that wasn't alcohol-based, but used some polysyllabic chemical compound beginning with "chloro". Smells terrible. Guess I'll check the brand against the FDA's list, but I just bought a bottle of 99% isopropyl on Amazon and some glycerine. Gonna make my own instead of using this foul stuff.

Also the FDA thing doesn't say how much methanol. Probably safe to use on your hands, they really seemed to emphasize the issue was mostly if ingested.

Ethanol is much much better. Both will kill the virus just fine, but humans tolerate ethanol a whole lot better than isopropanol.

That's just the easiest and fastest way.  Skin absorption can still kill ya, blind ya, or at best result in a fun process called defatting.  Literally chemically dissolves the fats in skin, leaving you with white, dried out, and seriously cracked skin.  Not "I need some lotion" but fissures leading down to tissue that's not meant to see the light of day.  You wear gloves any time you handle that shiat in any kind of chemical or industrial process - it is not ok to be slathering on in any amount.

Those things you listed are for chronic exposure or massive exposure like you soak in it. Small exposure is mostly harmless,it's an irritant in small amounts. Small amount gets on you and most evaporates. Might rinse off a few skin oils and you can use lotion for that. You need about 10mL to go blind. You aren't going to absorb that much under normal accidental exposure. The risk in the contaminated sanitizers is people chugging it.

Exposure over time leads to small doses having uglier effects - and right now a lot of people are having to use the stuff constantly if they're forced to be out and in the wild with the plague rats.  Is it going to do this stuff in 5m?  Nope.  5 weeks of constant use of contaminated stuff?  You've got a problem.

Would I refuse to use sanitizer I knew to be contaminated once or twice, if the alternative was very likely serious exposure and infection?  No.  Would I refuse to continue using it constantly over a long period of time?  Oh gods yes I would.  Methanol's effects are cumulative.

If you do this make sure you using the 190 version, the other versions don't contain enough alcohol.  You're sanitizer per CDC needs to be 60% after mixing all ingredients.  Save money and use 90-99% rubbing alcohol.

This might spook you a bit, but it did in fact burn. You had a flame going and didn't even know it. You are fortunate that you didn't burn yourself.

Question: if you have a bottle, do you throw it out or what? I bought some a while ago (I don't use it, I had others so this was for when it ran out), so no receipt. Another jug was sent to me from online purchase, so no receipt either. Article and FDA don't say, and I can't imagine tossing in garbage would be eco friendly or safe.

Do NOT put it down the drain or the toilet.

Burning it in a burn barrel or bonfire is a really bad idea because you can't see where the flames are if it gets out of control, and worse, you won't be able to tell if it gets out of control. That invisible flame thing is a real problem.

Since we're talking about bottles and jugs worth here, it's hazardous waste. Your local waste company methods for dealing with hazardous waste may vary, so check their website. This article also talks about research labs but I don't know if that works during the pandemic.
