That has gotta suck.

2020-07-22 8:54:40 AM
Ed McMahon, New England for Trump's store opener and closer, tells Eyewitness News the landlord chose the sign's placement, and it's silly that customers are taking their frustrations out on the restaurant.

HIYOOO!  yes!  you are correct sir!

If I was the restaurant owner I would be back at 2:00 AM to paint the Trump sign with "stain blocker white".

Once it dried I would spray it with silicon to interfere with future adhesion.

Repeat as needed.

Anti-Trumpers, proving once again that they are hateful people who jump to conclusions whenever they see the name Trump.

Shoot first and ask questions later, it's the American way.

They ought to have separate, but equal, signs.

Sounds like y'all need to add an "I'M NOT WITH STUPID" to your part of the sign.

If conclusion jumping required physical effort, America would be the most tolerant and non-judgmental country on the planet.

I think it's more like "there goes the neighborhood" when anything that has the word Trump displayed on it shows up. I'm guessing a lot of people have a problem with his hateful agenda and are expressing themselves. Also, I realize you were joking.

I have no problem with people selling Trump merchandise. Hell I've thought about doing it. Separate some of the fools from their money.  =P

Pretty much. I would make very clear that if my business went under because of their action or inaction, they would... find the place in need of a spruce-up before renting to the next tenant.

Or not.  It does, at first glance, look like the restaurant got all MAGA-y, which is not a popular political position to have in New England.

After seeing over 144,000 Americans and counting die to this man's inability to act like an adult for the job he holds I wouldn't blame them for reacting that way. I'd bring a torch, pitch fork, tar, and feathers to contribute to at this point.

If you look at the sign, it is an easy mistake to make.  The store's name is "New England for Trump" which is then written in large print right under the restaurant's name, which makes it look like a slogan.  Had the store been "Bob's Trump Merchandise" I doubt this would have happened.  Still shouldn't threaten the restaurant owners but I could see how they worry about reduced business.

Oy gevalt - sign not sigh.

Damn, that landlord is an asshole for that sign.

I know the area, the restaurant is the only consistent tenant I can remember in that building (it's a pretty small building, maybe space for 3 or 4 storefronts total and crappy parking). They ought to raise hell about getting the sign fixed (at least demand two distinct signs, not one that looks like a run-on).  Of course, every restaurant is struggling now, so they might not have resources to move, but I would bet they can definitely do better in the long run elsewhere nearby.

2020-07-22 10:41:58 AM
I wouldn't go there anymore. I'm not going to support the landlord.  Everything about it screams "It's my property, fark your feelings."

Well, you are a horrible person then.

Not only are you a vandal at heart, but you have no respect for the first amendment, or anything resembling democracy.

Nobody appointed you to be in charge of approved political thought and support.

So you're a bad person who can't be trusted to respect other people's property rights, or agreements you have signed?

Good to know.

Looks to me like the restaurant didn't think to insist on a good signage clause in their rental agreement. Around here, anyone with any business sense will put that in before renting a space in a strip mall or any place where multiple signs could be posted together.

This story is the exact sort of thing a business would want to avoid from the beginning. A paragraph in the rental contract keeping the landlord from placing anything that could hold the lessee's business in a bad light, etc., etc.

There is a sign around here that had three pretty women with the word Elevate under them. The sign below it blended in and and said roofing.

So now I want to hire the hot lady roofers.

Cuomo's decision to put covid patients in nursing homes with old folks was a bigly smart thing to do. Yup this is all Trumps fault.

Don't go feeling bad for the restaurant just yet.

In the article they say they "want to remain neutral" which, as far as I'm concerned, is code for "We support Trump but are just smart enough now to realize that saying so will cost us more business than we care to lose."

If they weren't in favor of Trump they'd have said so. That's the side with the larger numbers, and it's the side that would keep Trumper assholes out of your restaurant. Seems like a win/win to me.

No, they're pro-Trump. They just don't want to advertise it because they like that liberal money, too.

In suburban Birmingham, AL all these businesses share the same building, which seems quite fitting.

Or they want both Conservatives and Liberals money and so they don't want to either embrace or distance themselves from Trump. Even if there are less Conservatives doesn't mean that their money isn't good.  This is the way any large corporation would respond.

Has this been a thing with other presidents?  Seems like this is upper-level grifting.

I don't recall Obama or Bush or Clinton or Reagan or Carter or Nixon or Johnson or Kennedy having stores other than at their presidential museums.

Agreed.   Thanks to his landlord likely giving absolutely no farks, if he even considered the potential issues  the sign placement ( not to mention allowing the other business open up in his property)  could cause.    Most likely the owner could careless and may not know either if he has a manager handling day to day things with his/her retail rental properties.

Most likely, yes.A smart business owner doesn't interject his politics into his advertising, particularly at a time when they can't afford to turn away any business.

This place is maybe 10 miles from the middle of Providence - not exactly in the sticks, but it's in the mixing zone between New England liberal suburb and redneck swamp yankee-ville.
