Mitch McConnell will get a completely unqualified 25-year-old ambulance chaser with no experience beyond spouting derp in the GOP echo chamber before he'll allow the opportunity to pass.  I wouldn't be surprised if he pushed Stephen Miller through, since there are no listed qualifications for the Supreme Court.

Believe me, if there's a vacancy, they will find the youngest, most fascist asshole they can get.  Because what's to stop them?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, tough guy.

People are being disappeared by uniformed, unidentified feds and stuffed into unmarked vans and no one is shooting.  Fratbro Kegstand McRaperson was confirmed in record time, even though we all knew he was unqualified.  You think anyone is going to get all shooty over a goddamn Supreme Court pick this time?

Funny.  That is what Republicans said they would do if the Dems even THOUGHT about doing the same.

"Merrick Garland was a different situation," Graham said in May. "You had the president of one party nominating, and you had the Senate in the hands of the other party. A situation where you've got them both would be different."

If that's your philosophy well, you're an idiot, but fine. You should have used *that* as your excuse to delay Garland then. Not some BS "the voters should decide" excuse.

They truly think they're elected dictators.

They are probably going to start the confirmation process for an RBG replacement while she still has a pulse, making the unfounded claim that she is already permanently incapacitated. Hold on to your butts, holding your nose hasn't been enough to cut it for the last 3.5 years, IMHO.

If Biden won the presidency, the Democrats picked up enough seats to take the majority in the Senate, and RBG died on Christmas Day, I guarantee you Trump and McConnell would ram through a nominee before January 3rd, when Chuck Schumer would take over the Senate.

Yep. In fact there is every chance that they specifically would not do it before the election. They could keep it as a threat hanging over the heads of Republican voters.

And then have two months to put something on the bench after.

Honestly the Court should be work entirely differently. I think it should be a panel of at least 30 justices, with fixed 10 year terms. Then individual cases should be decided by a randomly selected subset of the justices.

The current process is broken. The political stakes of every nomination are way too high, to the point that it's having a ripple effect on Congress, the presidency, etc (for example, the high stakes surrounding SCOTUS are a huge part of why the evangelicals are willing to tolerate a total scumbag like Trump...the rest of what he does is just collateral damage to them). SCOTUS justices should be anonymous in the eyes of public and the system should be reformed to reduce the political stakes. It would also reduce the workload for them to split it up more.

Beyond all that, just on principle, I am completely opposed to lifetime terms on anything in our government. I think this was always a bad idea, but it's even worse now than it used to be because lifespans are longer and we've eroded the norms that say that these appointments are only to be given as the capstone near the end of illustrious career. No generation has the moral right to reach 4 decades into the future and impose its values on people who have not even been born yet. For that reason alone I would support radical reform of the SCOTUS.

It would really be nice if they just said "lol, sucks to be you. we'll do what we want." and gave the middle finger to everyone asking them questions.

I think they would feel more satisfied instead of tiptoeing around how they really feel. And we wouldn't have to roll our eyes at their bullshiat.

Even if the Democrats take back a majority of the Senate in a bigger landslide than anyone can imagine, they aren't going to get a whiff at 67 seats. They would have to take all but one of the seats up for grabs to have a 2/3 majority (that is win all but one of Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia x 2, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, West Virginia, and Wyoming).
