While I'd LOVE to see the convention here at MKE, I can see a completely scaled back version of it being the better approach.

With partisan politics this toxic, there really is no reason for the old, broken ceremony and self love fest of the "Convention". Technology has far outstripped the old way.
The process has moved on, the partisans should too but that is a central failure of partisanship.

I'm glad to see Biden and co. heeding Napoleon's advice.  The best person who can defeat Trump right now is Trump.  Biden barely needs to get up off the couch, he just has to watch the GOP consume itself in the fires of Trump's all-encompassing ineptitude, racism, and greed.  I do want to see debates happen though, if only to see Trump flounder question after question as he tries to repeatedly talk over Biden with well-worn chants of "WRONG!" and "Fake news!" and such.

Note, however, that none of this means you don't have to vote.  Whether Biden has this in the bag or not, assume he doesn't.  Always assume that.  In fact, assume Trump is going to win unless you get off your ass and get to the polls on Nov. 3rd.  Because he will.

Actually delivering the coup de gras by voting in mass quantities is absolutely the only way to overcome the voter suppression, voter disenfranchisement, gerrymandering and machine/reporting fraud that one party has in place. They are already counting their chickens and obviously feel invulnerable. There are states that are obviously possibly not able to hold legitimate elections and their electoral votes will be counted.

We had that opportunity when Obama took office. He didn't do anything about it, either.

It would be poetic justice for 5% of the Republican convention delegates to perish as a sacrifice to Trump.

Betsy DeVos better be at the Republican convention or she can STFU about reopening schools.

I have watched about 30 minutes total of all the conventions that have been held in my 700 hundred odd years on this planet attempting to rule you all.  What I'm saying is I'm okay with this strategy and you should kneel when I approach.

Sounds a bit like the space aliens in Millennial Hospitality. They don't like to be touched and are often 700 earth years old.

I don't know why Dems are even having a national convention. Biden could stream a live speech and a virtual balloon drop. Have a cool musical guest do a live stream performance or whatever.

Return of the Living Dead.

But I fear invoking that movie might lead the GOP to think about nuking an American city

TX GOP had to put their virtual convention on pause because of technical difficulties.  But they still ought to admit, even privately, that Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner saved them from their damn fool selves.

The conventions have never been about the process of picking a nominee - even before era of primary elections, the party leadership had already made their decision long before the convention.  Conventions are about two things.  First is allowing local party members to meet other local party members from different parts of the country.  Most party stalwarts do not have 170,000-member chain-letter fests 24/7.  If you want to put a face to what is happening in Iowa, you only really get a chance to do that at a convention where the party is footing your travel bill. Being able to personalize the various parts of a large organization is vital to maintaining some level of cohesion.  If you strenuously and conspiculously never interact with other low-level members, the organization atomizes, as you only ever see the upper echelons as existing.  Facetime is vital.

Second - and this is the important one - most people are not political junkies.  They do not spend their time obsessively watching politics.  They have lives, and families, and hobbies, and touch boobies/wieners.  The vast majority of Americans tune into politics a week or two before their state primary (maybe Iowa/NH if they are feeling particularly bored).  They then tune out until the conventions.  Conventions are the first time most Americans actually care about Presidential elections.  They may not be watching the things, but they start to actually scan articles and listen to news about the conventions.

That being said, holding them this year is farkwit stupid.  But getting rid of them entirely would make American politics more apathetic as it all becomes inside baseball wonk-masturbation.

Because we abandoned him two years in and let the selfservatives begin and steamroll their takeover of Congress.

LOL, and it was the voters to blame for Obama letting Goldman Sachs hand-pick his cabinet!

I just wanna see one instance of Trump trying to push some bullshiat past Biden and Biden respond with, "Is this man full of malarkey or what?"

/Then watch the ratings meters spike off the screen
//And Frank Lutz look and realize, "Yeah, Trump's farked."

May not have done anything but certainly caused something. I am not looking forward to the reaction by GOP to this November. Either way, the USA  is the big loser in the short run.

You sound young, enjoy. Back in the day, politics for the average citizen was not the year long shiatfest it is today. Lives, families and hobbies have all suffered because of it.
I remember talking with my dad about how TV coverage was farking up politics and how it would change the country when the convention coverage replaced programing for the week of conventions. And then money green replaced the black and white world, well disguised.
Is your seatbelt fastened for the next 40 years?
