Look, real talk. Ascribe to whatever food ethics you want, but be flexible when nascent children are on the line. If you're having trouble getting enough X on a Y diet, just shut up and do it for the kid. We're built to be omnivores. Not getting enough protein? Eat a fish? Not getting enough veggies? Eat some broccoli. Just... Do what's right for the fetus, and then go back to whatever you want. Supporting a human life is a greater reasonability than whatever you think you need to do by whatever mythology you pretend is real.

Of course she's not going to 'force' the kid to be vegan.

Because that would imply that there is some other alternative to eating vegan.

There is a video on YouTube I'll try to find the link for, of a guy feeding a group of his neighbors cats because she only feeds them vegan cat food, and it looks and sounds like they are dying a slow death due to malnutrition. He started feeding them real food off his porch.

Would "listening to your OB/GYN and taking their advice" fall under your definition of "careful about your macros and micros"?

I am not one to bash vegans but as a former pregnant person/nursing mother I'm comfortable pointing out OB/GYNs are pretty useless if you don't, you know, LISTEN to them.  Ignore your friends but pay attention to the person reading your blood and urine tests.

The biological process of making a new person may require certain, temporary, sacrifices.

Mine just happened to be cheeseburgers and milkshakes.

Every Fark vegan thread:

"I hate how pushy vegans are. [Urinals.jpg] Can't they just leave us alone? Also, they need to stop being vegan because it's bad for them and it's annoying that I have to see their food in shops and I hate it when people don't eat meat at social gatherings because it's selfish of them to eat the things they want and not the things I want them to eat, and furthermore --"

[35 variations on same post whining about how vegans exist]

"Hey guys I don't eat meat and I'm not actually like that, in fact the only people I've ever seen berating a stranger for their food choices are you guys, right now, in this thread."

"Fark off vegan. Go die of anaemia somewhere else. God vegans are so annoying and pushy. Why do they always think they know better than everyone else? They just don't shut up about veganism, ever, never ever, it's always tofu this and beans that, god don't they ever get tired of putting their nose in other people's business, god I can't stand them, how much they just go on and on and on and on and on about other people who don't actually affect them in any meaningful way, they just can't seem to live and let live, I once saw one ordering a soy coffee and my dick literally fell off with anger, why couldn't she just leave me alone the biatch, will the oppression never cease"

Every living thing is made of protein.
There are plenty of licensed nutritionists that offer healthy prenatal vegan diets.

There are also plenty of unhealthy non-vegan diets.
I am not sure whether people are trying to help or diet shaming.

If you are pregnant and getting proper pre-natal care, they make you a pin cushion to get all the blood tests.

If you flunk one, you're probably gonna get referred somewhere because the OBGYN is going to protect their butt from you suing them later because they are missing an eyelash because you didn't have enough B12.

I would think a qualified dietitian would be rather helpful for a vegan (or anyone else on a special diet) who is pregnant.  They'd probably be helpful for anyone on a special diet period.

Back in the day, my neighbor's infant had serious birth defects from lack of folic acid in her diet.  It happens often when women have a terrible diet the month before/first 12 weeks of pregnancy.  A lot of pregnancies are unplanned as well, so the standard carnivore diet can really screw things up.

The nutritionist idea seems wise, as not all vegans are created equal.  There's the "I'm vegan and 90% of my diet consists of oreo cookies" vegan, as well as the "I'm vegan, plan all my meals in advance and pay attention to the varied protein types" type of vegan.

Basically, there are dumbass vegans, dumbass vegestarians, dumbass ominvores, and dumbass carnivores.  As an OBGYN your job is advise, as a standard citizen off the street, maybe keep your well meaning advice to yourself.

FTFY.  There is plenty of bioavailable B9 in eggs, dairy, fish, and organ meat as well as in leafy greens (and other veggies).  The problem isn't the meat, it is processed junk food most of which is corn or soy based which is totally nutritionally deficient.

You know who eats a lot of organ meat? Women in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
Morning sickness? Nonsense! Bring me calf's liver with a side of tripe!

You are right about a varied, healthy diet, of course - but, to the topic? eggs, dairy, fish and organ meat are all non-vegan.

Fortunately, folic acid and iron supplements are familiar to the average OB/GYN

I think the issue is with consent. Non-human animals can't agree to be eaten. As long as the breast milk was given with consent its fine.

This brings up an argument that I get into with a lot of vegans.
As long as something was not tested on animals they seem fine that the humans that were tested on "consented" even if they are either desperate people or prisoners in China.
Animal testing can't be done with consent, but it can be done without cruelty and human testing can't legally be done without consent but can be done with cruelty.

The problem w/ vegans breastfeeding is that they *quit* too early.
If the only 'dairy' your kid gets is from you, then you have to breastfeed until the kid is 3+.
Otherwise the kid is at risk for bone deformation, rickets, etc.
