Congratulations. I was expecting a link to a gofundme, and you didn't do that.

So cautious optimism that this was a genuine attempt at being decent human beings. This year hasn't given me a lot of faith in that.

"Don't try to put them in a box." said the mother who then proceeded to put her kid in a box.

Good story, good parents, good for the kid, and sometimes getting put in a box is not a bad thing.

There's a difference between sex and gender. On one hand, I'd prefer if people used the correct terminology. On the other hand, their guests might get the wrong idea if they were invited to a sex reveal party.

Actually I don't think it will be.  Those folks are too busy in the politic thread.

Maybe. Sometimes I think Drew likes to greenlight these threads just to encourage the transphobes.

See, this right here is what I think is the major problem most folks have with transgenderism. They think it's a mental illness, something that drugs or therapy can "fix", They think trans people are "crazy" and need to be "treated".

But that's just not backed up by any evidence at all.

There is nothing wrong with trans people's brains: the problem is with their bodies. They don't think they are a different gender, they are. They're forced to cope with life in a body that doesn't match what their brain tells them they're supposed to be. No amount of drugs or psychotherapy or counseling will ever "convince" them that they are a different gender any more than drugs or therapy would convince you that you're the opposite gender - because you're not. Even if we took your brain out and stuck in a body belonging to the opposite gender, your brain wouldn't change. Your thoughts wouldn't change. You wouldn't suddenly start wanting to wear clothes more often worn by the other gender or take up hobbies common to the other gender - you'd just still be who you are, but you'd have to deal with dozens of people everywhere you go telling you that you're not, and you're not allowed to do this or that, and you have to dress like your naughty bits dictate and not how you want.

Transgenderism is not mental illness. Although people constantly telling you that you're someone you're not can cause mental illness (hence the high suicide rate), the condition itself is not a mental illness. It's a physical problem, and folks should be more mindful of that.

Here's the psych articles on it https://www.psychiatry.org/patients-families/gender-dysphoria/what-is-gender-dysphoria

I mean it is a malfunction of either the brain or the body or both in an ideal world you would take a pill and mutate physically from Sex A to Sex B if your brain said you want to be Sex B.  Just like if you had (insert problem here) impacting you day to day, if you could you would take a pill to change.  Like I was saying though, mental illness is all around us, all kinds of abnormal manifestations of malfunctions.

I think you should read the link yourself.. It's not a mental illness. It's a condition.

That's a very good parent. As a parent, you need to support your kid no matter what they do in life as long as they're not really doing bad stuff. If they identify as Godzilla or whatever, be there for them because parental love is one of the most important things in life. As long as everyone's happy and nobody's getting harmed, support and love your kids.

I dunno. Can I file it under "I don't care?".

I could really care less if someone is gay, straight, trans, bi, asexual, gender fluid, whatever.  All the flags just seem like attention whoring and feeds rainbow capitalism.  Oh look, a new bisexual gender fluid pride flag.  Available in 3 sizes starting at $14.99.  Order today!

Unless someone identifies as a rock at work and sits around not doing anything, it doesn't affect me one bit.  Who you love is no concern of mine, and frankly I don't want to know about other people's sex lives.

Back when I was in college, one of the RAs in my dorm was gay.  I heard about it within 5 minutes of arriving.  He would make Freddy Mercury have said "you're pretty gay". Then out of the blue he had a coming out party about halfway through the school year. Really?  It would be like Ru Paul throwing a coming out party.

We certainly don't need to be abusing people because they are different from us.  But that's just being decent and polite people.

I outed my own son when he was 15.  I know you're not supposed to do that, but he was struggling.  Its easier to deal with when you have people in your corner.  He needed to know that we loved and supported him as he was, not as everyone expected him to be.  He's a happy, healthy gay man of 23 now.  No regrets!

I'd like to add to the language about the parents saying they got the gender wrong....my kid came out to me as transgender when he was 15.  I'm cool with the idea but I still felt like a heel for having missed clues or not knowing, etc.  It was a transgender friend of mine that assured me that the narrative of parents claiming that they've always known about their kids is actually few and far between.  Sometimes, you're simply blindsided by your kids.

In retrospect, it was pretty clear....especially the parts about clothes shopping.  That was ALWAYS a farking tooth-pulling nightmare when we would shop for girls/womens clothing.

Now I can't keep the bastard from raiding my closet.  I'd try to stop him but I'm not sure I can take him in a fair fight.  I'll try throwing sand in his eyes first.
