Us kids: "Hey do you like seafood?"

Other kids, grinning: "Nope!"

Us kids, opening our food filled mouths: "See food anyway!"

Fun fact: centuries ago, "man" was gender neutral, basically just meant "person". That's why the word "woman" (previously "wifman") embeds it: originally it just meant "female person".

If only they had a neutral term to call these sailors.  Hmmmmm.  What could it be?  Darn, it seems so simple. Hard to come up with a neutral term for these mariners.  Hmmm...Tar?  No, Sea dog.  Maybe.... Wow, so hard to come up with a neutral term for these female seafarers.  Private?  No, too army.  Maybe airman?

Now if they would just stop calling their canoe fleet personnel "J-Strokers"...

No, in true Canadian fashion they are going to go out to the public at large and make sure everyone and their dog weighs in before they choose something stupid and apologize to everyone.

Sea lions then.

Au au au.

whidbey: Doesn't really say what terms they are going to use.

Says they're going to use sailor *wink* at the end.

Weird, I didn't intend that wink, it just kind of happened.

Here I'll try again, sailor *wink*.

Another way they could even it out without replacing Seaman is just rename the whole armed forces as being sections.

So you have the Ground Section, the Air Section and the Sea Section. And Submarines can become Fallopian Tubes.

The Sea Section, comprised of little men in boats and seamen in Fallopian Tubes.

That should balance the gender scales, at least as much as sailor *wink*.

Pretty sure they been dropping seamen at every port of call for a long time.

2020-07-16 10:57:55 PM
Can we just call them sailors? I mean that's the job description, sail around the world and trade money for herpes

2020-07-16 11:18:56 PM
I assume they're going with "sailor"?  Since it's the actual proper name for the profession and doesn't falsely imply that the profession is some sort of nationality or identity like the military propaganda term does?

*checks TFA*

... cool.  They're doing the common-sense thing for once, consider me pleasantly surprised.

// The military intentionally renaming their positions stupid shiat to dehumanize their employees and socially isolate them from their civilian counterparts isn't the most dumbass, cynical, and evil thing that military tradition is super fond of for some farking reason, but it's definitely one of the more annoying.

The Air Force changed Airman to Aviator, so probably.

Yep, that is really the only thing that makes sense. The question being voted on is apparently whether to replace "Leading", "Able", and "Ordinary" with "First Class", "Second Class", and "Third Class" which would match the French versions of the ranks

Members of the navy as well as the public at large will be able to vote online on two alternatives starting Friday, with both variants substituting "sailor" in place of "seaman" in different ways

Which made no sense because 'Aviator' refers to a male with the female version being 'Aviatrix'. It also means that an Air Force RMS clerk, dental hygenist, cook, etc. can now be called 'Aviator'. Kind of takes the meaning out of the word.

At least with the navy most trades can actually be 'sailors'.
