For users that may not have DVD drives on their PC towers these days, Kok said Aerosoft plans to offer a "cheapo" USB DVD drive through their online shop. "I got one, under $20 and it works brilliantly,"

Brilliant! Why isn't it on bluray?

What they don't tell you until after the purchase is there will be a Day 1 update to the program that will require a 90gb download.

I had Sim City 2000 on 20 floppies. Somebody lost one.

I have a physical copy of XPlane from a few years ago that is 75gb fully installed. I think it came on 8 DVDs. The worst thing, though, is my copy of the complete National Geographic magazine collection. It came out around 2010, and takes over 2.5 hours to install from many, many DVDs. And after that 2.5 hour install, you realize that it uses Adobe AIR for everything....

I still have all of our old Sierra games on floppies.  I backed up the images long, long ago, and I've occasionally played a few in DOSBox, but for some reason I couldn't find the courage to discard the disks.

People still are excited about this when Flightgear kicked it's ass two decades ago to the point Microsoft quit the flight sim sector the first time?

900 of them, specifically. Or on 62,500 separate 3.5" floppy disks... Perspective is cool.

The drives aren't $20, the discs aren't cheap to make and the benefit, being able to play BD video discs, is not all that appealing and frankly really messy for most people using PCs.

I have a great computer setup for this, including a HOTAS, but I'm not sure if I really want to buy it...

It looks amazing, and I'd love to play around with it for an hour or two, but it's really a simulator and not a game. I'm not studying for a pilot's license... There's no guns on those planes... Just flying around looking at the pretty scenery only gets you so far. So, I want to play with it a little, but I don't think it's really for me.

No barn-storming / bridge-storming / canyon-running for you then!

I've preferred downloading my games for years. Don't even have a disk drive installed in any of my 4 computers. Just have a portable USB one for contingencies. Haven't been using optical drives for many years now.

I think I need a friend to get it. I'd like to fly around - let's say - Kuala Lumpur, and check out the pretty scenery. But I'll lose interest in that after an hour or two, and getting in to the nitty-gritty of flying isn't my thing. Maybe if someone put out a combat mod or something...

After seeing the footage I'm really torn. It is very, very pretty looking. I'm just not in to sims.

I don't like Steam's terms of service, nor the proliferation of even more restrictive storefronts on PC nor the widespread use of malware-grade DRM.

Needless to say I don't really bother with PC gaming much any more.

It is a complex sim, at least the expansion modules like the A10 and FA18. But the base game is free and the "light" aircraft are easy to get up and going without needing a real world manual and checklist.

Its releasing on MS game pass.  The first month is $1, so it might be worth signing up for that if you can remember to cancel.

It apparently wont have VR support on day one. I'm waiting for that myself.

It would be better if they just dropped either format, an actual 128GB USB stick wouldn't be expensive, and more practical.

A USB 3 stick would be faster than optical drives too. That's the reason I started using USB sticks to install Windows years ago in the first place. It was faster.

I love the convenience of digital, but the reality is you no longer "own" the game.
The game is yours to play until the developer or steam or anyone pulls the plug, and then there's no updates or downloads.
After that you're depending on someone having a hacked copy out there, years after the games prime.

I found out about Meigs field when I flew to Meigs field...

/Downloaded fsx but the default was changed to Friday harbor.
/"no problem, I'll just fly there!"
/*several hours of Cessna time later*. "This must be a bug...."
/one google search later *anger ensues*

There are free afcads that will restore meigs, you can also use pay add-ons like aerosoft Chicago. Fsx/prepar3d are very mod friendly.

I would suggest that the overlap of people who have a DVD drive, people who have a computer capable of playing the game and people who can't download (or people who would rather use 10x DVDs) is extraordinarily small.

99.9% of these are going to collectors. 0.1% are going to shops that are going to build a cockpit and run it.

It has more to do with the decades of anhedonia, but whatever floats your boat.

As far as game distribution goes, if it's not DRM-free from Gog or available as a direct download from a Humble Bundle, I really don't want to deal with it. I can watch a Youtube Let's Play and call it a day.

/You couldn't select the heliport for a 737 takeoff. But you could choose a helicopter, select the helipad and then change your plane to a 737.

You could slew just about anywhere in most flight simulators (since FS2 I think).
I forget which one first introduced a carrier, but I was always trying to land planes on it (to little success...).

I've done Microsoft Office from floppies. I figure that at least one of them must have been for the slideshow it gave you as you were feeding in the other disks.

We actually had a new Radio Shack open in Claremore last year.  No idea if it's still around now, but from the folks I know that went there, they had the smarthome stuff and the diodes and resistors and stuff.

But at this point finding a Radio Shack is like being reminded that Montgomery Ward and The Bon Ton are still around but only do online sales now.

2, maybe closer to 3 decades since Montgomery Wards went to exclusively online sales through wards.com.  Bon Ton made a similar move last year, I mostly only know of The Bon Ton because they were a dead mall staple like Victoria Secret, Gymboree, GNC and Bath and Body Works that somehow stay open long after nobody's shopping there.  JC Penny is another, but you can tell when even JC Penny's getting ready to throw in the towel if the location becomes a JC Penny Outlet, and is really only there because they own the building and can't get out from under it when they make it a "JC's 5-Star Outlet".
