They've certainly perfected the removing statues game now.

has been removed by the local authority.

Local WHITE authority I reckon.
Can't have any uppity black statues around right?

Hell hath no fury like a local government if you ain't got a permit for that

Don't worry, statues aren't important.

2020-07-16 11:08:28 AM
I actually like that they put it in a museum instead of just shiat-canning it

2020-07-16 11:08:37 AM
There's every chance that when the local authority open poll so the local residents decide what goes up on the plinth the same statue is returned.

Bonus points all round if it gets a bronze version cast & installed.

"But the sculpture has caused a divide in the art world, with some suggesting that the intervention of a White, London-based artist is unhelpful to the wider Black Lives Matter movement."

Oh well then, I guess we should dismantle the Statue of Liberty and send it back to France?

The artist confirmed that he did not receive permission from authorities to erect the statue.

Random people can't just randomly install statues in a city park.

But we're operating under new rules now.   Once Robespierre arrives, he's there until the guillotine takes him too.

This was probably the motivation for putting it up in the first place.  I'm sure the artist didn't expect the city to just go "Oh that's nice, just move it 3 inches to the left and we'll fill out the forms for you".

It's a beautiful, powerful statue, and now everyone's seen it in place.  It'll most likely be top of the list when they decide what to install.

Okay, okay.  We'll replace it with a lawn jockey.  Is that what you want?

Is anyone surprised? Even if local authorities support the new statue they don't want to establish precedent that you can just tear down and replace statues at will. Hold a vote and let the community decide, if they decide on replacing the BLM statue then put it back up if.

2020-07-16 11:39:28 AM
I can't wait for the city council to finally hold meetings on the statue sometime in 2024, review the responses in 2028, hold a meeting on replacement choices in 3217, then finalize a contract with a local artist sometime after the heat death of the universe.

I regularly drive by two separate houses, on opposite sides of town from each other, with lawn jockeys at their front doors- and they ain't the white version.

Amazes me every time I see them they haven't been launched through the front window.

You do realize that if they take down Lady Liberty, they are likely to find the bodies of soldiers that the French sent, in a failed Trojan Horse plot, right?

Statues idolize.  I'm probably gonna get a lot crap for this, but here we go.  Removing statues of evil people and replacing them with heroes, and people who made a change for the better is what we should be doing.

This again is tricky, because people are a product of their time.  That time people who were considered heroes are now racist and evil, because things change.  We get better, smarter, and more accepting.

Have to stop idolizing people and just put them in the history books and realize they were this way because of the society they were raised in.

Learn from those mistakes, and do better.  Sadly however we keep making the same mistakes.

If statues are idolatry, then does it matter whether the statue is of a "good" person or an "evil" one?

We would be trying to figure out how to monetize it. and collect a display fee.  If the artist planned on selling it, I would view the plinth as an exhibition base and talk to local art studios to find out what kind of fees they charge... and if the artist doesn't want to pay the fee and insurance, then impound it and let them pay the removal and storage costs to get it back.

Its just business and proper use of public space.

Statues are not men or women.  Even if they identify as such.  On the other hand...

Agreed, and somebody tomorrow should be able to tear it down and replace it with whatever they want. Then the day after that...

Odd how your opinions on what is good and not good seem to magically shift based solely upon who does them and what they support, almost as if there are no guiding principles at all but I know that just can't be true.

Exactly. I'm for tearing down all statues and for the love of God, stop naming public streets and buildings after people while we're at it.

Problem solved. Then we can focus on the important issues of our time. Like if the dress is blue or gold...
