I liked that, until quite recently, classic Japanese FX followed the same structure and aesthetic as other forms of Japanese Art, like Noh and Kubuki theater and classic brush painting. They never really TRIED for reality, so much as a colorful stylized representation of what would be "real". Noh is wildly unrealistic to wetern eyes...but the emotional truth behind it is very real.  One of the leading FX supervisors, Koichi Kawakita said" In our films, its not important that something look real, only that it be photographed realistically" That is...no wild "impossible" angles and shots...only the feeling that what is happening really took place, even if just on a sound-stage.

Plus...they are very fun. :)  They gave more enjoyment and imagination in a 7 million dollar film than the 200 million dollars wasted on the last American Godzilla film , that bombed so badly an the box office.

Between the evil fuzzy bunnies and the awesome Godzilla scene, One Crazy Summer is a great movie.

I kinda-sorta disagree.

If you watch the original Ultraman series, for example, while there are examples of what you speak of, like Dada (who is in TFA), there are plenty of kaiju that are attempts at being realistic.  At least, realistic as far as the medium allows.

Though you're not wrong about the emotional aspect.  I was a fan of Ultraman when I was a kid, watching the dubbed versions on TV.  When I got the DVD set of the original series a few years back, it had the option of watching the dubbed version or the subtitled version.  The subtitled version was darker, more deep.

It actually reminded me of how Disney used to make films for kids that had dark and complex themes, like in 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, but now pander to the princess fantasies of girls.

I didn't care for Pacific Rim.  It looked and felt unreal, because largely it was.  It was all CGI.

You can get away with that by setting your film on some moon in another star system like in Avatar, because you expect things to look different.  But when you've got live actors walking around a mostly green-screened set and you back-fill it with CGI, well, it *LOOKS* fake.

I'm distressed that TFA doesn't mention Gamera at all.  It's my contention that the Heisei series of Gamera films:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamera_2:_Attack_of_Legion
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamera_3:_Revenge_of_Iris

Are what I like to call "Kaiju done right".

I haven't seen Gamera the Brave yet, though.

Enjoy whatever you like. But on any critical barometer final wars is trash. Twice the budget of any Japanese Godzilla film made before it, and even $5,000,000 than shin Godzilla which was made 15 years after. And it resulted in the biggest bomb in Japanese Godzilla film history, and one which Japanese audiences still pretend never happened. It's kind of weird, small, but enthusiastic fan base in America, mostly ADD fans who responded to its matrix meets Ultraman meets bad direction vibe. It was so bad in fact that even the toys went unsold.

It is trash.

I'm a kaiju fan.  Have been since my days of my parents taking me to see films like Godzilla vs. Megalon and watching Ultraman and Johnny Sokko on those independent UHF stations Weird Al made fun of in his movie.

I'm especially a fan of Godzilla.  This is my desk at work:

As you can see, I've got a 1954 Godzilla figure, a Godzilla 2000 figure, and a 2014 Godzilla.  You can't see the plush Godzilla up on my filing cabinet, flanked by plush Dogbert and plush Catbert.

Final Wars is trash.  It's evidence that you can take something beloved by many and grind it into the ground.  It's even below the 1998 American Godzilla*, a film it's supposed to be ragging on.  And it's worse than Shin Godzilla, which is more a paean to Japanese bureaucracy than it is a monster film.

It's at the bottom of the barrel of Godzilla films.  I got it as a free rental** and I was so pissed that I considered trying to get my money back, just on principle.

*Which I still say would have been better received if it hadn't used the Godzilla name.  It's a good giant monster film, whose only real sin is changing the look of Gojira too much.

**Local movie rental place had a "rent X movies, get your next rental free" deal.  This was back when you had to rent physical media instead of streaming it.

Actually, it's Garamon from Ultra Q:

https://ultra.fandom.com/wiki/Garamon

Easy to make that mistake though because Pigmon is essentially the Garamon suit, but used at human scale.
