There are two schools of thought about falling fertility in the West.

One school attributes it to the fact that women are more educated, more empowered, and have the ability to control their own reproductive choices.

Another school attributes it to the fact that the economy has been restructured so that homeownership occurs later in life if ever, maintaining a household requires two incomes but childcare is outrageously expensive, and young people enter the workforce with tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt.

It doesn't take much imagination to see how not only might both be true, but that one might reinforce the other.

This is purely anecdotal, of course, but several of my friend-couples who really, really want kids are holding off because they just can't bring themselves to send a child into a world that rich psychopaths and cruel idiots are trying to destroy.

Demographers, developmental economists, and all the rest have been saying this for decades. The Demographic Transition wasn't just for white people. The second derivative of population went negative almost twenty years ago. What we're seeing now was predictable by anyone who can do simple math

Sounds like a terrible reason to hold off having kids.  Throughout human history, there have always been rich psychopaths and cruel idiots (usually more cruel and psychotic than now).  There will always be rich psychopaths and cruel idiots.  If they're holding off on kids because of BabyTrump McDiaperpants, they do realize he will not be in power forever, right?  They could, you know, have the baby, Trump leaves office between 2021-2025 (assuming he's not reelected, 2021), and life goes on?

Ceteris paribus, lower fertility rates are usually a good sign, because it means people are less concerned their kids will die young.

That would require us to listen to those nerds though. This is AMERICA were we keep doing whatever we want until it becomes a problem and then we complain that nobody warned us that this behavior has long term negative effects.

Yes, and the problem is too many people, so why would any country want more?

It's #1 almost exclusively, and it's just not the US.  You can watch it happen literally country by country- as soon as women have access to education, birth control and enough health care to make sure most kids live, birth rates plummet.

It's almost like raising kids is a ton of work and if you don't have to have 10 kids to make sure 2 make it to adulthood you don't

That became a real issue for my wife and I not long ago. I wanted to have kids and try fixing everything. She thought the world unfixable and too big to change. Losing the love of my life is my only regret of late, but the difference is truly irreconcilable, and I don't have it in me as a person to shy away from important fights. This one's too damned important to us all. Seriously.

Ultimately, I couldn't be a public artist/public warrior in any way and keep her as my wife. She's too private for that. I used to be that way as well when I worked for the government. It suited us well enough. Then I had to retire early last year and got antsy.

I still love her too much not to let her go now if that's her desire. But this is Fark, so I'm probably not the only soon-to-be divorced or divorced schmuck in the thread. Meh. I'll just deal.

But y'all may get to hear about it now and again here. And y'all know how to scroll past nonsense, so thanks whether you care or not, farkers.

A Howard Zinn book would actually demonstrate that our current political problems are nothing new, there was no golden age from which we have fallen, and rich racist asswipes have always been farking everyone else's shiat up since time immemorial.

If you'd read Zinn, you'd know that he is probably the historian who is *least* likely to lead to false nostalgia for a better past.

Not seen in this thread yet: unprecedented climate change. God only knows what pandemics, famine, shattered economies, droughts, wars, etc. is awaiting each newborn as we post here. I used to think we as a country could adapt as each decade becomes more severe but now I'm not so sure. Soon those debts will be paid one way or the other.

Not sure if I could bring a kid into the world to ultimately have to deal with that.

The fun part is if we'd peaked the population fifty years back instead of doubling it to nearly 8 billion, we probably wouldn't have this issue with climate change to look forward to. There's a comfortable number of people this planet could support, and we already went past that number.

We've actually had a pretty sweet ride so far. Things are definitely going to worsen.
