Ah, Buckfast: "The beverage has entered the popular lexicon with nicknames such as "a bottle of "what the hell are you looking at?"" It has also earned the unofficial slogan, "Buckfast: gets you f#cked fast"."

Nobody drinks a whole bottle of tequila.

A bottle of Buckfast is equivalent to drinking a whole sixpack of regular 5% beer. Personally I don't know how you drink a large quantity of the syrupy stuff. It is meant for sipping after dinner. The added caffeine means you can skip the after-dinner coffee.

So, it's an alternative method for the old Roman feather trick at banquets?

A Scottish man can get that messed up on the equivalent of one six pack of beer??

I'm sober for 11 years but back in my raging alkie days, I could and did drink whole bottles of hard liquor. My old boss still drinks a bottle of Johnny Walker Black, several shots of Jaeger, and numerous beers everyday of the week.

I know what Buckfast is because I read a book about the cultural malaise and self-loathing of Ulster protestants.

If you drink a 2/3 of a fifth you are going to end up spilling the rest.

A fifth of a typical 80 proof liquor contains '17 drinks', which means if you drink the whole thing at 7pm you won't be sober until noon the following day.

One of the nice things about having so much Scots blood is that I clear 1.5-2 standard drinks an hour, instead of the usual 1. The downside, of course, is needing the booze.

Yeah, that isn't a thing.
Scottish livers (I have one too) don't have superpowers.

This being Port Glasgow - and pretty normal for Port Glasgow - the young man was a ned, not a yob. His inamorata was therefore a senga.

Or a 'wee hairy'.

Spent many years in Port Glasgow. Went to Clune Park School, which I believe is still standing.

I haven't, but I'll look out for it. Thanks. I went to Clune Park in the Fifties. I can't imagine it would have changed that much.

It's a very charming read, told with great humour and fondness for the weans in her care.

What is the root of the word 'yob'?

I subscribe to the 'borrowed Russian word' theory.

How to say 'Hello old dear friend' in Rusky?
'Yob toyo mat'.

15%?
Weak sauce. Give me warm Sake.
20%, rapid absorption and much less hangover.

The knight who says EkiEkiPoontang: What is the root of the word 'yob'?

It's just about the only bit of nineteenth century backslang still in use: it's "boy" backwards.
