Having attended this event in the past Sumo arenas are kind of uniquely designed to be able to handle something like this at reduce capacity. You don't buy seats, but instead buy a boxed off area typically about 6X6 or 8X8 and you and your family stay within it's boarders unless going to the can or concessions. There were very few folks carrying items for sale in the arena.

Fans are always asked to refrain from shouting except for cheering at sumo. The Japanese are very good at masking up even before SARS was originally around so that should be fine too.

About the biggest differences I can see is capacity and probably lot's of hand sanitizer.

And the Sumo wrestlers will use their magical man mountain mind powers to push each other out of the ring without touching. If they can get the fans to believe this, they have it made.

It's funny because sumo wrestlers are NOT fat. They weigh hundreds of kilograms each, but it's all muscle.

Also their mawashi look like thong diapers.

25% capacity? Are the wrestlers vegan?

It's not the amount of fat, it's where it's located.

Carrying that much weight does take a toll on their body though.  Average sumo life expectancy is 10 years shorter than the national average for a non-sumo.

I suppose fans won't be allowed to do one of the coolest traditions in sports: throwing seat cushions into the dohyo after a wrestler gets a kinboshi win (lower-ranked wrestler beating a yokozuna).  It just looks so cool, and often the kinboshi win is the highlight of a wrestler's career, so it's a celebration too.

Most of the wrestlers live in just a few training houses so they have been mostly quarantined most of their lives already. Low risk of transmission there.

The sumo digest program on ESPN in the early 00's was great.

No prohibitions on photographers with cameras that shoot fireballs though, what an oversight.

I was led to believe by my facebook feed that Japanese people all use masks and therefore could not have a spike.

/ wear your masks,

You can still shake your hands with boxers
