"Coleman questioned the school boards themselves, meeting virtually, "If it's safe to open schools, why aren't you in the building right now? Tell me that. Why isn't the entire building open if it's safe to go back with 90,000 kids?"

That seems like a reasonable question.
They don't care about your kid. This is about using your child as leverage to force you to go back to a job with an unsafe work environment so you, or a loved one can die for the economy as you face catastrophic medical bills for your effort.

This is State mandated societal suicide that boils down to "let's you and them die".

This. It is biological warfare and the goal is to keep the unimportant people (98% of us) in their place.

I'm a professor at a University in a state that is seeing a huge rise in COVID cases. My University is insisting that we are going to have face to face classes, and assures us we'll be able to enforce mask rules and social distancing among students that I can't even force to read the farking syllabus.

I'd be really worried about having a will, but I don't have any assets other than student loan debt, so who cares?

I hate 2020.

Teacher,
I have a question, how many 50 caliber rounds does it take to sink a yacht?

I realize it's extreme but so is a senseless death.

And like magic, schools will reopen online.
People have to start saying NO to the morons.

I figured it might be difficult, given that Republicans have eroded the nation's norms and history, to teach children that tyrants are to be slain for the good of America, as Thomas Jefferson demands, but if Betsy DeVos gets her way, there will be a generation who lost their parents because of DeVos and Trump. That generation will be hungry for vengeance against the oligarchy.

I plan to survive this because I finished building myself an iron lung.

I'm a tutor, and I've just started to get pressure from parents to meet in person.

Fortunately, I'm self-employed, so I can say no.  Thus far, I've been able to do so politely, but that isn't necessarily going to continue.

Now that I've realized I can charge $100/hour without leaving my house, I may never go back.

Grow some balls Florida!
That's for the Governor, the health officials, the school officials and the teachers.

Los Angeles county and San Diego county have announced that they are NOT opening up schools in fall, it is 100% online/home schooled. Why? BECAUSE IT WOULD BE INSANE TO OPEN UP SCHOOLS, FOR EVERYONE!

*ehem*
Look Fleriduh, those two counties alone have a population greater than 1/2 of your fetid, drug crazed swampland state, and you are 1/4 snowbirds who don't have kids! If they can make the decision and figure it out, then you can too. If you had a pair, that is...

You do you, I guess, if "you" = "looking forward to disease", but don't be surprised if someone builds a wall at your border and arms it with machine guns.

If schools go ahead with the planned reopenings, how many mysterious fires do you think school buildings are going to suffer?

Parents don't want their kids to die for algebra. Kids don't want to get sick for gym class. And teachers don't want to die en mass for social studies.

Actually, yes:  standardized tests, in your case the MCAT, which is 4/5 science.

It's where the money is, and I'm actually a bargain.  I used to work at one of the behemoths in the field, and you wouldn't believe what people will pay for qualified tutors.  Fifteen years ago, my employers charged $220/hr for my time--if, that is, you were willing to pony up for 24 hours of tutoring, in advance.  And I couldn't keep up with demand.

I have friends and former peers who charge upwards of $500/hr.  It doesn't happen overnight, of course.  They, like me, have decades of experience in development and training as well as teaching and tutoring.  But the market is there, and relatively few people can handle the diverse science on the MCAT.

/hope that helps
//and that this doesn't make me sound like an ass
///kind of think it does

Florida teachers: this is the time to make a stand. Demand 100% remote learning; if you'd accept 50%, be prepared to back up to that, but it's mid-July, and you should be looking for a job for fall 2020 in another state.

Possible states to relocate to: California, New York, Oregon, Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, and any other states in New England. They most likely aren't hiring, but you should apply anyway, because unless DeSantis bends, it is wrong for you to stay in Florida.

This is the part of the movie where the protagonist's old life is over, and the question is, "where will they be at the end of act 3?"

They'll be something other than a teacher, or they'll be a teacher on another state, or (not joking) they might be stepping off an airplane in Canada, having asked for expedited residency.

Florida and DeVos want you dead. They're currently unwilling to bargain upwards from "we will use your noble, selfless spirit to kill you and juice the stock market / destroy public education." This is their endgame; what's your endgame?

It doesn't make you sound like an ass. It makes you sound like a good teacher who knows what they're worth on the open market where consumers will pay that much.

Math tutor here, $80-100 an hour is the going rate I am able to get away with.  Already setup for online tutoring too for fall.  Precalc and AP Calc tutoring are where you can charge that amount.  SAT/ACT math too.

hoping to have a nice side hustle in a few months.

Fark em. Organise with other teachers and the parents of students. Tell the school and desantis to get farked. If nobody shows up to school, they cant force you to go.

In fact, there should be a NATIONWIDE STRIKE from all teachers to send a message. NO SCHOOL OPEN TILL ITS SAFE, FARK TRUMP, FARK THE GOVERNORS, FARK THE PLAGUE RATS.

I've seen a *lot* of idiots here in Florida opposed to masks. I have seen very, very few in favor of opening the schools, even the backwoods Republicans.

2020-07-14 10:32:03 PM
The unthinkable is quickly becoming quite thinkable to me.  Deliberate exposure of children? Deliberate.  I'm sorry, but Trump, De Vos and their ilk are officially those domestic enemies folks in the military swear to defend the Constitution from.  Somebody needs to take one for the team here and apply the military solution to this problem before we get much further down the road. If you dont think that this piece of human garbage is going to punish us all for not re-electing him, you are high.  We can has exploding hamberder now?

Thanks a ton. Helps a ton. Truly.  I hadn't ever seriously considered it til I saw your post (and more "man, that probably does have a big need" not "how much?!").

I should have changed career goals the second I got my 95+%ile MCATs back... spent a bunch of time and money failing to get into med school and washing out of the whole genre.  Oops.  But that's a rant for a different thread time.

It's been so long I might not be able to update my knowledge enough, but it is one helluva thought.  Or maybe start with lower age science and such.

Thanks, honestly, for taking the time to give some details... sorry I didn't see this immediately and I hope you see my "thanks!"!

Florida teachers have been vocal in their opposition to the current plans, so I'm not sure why you're throwing them in.

Simple. If the teachers don't show up... there is no going to school. Collectively they can solve the problem by themselves...
