Spidercat, spidercat
Does whatever a spidercat does.
Is it tame? No it's not.
Close your eyes, and you'll find out.
Look out! Here comes the spidercat.
Look out! It's already on your back!

One thing you find out really fast about kittens is that those tiny claws are sharp!

We found some kittens born in our yard about a quarter of a century ago.

We took them in, of course, and raised them until they were old enough to give away, but we adopted one of the kittens, who was so fierce.

When I first picked her up off the ground when we found them, she was so tiny, about a week and a half old maybe, and she hissed. Lying in my palm, the tiny creature hissed like she would fight me. We kept her.

Unfortunately, she was miserable and we didn't know for quite a while. She was allergic to something, we are not sure what, and so she was big and angry and wouldn't let us pet her much or pick her up at all because she was itchy and uncomfortable. I figured it was just the same attitude she'd had as a tiny baby, the hissing and spunk, and her size was just her. She wasn't obese or anything.

But once the vet finally figured out that she was allergic to something (what? we don't know and it ultimately didn't matter) and put her on steroids, it was like she was a new cat.

She lost half her body weight from retained water and became so happy and friendly we could hardly believe it. We could pick her up and play with her. She just blossomed.

We had her for about twelve years and then our daughter was moving out and in the chaos, the kitty ran out of the house. She had never been outside since we'd found her litter, but apparently the new people walking in and out of the house and the moving of boxes and furntiture, etc., scared the crap out of her and she just bolted.

We did everything we could to find her, but she was gone. I hoped that someone found her and took her in and took her to the vet who would know to give her steroids, but realistically....

That's the only cat we've ever "lost" that way and it still bothers me.

The same list can be used for extended claws, when not ripping apart your flesh

My 15yr old female cat is extremely good about letting me trim her claws except for her front dewclaws. About 2 months ago I noticed that something wasn't right. She wasn't complaining or anything but 1 dewclaw was a full circle. She seemed to know that I was trying to help and she held still long to let me cut it. But she didn't like me trying to remove the pointy piece. I just kept a eye on it and the next day it was all gone.
