My dogs get a once a month pill that I am too drunk to name right now, but it keeps fleas and ticks off them. Not cheap, but worth every penny.

On of my local stations did a story on how ticks are going to be particularly bad this Summer. Problems is that a a lot of tick-borne diseases symptom out like COVID at first. I was ick for a while last summer--tested positive on a tick panel blood test.

Fun fact: If I were a god for a day I would nuke all farking ticks. All of them. I used to know vets who did research on them, so I'd feel sad for that but nope--farkers be pooofed outta existence.

Best hope it's not that Asian longhorn tick. They're in NJ now.

I've gotten my first two ever. Never while camping or hiking. I got them while doing yard work.

Did tick talk get banned?

Ticks are so 2019. This is 2020. If you want us to talk about ticks, there needs to be something new and bizarre about them. Like murder hornets or snakes that fly. Ticks that make your balls swell up like watermelons. That would be worthy of 2020 conversation.

DEET does wonders, people.

/Natural repellents are not very effective.

My dog gets the same pill. I'm not drunk, but I can never remember the name.

When I need more the vet knows the name

Just got back from a week in the Alberta Rockies. Checked for ticks every night before bed. Never had a tick in twenty-five years of backpacking. I've actually never even seen one, but I still farking check.

/mosquitos are so big you can swat them with a tennis racquet

Permethrin eats DEET's lunch. Spray your mucks with it and you're set.

They're almost as bad as the poison ivy this year

Horrible things. You can get proper tick removal thingies, I reccomend anyone with pets get several and chuck one in a pocket if out with the dog. These things are awesome as they remove the legs as well as the body so less risk of infection.

--- Warning: slightly graphic, including harm to an animal ---

We had a cat who started biting her own tail -- gnawing at it really. Eventually we could see the bone. The vet suggested having the cat's tail docked, which we did, albeit reluctantly. Then she started gnawing at one of her legs.

Only at that point did we make a connection between the beginning of her gnawing behavior and her anti-tick/flea medication being changed. After changing the anti-tick/flea medication back to the previous one, her gnawing behavior stopped. If we had realized this sooner, we need not have had her tail docked.

So please learn the names of your pets' medications, both the active ingredient and the product name, rather than relying on your vet to always give you the same product. Knowing these may help you to notice when the medications have changed. Changes in ingredients might be the source of new, sometimes destructive, behavior in your pets. I suggest taking a photo of every medicine box as you get it, keeping them in the same folder as your vet bills' PDFs.

The same goes for the medication of the people in your lives!

Signed,
Regrets Docking

Yep. I am not leaving the house anymore without DEET. Even if I'm just walking the dog along a maintained and paved bike path. Ugh.

Got home, took a shower, had the wife check my butthole, gooch, and back for ticks.

Some hippy: "Does DEET cause any health problems?" Me: "Probably, but it's not as bad as Lyme's Disease or Zika!"

Yeah, Skeeter's good with his meds. They mostly stay off of him. If they do bite him, they die. We check him when we come back from walks, too. We keep a jar fulla dead ticks. Mostly Lonestar. I like to keep an eye on what sort of pests are running around.
