Family games?  The only way to win is to not play.

almejita: realmolo: I just can't get into board games. At least, not the ones that have "chance" as a major component.. I find them frustrating. I can play them in a group and get through them (I'm not a sore loser or, or super-competitivie or anything), but only if I basically ignore the game and just treat it as a social activity.

Luckily, I don't have many friends that play them. Had an ex-girlfriend that always wanted to play them, and her friends always wanted me to play, because I'm a good conversationalist. I obliged, but...ugh. Didn't help that the ex *hated* that I would never pay much attention to the game itself.

You should have just killed her and her friends.  Voila...no more bored games.  That's what I usually do.

Oof, too violent.

Hold them at gunpoint and make them play Twister

We gave up game night after the Diplomacy 'incident'.

We still haven't found Frank, and Grandma says she'll never forgive us.

I've read longer articles on the back of cereal boxes.  Well, not articles, but things.  Longer things on the back of cereal boxes.

Games without chance are just chess. It's fine if you are gonna throw games or are just a bunch of novices, but destroying your 3 friends or whatever because you know the moves to win the game is just you felating your ego. It is all fun and games if you agree to it, of course.

I taught my kids to kick my ass in Catan and other games.

"NO MERCY!" I scream, laying down three more roads and buying a handful of development cards.
"I DEMAND BLOOD BEFORE I GIVE YOU ONE BRICK!" as they panic and throw their resource cards into the air where I eagerly snatch them from to maintain my empire.

Tuesday nights are fun at the Stone household.

I actually eased into it, letting them win, and then started beating them, and now I've created fun opponents who think as sneakily as I do and sometimes really do kick my ass at Catan (oldest kid had 2 plan Bs in place to win in an additional turn if I had blocked their plan A that turn) and Risk is just everybody praying to the dice because we're all bastards.  I won't mention Monopoly other than to say that I've really had to learn how to be a good sport when I land on hoteled orange spots and hand over all my goods.

Hills-Sachs_Legion: How about you teach your family to play new, non-shiatty board games.

Seriously this is a golden age of board games, nobody should be playing Monopoly if they can help it.
