(YouTube)   Like toothpaste and orange juice, Minty Maniacs and O'Rangers have left a bad taste in their competitors' mouths by sweeping all four ML2020 events to date. Perhaps the Long Jump will cleanse the palate. 4:15 ET/1:15 PT, it's Jelle's Marble Runs   (youtube.com) divider line

More like just cheering on my team is all. What I want to know is How do the Oceanics still keep getting invites to this? Look, I know they did well in the Qualifier but they always tank when it comes serious game time. I would rather have them give the Chocolatiers or Team Primary a free pass than see them fail again.

The qualifiers did go by really fast this year.  In years past they were a multi-week event, but this time they bunched all the qualifying events into a 20-minute video.  From what I understand JMR was having financial trouble and wasn't sure if they'd be able to produce ML2020 at all (YouTube has really cut its payouts this year).  Then when Last Week Tonight came in with their sponsorship they had to scramble to get ML2020 up and running, which meant they didn't have a lot of time to spend on the qualifiers.  I don't know if that meant some teams got "lucky" or what, but, yeah, some of the teams that did well in qualifiers are struggling in the main event.

Wait...wait....wait..."financial trouble"? I mean I know people gotta eat but how much do a few bags of marbles, some plastic track, non-clumping sand and a few cheap cameras cost? Not like he has to go buy new stuff every video.  Now, if he did this as a side thing and Jelle's main job laid them off, then that's one thing. But if all they were banking on was income from marble videos....not a great plan. Would explain the expanded merch push though (or they could have already had that planned before the world went to crap as I know that pain. Boy, I know that pain).

*pretty much just taking the "it's just marbles" side on this thread but I love the videos and the people who do them make some fine mindless entertainment you can actually get sucked into caring about. Hopefully they do well enough to keep it going. Hmmm, maybe we could all chip in and sponsor a "Fark.com" marble league or something one year....

O'Rangers have a history of juicing, so forgive me if I'm skeptical of their early success.

The camera setups are apparently pretty expensive.  But from what I understand it's compensating everybody else for their time that's the main expense...I think there are around 10 people involved as getting everything set up down to the millimeter does take some time.  And YouTube really cut their payments this year once COVID-19 hit, as I mentioned.  From personal experience as a consultant, when your contracts get cut it's easy to say from the outside, "well, surely you can just take that hit."  But if you've already budgeted for the year (or you were under last year and hoped to recover), it's not that easy to rearrange your finances.

Like I said, "I know..Boy, I know" as we had planned a big park skating event: rented the park for a couple of days, had instructors coming out (airfare, hotel, etc), merch for sale, contests, other companies coming to vend and give out prizes, etc. Then "the bug" shut everything down two weeks beforehand and we are still working on getting our deposit monies back for things. Sadly, we didn't get a Force Majureclause in the insurance and even then, some companies are making you get separate pandemic coverage.

Now I can see where the physical labor is a huge coast for JMR but the cameras? Yes, the initial cost is there but once you buy them, there isn't a whole lot more you need aside from the lighting (try buying used in both cases to save a few $) and then storage costs & editing time (again gotta pay someone to do that). Crap, now I would really like to know what their costs are per series. That would make a cool extra episode showing all the behind the scenes stuff that goes into making them. We were playing with the idea of doing something with the hydraulic press guy but it fell thru in the early stages (got busy, let it sit for a while & it was too late when we went back to be more serious about it as the person who runs that channel and a few others was miffed at us over it). Maybe I will see how things go over the next few months as things pick up and send JMR an email to see what a "banner" in the stands would cost for a series. Considering the number of views the videos get, it might be worth it.

If anyone's been juicing, it's the Savage Speeders hands down.
