"Where there are little flare-ups or hotspots, that can be dealt with on a school-by-school or a case-by-case basis," she said, without providing any recommendations for what schools should do if outbreaks occur.

Here's hoping her lungs become a hotspot.

I had cnn on muted, and looked up to see this was on.  DeVos was wild-eyed.  With no sound, and without context, I would have assumed she was terrified or in a rage.

Good.

"There is nothing in the data that would suggest that kids being back in school is dangerous to them," DeVos said...

O.K., first of all there is MIS-C, note that the "C" stands for Children.

Second, it's not just the kids we are worried about. How many teachers and school staff are in higher risk groups if they contract the infection, Betsy? How many kids go home to at-risk parents, siblings, and grandparents?

It's not like the plan is to just turn the kids loose in school unsupervised, a la Lord of the Flies. Or hell, maybe that *is* the "plan."

She's just looking to reduce the education budget. They allocate per student. Fewer students, more tax breaks!

Betsy DeVos' brother Erik Prince met with a Kremlin guy in Seychelles.

She's probably in on the Russian bounty cash in with Trump.

I grant her no benefits of doubt.

She seems to be deliberately designing orphan factories.

We're already letting them kill brown children from other countries, including on American soil, and we clearly have no problem with maniacs with guns mowing down schools full of American children already, so why should this be any different?

I sometimes wonder if America will ever stand up for its children.  Has it ever before?

No, they want to reallocate the money to private schools that do open in the fall.

She is draining the public funds for vouchers for private schools. It has been her mission in life since she got there.

I listened to this whole thing TWICE(I'm a masochist, OK) today. I'm amazed I heard anything over the sound of my teeth grinding. One bit I did hear was her brag about how they have partnered with local districts to provide waivers to help the districts such as testing waivers and STUDENT LOAN WAIVERS. What the actual fark does student loans have to do with a K-12 education? On what planet is she living?

We attempted distancing and masks at a few graduation parties. Look how well that worked out. My wife is a teacher and the current plan to reopen is logistically impossible. I don't see the point... worrying about survival does not make for an environment that promotes learning anything.

The worst part of all of this is that it's our most disadvantaged parents who are going to be *forced* to send their kids back to school because they have to go back to work or continue working and they simply can't afford to leave their children at home.  Parents of differently abled children are going to *need* the resources that are only available through their children's schools.  Children lacking food security rely on schools for meals...

Those are the kids and families that Devos is willing to sacrifice.

I feel terrible for thinking it, but my first thought is that it's too late.  We doomed these families to this fate decades ago and didn't really do much to address their problems then.  I'm not optimistic.

Maybe we'll call them heroes or something.

This constant bleating of the right-wing talking point (and lie of omission) that says "kids don't get sick from COVID" makes my blood boil.  Not only does it leave out the Teachers and Staff who could die in higher numbers, it ignores the latest info like the fact that kids ARE dying and getting lifelong health problems that are in itself very bad outcomes.

(Also remember your math when some Dunning-Kruger with a stupid beard and baseball cap talks about how a 1% death rate isn't a big deal.)

Betsy Devos ought to be tarred and feathered.  Literally.  This is precisely the type of shiat it used to be done for.

Every choice is increasingly morally hazardous.  In large part because of the covidiots.

It feels like shades of climate denial.  Just fart around and politicize it until it's too big of a problem to deal with.  Then shrug and fire up the gallows humor.

This is a decision based on ideology.  It's so stupid that it seems that is the only reason they would be doing it.  They are trying to fit a square peg in a covid-size hole with a size that changes daily.  They don't care what it will cost... ideology demands that we are servicing the different parts of our economy instead of doing their farking jobs and fight back on the national level.

It's not the government's failure. There were plans for this.

The failure belongs to Donald Trump, his administration, his enablers in Congress, and more broadly to Republican/conservative ideology and policy goals, which left our nation brittle and unprepared in the face of a challenge we could have and should have chosen to overcome.

jayphat: I listened to this whole thing TWICE

i listened twice. once on CNN then fox news sunday. in both cases she got asked repeatedly what criteria to use. what exactly the CDC guidelines were or meant. and both shows ask how were she and trump going to cut off congressional funding.  it was especially nice to see wallace make her squirm.

wallace also had the big wig from john hopkins on and got him to confirm that ttrump/devos can't screw with the money. and that reopen no matter what was a really bad idea. he basically said yeah we don't have enough data to know how bad an idea this is, and while kids do seem to get it less and less effects we don't know how they do as spreaders.  at best he was luke warm on full on school in the fall.

and no one i saw had the faintest idea what to do in areas with hot spots. not even how to define them.

Of course she's angry.

Normally the Secretary of Education is a very low-profile post in the Administration.

If everything went according to plan, she could have just sat there and remade regulations and Federal education infrastructure in a way to favor for-profit schools, lenders, and generally turn our schools into a predatory business.

Now she's being called on about hard questions of public health policy and education and being directly confronted about policies that WILL cause thousands of children to die if implemented.. . but the alternative would be to hurt profits.

She's pissed because what should have been a quiet, fairly easy, low-profile job has become increasingly obvious, public, high-profile, and now center-stage on the national scene. . .which means everyone's watching what she's doing and has been doing.

Trump made decisions based on only his re-election campaign.  This instantly politicized the situation.  And people who were trying to make decisions on the facts had to line up against him.  Then Trump and all his cultists whined that the "Leftists" politicized the situation.  Actually this doesn't just apply to COVID, this pretty much describes the whole Trump presidency.

We don't stand up for worker's rights, we don't defend first responders, we don't provide aid for veterans, we'd rather pay extra to punish homeless than house them. We jail drug dealers for for-profit prisons. We cram the elderly into inferior housing and care facilities and tell them to die for the economy.

Jail children at the border, won't implement any regulations to curtail school shootings. Don't stop or slow rent inflation so people can be housed.

If you can't produce labour you don't get healthcare and are doomed to die or be ill.

But, we have limitless funds for bombs and weapons of death, just no funds to assist the persons armed with them.

In short, we're a nation of monstrous demons and war mongers.

We're a nation born of white imperialist, colonial conquerors, and warmongers.  It's difficult to change our nature if we even can.
