It's Portland - if you're there voluntarily, no one's gonna listen to you complain about this shiat.  You knew the job was dangerous when you took it, Fred.

You forgot Extremo the Clown.  And it wasn't an Elvis museum, it was the 24 Hour Church of Elvis.  Also another fun, weird thing about Portland I miss are Mondo Croquet (played in fursuit a couple times).

More practically, I also miss when downtown Portland had public restrooms, and the Henry Weinhard brewery just plain overwhelming the smell of hot piss, hot garbage, BO and the open sewer smell of the Willamette River on hot days.  Hot beer really is a preferable smell to what replaced it.

Given how long it took Portland to go from the logging bust to the late 90s, I'm expecting Portland to have another 5 good years sometime about 20 years after I'm dead.

Hello, 911, I'd like to report a black man having fun in public. Yes, acting like he owns the biking trail, and he's being very threatening playing his guitar like he doesn't have care in the world. I'm so very frightened. Please help me.

Oh yes.  Slippery slope!  It's just a matter of time until the entire Appalachian trail is is paved too!  You must know the type.

Aah, yeah, probably the same type that keeps NIMBYing bringing Portland's functionally obsolete cycleways up to modern standards by widening them to two bicycle lanes and adding sidewalks...

Give a parks department enough time and they will pave over the whole damn trail system.

I have a busy community rail-trail behind my house that goes all the way along "Lake Wilderness."   People love it because it gets you to the commercial parts of town through a lovely rural walk.   It takes you to the park by the lake, and will eventually, if the county gets their shiat together, the state park a couple of miles away.

Except the county wants to pave it over first.  For reasons, I guess.   The town went ape shiat over that plan, but I imagine it will happen in the name of "progress."

Honestly a suburban/urban cycleway shouldn't be in the parks department in the first place, it should be under transportation.  If only for the fact that parks departments usually Do Not Care about transportation connections and do a shiat job at managing a cycleway system.

I rode that trail three times a week for a couple of years.   It carries bikes, strollers, pedestrians, way too many off leash dogs, and the occasional horse.

I don't necessarily disagree with you on who manages the trail system, but most transit agencies are focused almost exclusively on expanding vehicle capacity, and would probably be more inclined to pave trails than less.

So, probably a good candidate for a cycleway with a sidewalk next to a bridleway.  See also the Pacific Electric Trail between Los Angeles and San Bernardino.

That's my point.  It's not.  It already carries bike and equestrian traffic.  It needs no changes at all, just the occasional maintenance.

What it needs is extension to the state park - "Flaming Geyser" if you're mapping stuff.  That would basically allow someone in North Seattle to make their way damn near to Pierce County without ever seeing a road.
