And Canada shouldn't, the US is farking it up.  That doesn't mean there aren't lots of other countries with similar problems, but it wouldn't be as much fun to not solely focus on hate-blaming the US

I'm glad I did so much international travel when I did, because I think it's over. Unfortunately I still have a crap load of FF miles.

Not many Americans have or need passports.  A lot of Americans never travel anywhere but within the US.

I remember a thread when I first got here where Farkers were arguing that travelling across the US exposes you to more different cultures and better diversity than travelling across Europe.

It was a kind of wake up call for me.

They do. The common reaction I saw on a FOX and Yahoo article about it was "Yeeaahhh!!! And stay out!!" No joking. They are literally celebrating the country becoming a pariah state.

Until an effective vaccine has developed, that ship has sailed. And then once the vaccine is created and approved a good 30% of the population is going to refuse it because somebody on Facebook said their grandmother once heard at the grocery store that Bill Gates has a microchip blah blah blah. We're just a bunch of dumbasses anymore.

I just got my brand new passport last week and thought the same thing.  Maybe we can still travel to countries that are as big a tire fire as the US?  I've never been to Rio or Delhi.

You'd experience more diverse cultures every 50 miles whilst travelling in Europe, who ever argued otherwise, well, doesn't need a passport.

Sweden used to be the most "powerful", but they'd obviously lost that status. Now its probably Denmark or Germany.

And I had just picked up enough FF miles to take another overseas trip back in February too - I'm glad I've gotten to go as much as I have already. I've gotten used to being holed up for now, and I definitely understand why nobody wants us at the moment, but I sure would like to get out of here for a little while.

johnny_vegas: Does per capita count?

It sure does, yesterday we had 371 cases of the 'rona in the whole country, the US had some 62,000, doing some quick rough and dirty math, that an infection rates approx 16 x more per capita.

Listened to Caribbean Hot FM on Tune In [Android APP.], first American passenger plane arrived today, and both locals and passengers were interviewed.

The passengers weren't that interesting, just some "Karen" who said she'd rather be in Barbados, but had to settle for St. Lucia.

The locals were mostly pissed about the government putting everyone at risk for "the Mighty Dollar". Tourism is apparently very important to St. Lucia, and well, tough call for them to make I guess.

2020-07-10 4:28:22 PM
Technically it's where you're a physical resident of, not what your passport says. For example, US expats are not banned in the same way as citizens who are trying to travel *from* US territories.

My wife is a Candian citizen, and we're both Finnish citizens. We can exit if we have to, but by the cabin we're "safe" as anyone can be per se. We don't interact with people often, even when I fly it's just to practice instrument approaches and not get rusty.

I do have my BFR due soon, so that's a worry. Have to find a CFI in bumfark nowhere with zero traffic to feel safe.

Yeah, per the WSJ today, we can't enter Europe. But apparently we're still welcome in (I think) Iceland? For now.

And the rest of the world absolutely shouldn't let any of us near them. Seriously, that would be stupid as fark.

Not that I want to get on a plane and fly anywhere anyway.

Most countries there only survive (financially) due to tourism. When we flew down there, even years ago, most governments made dang sure nobody (even in our little 6 place piston) was charged a landing fee. Even on Nassau, the bigger airports (e.g. MYNN) we were only charged a minimal parking fee, and that was waived if we bought 20 gallons (in a plane our size) gas. Gas prices were kept at the same rate as the continental US.

I don't think anyone would want to compare the US and Canada's outcomes, that's pretty evident.  However, you can add France and the UK to your list of industrialized nations you mentioned above.

Yeah, I argued for a while then gave up.

Anybody who believes you'd be exposed to more culture going from LA to Boston instead of Barcelona to Warsaw doesn't know what they're talking about.  And probably never went to Europe.

Listen, just because almost every other developed nation is having demonstrably better results by doing shiat right-wing idiots SWEAR would never work doesn't mean American conservatives are 'bad at governing' or that America is 'too stuck up its own ass to admit that we aren't literally God's flawless gift to the Earth' or anything like that.
