I have no idea why this isn't a bigger issue.  This and education.  And criminal reform...  75% of American youth between the ages of 18 and 24 are not fit for military service due to physical (fitness mainly), mental (lack of education/skills), or legal disqualifications.

This just isn't a health thing.  It's a national security travesty.  Why aren't the red states all over this?

/its still a health thing.
//and economic thing.

Corn syrup goes in Food. Corn makes Corn syrup. Iowa grows corn. First vote's in Iowa.

/No idea how much of that is accurate or relevant.

Start taxing fat.  Problem solved.  Make the tax $10 per lb overweight, per month.  With doctor's verification.  If a person is at the target BMI, they may get a waiver for 6 months.  If a person chooses to not submit weight verification make the fine $1000 per month.  If they forge weight verification, have them executed via cannibal thunderdome.

Fatness solved.

I'm opposed to this in that you'll get both fatasses (Like me) and extremely built people (Arnold Schwarzenegger, had a BMI of 33 when he was at his contest weight, for example) as over BMI.

We can modify it so that a doctor can say "not a fatass, just really built".  But if the doc is found forging " not a fatass" waivers, they are executed via cannibal thunderdome.

There, problem solved.

Genetically I am predisposed to be obese (thanks moms side of the family) I keep in the middle of the just overweight band by basically not eating at all for 16 hours a day and walking as much as I can with a demanding job and 3 young kids.

Seriously I could eat only 1400 calories of vegetables and lean meat a day and not lose more than a few pounds before plateauing forever, at a 28.5 BMI.

So all you skinny bastards saying the rest of us just need to try harder and should be motivated by execution can suck a big one

Eat less than 1400 calories then.  You aren't breaking laws of physics producing more energy than you take in.  Are you photosynthetic and make energy from light?

Or, maybe you are doing over unity energy or mass production?  In that case we need to put you in a lab and start experiments on you to determine where the over unity mass and energy is coming from.  We need to turn you into a clean source of energy and find ways to scale up your situation and use you as a faster than light star drive.

There needs to be a waiver for fat thunder cannibals, at least a work exemption for those in the dome.

Once convicted, there is no food other than human meat.  I will accept that a person may choose when they are hungry and volunteer for the thunderdome.  With those that have iron wills starving to death.  In which case any person in the thunderdome stables may eat any person who voluntarily starves to death.  But once in the cannibal thunderdome you only leave as poop.  And no other food goes in.

I'll take that bet.

Put you in a room where food is controlled. Feed you 1400 calories a day. Your choice of eats. After a month, we'll see what happens.

How much are you in for?

I don't understand how people allow themselves to get obese. You have one body. Take some pride in it. And yes for 99%+ of people it is easy to not be obese. Make good choices.

It's something about the environment, but I'm not sure what. I'm obese, but I lost a lot of weight twice in my life: once when I lived in rural China, and once when I lived in Ethiopia. Gained it all back when I moved back home.

There are plenty or reasons that people can't lose weight. Lack of time to prepare healthy food, high stress lifestyles, lack of money for healthy foods, and yes, some genetic predispositions that makes losing weight more difficult.

But if your calories in are less than X (where X is your minimum required calories a day to maintain your current weight) you will lose weight. Period.
