Grandma must be willing to sacrifice herself.  And we must be willing to sacrifice the children.  But they blame everyone in the middle for making it worse with their irresponsible behavior (at least DeSantis does - plus those filthy brown poors who are the backbone of Florida's massive agricultural business).

Hard to see how anyone from any generation would look upon this favorably.

"We spent months saying that there were certain things that were essential," DeSantis told reporters in Jacksonville. "That included fast food restaurants. It included Walmart. It included Home Depot."

Wal-Mart (and Home Depot) sell groceries.  You know, food.   We can argue the merits of closing off some or all of the rest of these stores, but they do serve an essential function.

Home Depot (and Lowes, Menard, etc) sell appliances, such as refrigerators and hot water heaters, which can break, requiring replacement.  Again, somewhat essential.

Fast food restaurants sell food.  Essential.  Hardly good or healthy, but still food.  And if you have kids climbing the walls, some chicken nuggets and cheeseburgers might just calm them down for a few minutes.  Again, essential.

Do these people EVER engage brain before putting mouth in gear?

I want my kids back in school because canceling everything is more of a threat than the virus.  My just turned teenager is smarter than average but we just had her on suicide watch for 3 days.  We were just getting back to semi normal practices, following all the protocols and had a tournament set up for late July.  Lord Ducey cancelled all gyms which killed any chance.

WTF did I just read?

My just turned teenager asked me with tears streaming down her face.  Daddy, we did everything they said to do, you said if we follow all the rules, everything will be OK, we followed all the rules and they cancelled us anyway.  She fell into a depressive state and sobbed for 2 solid days and we had her on suicide watch, because I was not going to let her be alone.

It's not "airier" in a classroom. Not at all. My school is rather old and there are times the HVAC goes tits up. Even if it is working the temperature changes dramatically due to all the body heat. It's gross.

Can't socially distance either. Not in most classrooms. The ACT requires 3' between students and we have to reduce the number of test takers in each room to 20 or 25 kids. But that's possible because it's juniors only. To truly social distance at 6' I don't think we could put more than 10-15 kids in a room.

It's going to be a mess and a bunch of kids and school staff will get sick and some will die. And personally I think those responsible ought to be brought up on charges for that.

About that "distance at will" idea.  Have you been in a Florida WM lately?  But I do like the idea of a school uniform based on Walmart "service associate" attire.

Note for The Guv.  Walmarts were never closed statewide in Florida.  Schools were.  Now why did we think that was OK back in April?

You (and she) are going to have to accept facts. This disease may turn out to the be most consequential and life-altering event in our lives, and it may mean permanent changes. It may mean she will never go back to a physical school. If a safe and effective vaccine can't be found---and that is a distinct possibility----then it may mean life changes forever.

You have an obligation as a father to gently help her realize this, not to force others to all get sick because you can't accept the reality and severity of this crazy and unexpected life swerve.

Should have read the whole thread before posting.

As someone who went through remote instruction with a kid in the spring here in Florida, I predict they will just try to leverage the e-learning systems that districts already use. The results will be uneven based on the teacher's comfort with the technology as well as variable access to resources by district.

It's not going to be pretty.

Of course, they also aren't providing the resources to safely open the schools. Some of the schools in my district have antiquated A/C systems that don't always work (which is fun in Florida), and yet one of the key ways to stop infection is to upgrade those systems. Good luck when you don't even have the money to fix  or replace them to begin with!

DeMented DePlorable. I can't watch his bullshiat verbose so-called press monologues anymore where he lies from start to finish about how he has contained this thing and no one needs to worry. Plenty of tests (lie), plenty of ventilators (shut UP about those damn ventilators), plenty of PPE(lie), masks aren't really needed (lie). The Walmart comparison is only the latest idiotic lie he's told.
