You think having a college degree in a red state means you can work from home?  Heh.  We have *way* too many people here, in *this* red state, that *have* to have people in the office so they feel important.  And like typical right-wingers they have an excuse to say the reason is something other than this.

This might be tribalism, but it isn't exactly unexpected either. If you are stupid enough to vote for virtually anyone on the right, then it makes sense that you'd be stupid enough not to wear a mask to stick it to the "elites".

I just had the pleasure of going through Missouri to visit my mom. I stopped in Higginsville Missouri. Absolutely nobody was wearing a mask except the kid at the McDonald's counter and he had it pulled down around his neck. We went to Excelsior Springs Missouri. A few of the seniors had it on, but no one else. I got to Liberty where the hospital was. At least there, a good portion of people were wearing it. The hospital workers obviously were. It's like Missouri's not even aware there is still a pandemic going on. They think because they're in small town USA they are free from this virus. All it takes is somebody like me driving through stopping to get gas stopping to shop stopping to eat. If I'm positive and I spread it to them it's going to hit them like wildfire. Just too stupid understand that. Any little small town along the highway should be treated just like a big city. But God forbid we should take away their freedoms

I was working at a customer's house last month and she was having an online meeting. The subject of the meeting was the importance of everyone showing up for online meetings. I've had the pleasure of listening in on many meetings since this pandemic began and it seems to me there are a whole lot of people that don't seem to do anything of benefit to society.

People in blue states are less likely to know how to change a tire or their oil, less likely to actually do anything useful in their jobs, have soft girly hands, can't go outside in the summer for longer than 15 minutes without fainting, and call 911 when their neighbor's dog poops on their artisan-designed front yard.

Actually, I live in the richest red town in the country, and we all wear masks, many are effete snobs, and they wouldn't know how to drink a cup of black coffee, or make it for that matter. They'd rather mask up and go into the local convenience store, get close to many unmasked tourists, have their coffee cup touched by at least two other people, just so they can complain to the cashier about how nobody is masking up. Hey, what's your Fark account number?

Out yourself, subby, you elitist snob. I bet you think you're a real egalitarian. But here you are, stoking some class division, probably because you're a big fat white guy who feels kind of guilty about how you thrived while the rest of the world fell into disrepair and crappy service jobs. But you aren't honest enough to admit it, so you'll do what every other fat white old guy does--tell everybody how you're actually more special and more deserving than those OTHER people, and that's why things are the way they are.
Except not why you're fat, because you sure didn't DESERVE to get fat. You're just living life to the fullest, and why can't these other losers do it like that?

But then you'd have no servants. It's always something.

2020-07-09 11:52:21 AM
I live in North Carolina, so not a red state, but not a blue state. Yet. We're getting there. The town I live in is fairly conservative and is sandwiched between two large urban areas. About 90% of the people I see when I'm out and about running errands are wearing a mask. They may not like having to do it, but they're doing it. My boyfriend and I did the grocery shopping yesterday and saw maybe two or three people not wearing one, but everyone else did, including the few kids we saw. So, I'm at least heartened that where I live, people are taking it seriously. Can't say the same for the rest of the state.

2020-07-09 11:58:45 AM
In my tiny universe, NOT wearing a mask is akin to assault or worse.

2020-07-09 11:59:21 AM
I live in a full on red county in the very red state of Tennessee (Middle Tennessee - south of Nashville).  I get some groceries from Walmart delivered to my car every few weeks. Canned goods, staples, frozen chicken, dog food, etc.  While Mrs. Fan and I wait in the car, we see wave after wave of dopes heading into the store with no masks.  I hate to generalize, but nearly half are smoking, more than 80% are seriously overweight. Most look like they slept in their clothes all night. Usually several kids in tow, also with no masks.

Voting for nearly anyone on the right or left is pretty stupid. Parties are formed to give power to individuals, and take it away from the people. Read Washington's farewell speech sometime. Pretty brilliant for someone that didn't want to be President.

FOOK THIS POV

' get a college degree so they can get a job that they can do from home, "

The world does need ditch diggers to, and it is not reasonable to PRETEND everyone can get a  collected degree and can get a safe from harm office job.

The collective LIE of the free market is that everyone can.
It is not true, there is only so much need of anything and there is need of basically manual. skilled labor.

What needs to happen is that blue collar labor jobs need to stop being treated as lower class jobs and lower social importance jobs.
If i were a blue collar worker i'd hate everyone that acted like a college degree job deserves more.Anyone that claims more pay for a no life risk job, but also claims to be a pro liefer, is a lying sack or dick turds and your god knwos it. If you believed in the sanctity of human life, then any job that had intrinsic risk to life and health would have to pay more than any job that did not, or be morally repugnant.Best way to make someone want to be your enemy is make it clear in your social structure they are lower ranks and less important and that is made clear by having the jobs that risk life and limb have opt give up the lion's share of the value they generate by taking those risks, to the people that take the least such personal risks in the business structure.

As someone in a deep red area whose family all work in the service/hospitality industry, I hate this POV in my bones.

Did it occur to anyone that we can pretty much live our lives here in rural Appalachia without ever coming within six feet of anyone for any length of time outside of work? And indoor work is temp checks, masks, gloves, and constant sanitizer. But, except for me--who has no work rn--we can't work from home. I mean, virtual infant care, whitewater rafting, fly fishing trip, or ski lessons, anyone? Anyone?

And before it starts, there aren't enough cashier jobs to go around for everyone here and not even enough internet connectivity to conduct a needed doctor's appointment, much less hold an online job. So, changing careers isn't an option. If the end of tourism and work outside the home is the goal, this country had better have some UBI forthcoming. There are a good many people like us who've trained our whole lives for careers we enjoy who will be without livelihood. And will we be selling off the National Park, then? Without visitors, funding will tank.

Or, maybe, just maybe, we could put our effort into shaming areas that have more than a couple hundred cases and less than ten deaths over a couple thousand square miles. Or, hear me out, maybe we could stop shaming altogether and do something productive.

2020-07-09 1:56:43 PM
It seems as if subby and others on this thread are bitter about acquiring massive amounts of debt to receive a useless piece of paper, then finding out they have no discernable skills that relate to the real world job market. Don't worry I'm sure that masters in political science will come in handy at Starbucks or an Amazon distribution center. You're doing great!

So this shows Trump voters were more likely to take covid seriously early on, and are now tired of being locked up.

Meanwhile Clinton voters early on were denying covid was a real issue and got sick and now are quarantined.

But in the end its not adjusted for population, so it's meaningless.
