Like I said yesterday, that statement was some of the worst chattering-class bullshiat I've read in a long time.  It was almost a satire of the disconnected from reality ivory tower professor stereotype.

This goes back to the zombie idea notion.  Stop defending ideas that have been settled.  Trickle-down never worked, The Civil War was about SLAVERY not states rights, Democrats are super racist/created the Klan etc., the system is not rigged against people of color.

If you continue to push these debunked lies, you should be cancelled, your opinion on other things is worthless too because you lie for money.

If you say that my opinions are bad, you are literally a Jacobin who is literally guillotining not only me but the entire concept of free speech, which means I get to say whatever I want whenever I want on whatever platform I want and you get to sit and listen politely and tell me I am very smart and interesting and clap and give me a high-six-figure salary for saying it.

Kerry Greenidge, black female historian, and Author and trans activist Jennifer Finney Boylan are both out; Professor Greenidge's name has been removed and Jennifer Finney Boylan has expressed regret about signing.
So, were they told pre-signing that JK Rowling's name would be on it?

I'm pretty much done with all kinds of right wing a-holes who act like it's reasonable or justifiable to be racist, sexist, or just plain stupid and angry if it gets them ratings even if it screws up the country. I do not care how they are torn down or destroyed. They have no sense of sympathy or kindness for anyone else and I have none for them. Maybe other people will get caught up in it, I just don't care. Maybe I'm mean, maybe I'm an asshole, but I just do not care. The country has reached the end of the road on this bullshiat.

The Streisand effect is about people with massive platforms accidentally amplifying criticism of themselves by responding to it. That is what's going on here, but you've got it dead-ass backwards.

JKR is a near-billionaire with fourteen million followers, the most popular fiction series in the last few decades, and a standing invitation to appear on any TV show she likes.

Her opponents in this are some random trans kids and fan bloggers.

Who, exactly, is accidentally amplifying whose criticism by broadcasting it with all the power of celebrity?

I guess I should be happy that the Fark Admins finally decided to let a link about Harper misrepresenting the intent of the letter, and of adding endorsements to it without permission, but that they only did so through some bullshiat "But muh freezed peach" conservative blog that's misrepresenting why people are angry and removing themselves from the letter is pretty farking telling of where they stand on the issue.

He's been spending the last couple of years demanding everyone be nice to bigots because if we hurt their feelings they won't learn what a terrible thing bigotry is.

This Harper letter is his latest attempt at staying relevant in a world that's learned why that doesn't work.

Fireproof: I've never liked him myself, but what's Fark's beef with Noam Chomsky? Isn't he like, the libbiest lib to ever lib?

Generative grammar was a necessary corrective to behaviourist theories of language but doesn't correspond to empirical studies of neurolinguistic processing and doesn't have much predictive value, so it's really only useful as an idle speculative project of model-making. It's just one more dead end in the branching bush of philosophical dead ends that run through Bertrand Russell back to the Vienna Circle of logical positivists -- of building enormous and inadequate scaffoldings of pseudo-rigorous logic to describe systems that are dynamic, ambiguous, relative and indeterminate.

No.  Harper shopped it out as a condemnation of Internet bullying.

As someone with serious foot-in-mouth syndrome that wouldn't mind being famous one day, overzealous cancel culture terrifies me, but I really doubt that this letter doesn't also take their disdain for it too far.

There is nothing wrong with the idea of cancel culture in theory. When celebrities with unfavorable views aren't hired to make millions that has always been a thing.

The problem is that it turned into a digital Lynch mob going after even poor people that cannot afford to suffer. Denying job opportunity to rich celebrities is good. Putting the now former store clerk into homelessness and starvation is not. The internet mob has no concept of due process or proportional response. It ignores the concept of punishment must fit the crime. It just destroys everything in its path

There was a lot wrong with that letter.  Calling someone who as a long history of being openly racist in his appearances "a little clumsy with words" was complete bullshiat, as was claiming that the editor fired for asking Cotton to publish his murder fantasy in the NYT OpEd was terminated for "an unpopular opinion".

It was pure gaslighting from start to finish, with a lot of false equivalence, ignorance, and "Won't someone please think of the rich, socially insulated bigots" thrown in for good measure.

Yep. The problem is that an Internet mob is not better than a real one. They're too blunt of an instrument. They might tear down a statue of Lee put up by a bunch of KKK members, but they might also tear down a statue of an abolitionist, as they did recently, because they were too angry to pay attention to who it actually was.
