based on what I've learned from the red-hats on this site in the last few weeks, that isn't a noose. It's a door pull and you're the racist for thinking it's anything else.

I might be guilty as charged.  However, as to headline submissions:

"Puns.  Personal preference, I'm just not a fan.  I will greenlight them, but I prefer not to...  Not saying I never greenlight them, but I'll take almost anything else over them. "

I've only seen the first of those movies and I don't remember that scene but it looks like a bunch of white people about to hang. I mean, if it was due to hanging black people specifically because they're black I could see it I suppose but this seems really dumb.

Actually, it's from the Fark Newsletter Tue, May 14, 2019 in which he also writes "There are several admins, but at any given moment, only one of us is designated as the person who's on queue duty.  From about 7 a.m.ish 'til about 5 p.m.ish on weekdays, that person is me."

So it's a recent quote, and he absolutely still does.

I know!  All those lynchings lately just ruined it!  And the noose had such a benign reputation from 1865-1981.

No. There isn't any reason to be angry...

But, it really IS poorly designed merchandise. It is JUST a noose on a necklace, with no other indicators with it to give it context. It is innocent, but by gawd it is dumb and should be taken away. Terrible idea/design. And definitely gives the wrong impression.

The product ain't remotely racist.  it referred to fictional pirates.

But... selling a commemorative murder device as a kids toy is a really friggin stupid idea.

Back in the early '90s in grad school, in the back of one of our labs, there was a noose hanging from the ceiling. Nobody knew where it came from (it predated the arrival of anyone in our research group). The concept of it being a racist symbol never occurred to any of us. We looked at it as dark, suicide-related humor. Grad school stressing you out? There's the exit, right over there.

Not that joking about suicide is much better.

Anyway, I hope at some point in the intervening years someone got rid of it.

I've been looking at handmade silver items, trying to find a gift for my wife on our 25th anniversary later this month. I saw a silver noose necklace last night and thought it odd (although I've known some goth types who could totally own it). But to run into it twice in 24 hours - well, that's just bizarre.

2020-07-08 7:23:28 PM
That was so stupid.

MY GOD WHO COULD HAVE THOUGHT OF SUCH A THING?!?!...Okay, several pirates were hung in the movie including Jack Sparrow, BUT STILL WHO COULD HAVE THOUGHT 20 YEARS AGO SUCH A THING WOULD BE BAD NOW?!?

My aunt one was of them.  She had well over 300 mickey mouse things when I was growing up in the 80's (way before eBay and shiat).  The Mickey phone was the highlight of the collection.

Calm yo' tits.

Nothing is canceled. Nooses are still fine, with context. They aren't always racist, but they can be sometimes.

This is more like the "OK" sign being used to sometimes mean "white power". You can still use it to mean "OK", but be aware that it has dual meaning. You can nearly always tell what someone is using the sign for by looking for context...

But it is a terrible idea to go out to the street corner and just wave the "OK" sign at people passing by without giving them any other clues as to which meaning you are intending. This is just a poor idea, even if you mean well. Just like wearing a noose on a necklace as jewelry may be mistaken in a similar fashion if you aren't also wearing an eyepatch or something to give more context to it's meaning.

His backstory made so much sense, that I bet Alan Moore had the same basic idea about that character when he wrote the original comics. I didn't know it when I read the comics, but it fits perfect.
