He's just mad because when he says cancel something it never actually happens.

And Trump responded:  "No cancel.  No cancel.  You're the cancel!"

He's been talking about cancel culture and ratings a lot recently. He must be working on  his post-presidency plan of dethroning Fox News.

Cancel Culture = Anyone who refuses to agree with my prejudices.

Example: "You're disagreeing with me when I say black people were better off as slaves? This is Cancel Culture!"

2020-07-07 2:30:08 PM
'Cancel culture' is just the modern  conservative dog whistle for 'political correctness'. It boils down to it not being okay to be openly racist according to 'those types' so the hell with them.

Cancel culture isn't a farking thing.

People have the right to tell you to shut the fark up, and you have no right to a polite audience.   And if you did, there's a word for that: tyranny.

Oh, great. If it's his average "success", Trump trying to knock off Fox News will mean it's the only channel left on cable TV when he's done.

I should have added that's assuming you can run a TV network from prison.

I'd really, really like to cancel trump's presidency.  I'd like to do it today, but since I don't have any power under Article I, Section2 or the 25th Amendment, I guess I'll have to wait until November 3.

2020-07-07 2:34:29 PM
Well, I guess if Trump is going to launch some kind of criminal investigation into Gamergate that gets all the dudes who doxed women video game critics arrested, and forces those men to lawyer up and go through the system, even if there are no convictions because of privacy settings on XBoxLive accounts, it wills till be worth it. If they get Covid in prison, well, it might be proportionally scary to women fearing for their lives for a year or two.

I am legitimately shocked that when asked today he didn't have a problem with the NFL's plan to play Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing... well, until he said they are required to play the Star Spangled Banner too and no one is allowed to kneel during it.

Waiting for him to change gears and explicitly say that they can't sing that song because it is disrespectful to Real Americans.

Admiral Bates : Mr. Strannix... this is Admiral Bates speaking. Would you please tell us why the hell you're doing this?
William Strannix : Hi, Admiral. Six months ago, your boy Tom Breaker cancelled operation 'Cleopatra', and shortly thereafter two young men from Langley showed up in Miami tried to cancel me along with it. Now you *did* receive each man's right forefinger in the mail, didn't you Tom?
William Strannix : [pause]  TOM!
Tom Breaker : Yes, I did.
William Strannix : [incredulous]  Did you expect us to wait in Miami for you to try again?

The same conservatives that wanted to boycott the NFL because of taking a knee in protest, or wanted a boycott of every company that refused to sponsor Glen Beck's TV show, or wanted to boycott Disneyland because they offered benefits to same-sex partners of employees. . .are suddenly getting REAL upset that boycotts and similar behavior are being turned against them and their own racism.

They want to shut down every business that doesn't agree with their agenda of racism, faux patriotism, and hatred. . .but at the idea of an agenda of diversity and love?  They can't have any of that getting in the way of the racism and hate.

We also have freedom of association.  When you do something that reflects poorly on your character and people say, "God, you are an awful person, I wish to have nothing to do with you, including taking part in business with you," they are exercising that right.  If enough people say it, you will find out that no one, including your employer, will be your friend, that's on you.

(Have exercised this freedom several times over the years.  Some people are just not worth keeping in your life.)

And if they got "canceled" by enough people, like for saying or doing racist things, they wouldn't be.

Are you just pissed that enough people (and private businesses) actually agreed to "cancel" Louis CK and the Confederate flag, and not enough have agreed to cancel The Donald's favorite targets (the NYT, the Bezos Post, CNN, USAToday, HBO, etc)? Because that's just childish.

// par for the course, but childish
// PS - both Louis CK and the Confederate flag are also still around
// ...you do know that cancel culture doesn't actually murder people, right?

I mean, it can be. But cancelling is a tool and tools are value neutral. I hope these tools are used responsibly and we should keep an eye out for abuse but on the whole white supremacists, trickle down economists, flat earthers, etc. can all jump in the same sack. When the sack is beaten with a stick I'm not too concerned about who gets the worst of it. Civil, normal folk are fighting back and the bully is crying. That's what this is and nothing more.

Public opinion has always existed, and we don't need a new euphemism for people making up their minds just to make it sound scary and powerful.

Because fact is, nothing much happens to these assholes no matter how many people hate their guts.  They're rich, powerful, and largely shielded from consequences.

2020-07-08 3:51:59 PM
Yes we do. Because "public opinion" doesn't have the suggestion of associated action. Public opinion as a term suggests solely thought and mostly that it was reached after consideration. Public opinion is that waiting at the DMV is long and boring. Secondly "cancel culture" isn't a euphemism, just a term, unless there's something uglier that it is substituting for I don't know about.

Cancelling can be you and your 1000 friends DDOSing (or some non-hacker equivalent) a site of a person that you heard a broad characterization of a rumor an allegation of a misdeed. Cancelling, wrong or rightly done, has existed forever. The change over time is how powerful a movement might get from few or a single originators. Cancelling isn't opinion, it's action. Protests are opinion, la madame guillotine is action. Cancelling including both the pejorative and the non types is a decision to go to war after usually after one's mind is made up against a notional enemy with the tools at hand.

Now don't let "cancelling" as it applies specifically to powerful Republican politicians/pundits narrow your understanding of the general concept. Cancelling can apply to everyone powerful or not. It can happen to Mr. Barn the shop teacher because a disgruntled student spread a false rumor that lead to him being drummed out of the school. And really it happens more toward people you would sympathize with than those you wouldn't.

Now "cancel culture," emphasis on the culture, has everything to do with the actors and not the target. You might not think it exists because you're not in it. You probably don't wake up with the thought of "who am I going to  engineer the downfall of today." I don't either. But there is a group at any one time that do. It probably feels empowering and righteous. Who doesn't like those feelings? Some groups are spring-loaded or otherwise eager to engage in the harm aspect of cancelling much more than the understanding if the target deserves it aspect. This culture most have a population but I have no real idea if it's significant in size. I severely doubt that the main backlash against Trump is that kind of thing.

That's not to say that all or even most forms of action or protest are the negative kind of cancelling, mindless and for the sport of it. I'm not saying that just because someone can be cancelled unjustly that all cancelling is that type. I'm not saying that people wanting to take righteous action to harm those they think deserve it are necessarily wrong either.
