I did not see any comparison in size to a human in that article, just a bat dying on the ground without even a banana for scale, and a still picture, again with nothing to show scale.

So yeah, human-sized, sure.

A 1.7m wingspan is about 5.5ft, which is in the neighbourhood of a large bird. I don't think anyone would call an eagle or cormorant "human sized".

Another tremendously stupid "article" from Daily Star. It weighs all of about 3 lbs. Ooh, human sized!

And guys, I would really leave a sickly dying bat alone. That sort of thing is what got us where we are right now.

So these bats are harmless, and this one was in distress from the heat.

Anyone else mad that someone did not try and cool this poor animal off with a bit of water?

It would be creepier if it was described as s human baby sized bat. I imagine a small rat dog flying around in a diaper, crying for s bottle of your COVID spittle

Sounds like the social media tards have "discovered" flying foxes.  Human-sized? I guess, maybe, almost, if you're comparing the wingspan of the largest flying fox to the height of a small human.

\they still only weigh a few pounds, though

Why do media writers think that bats and birds stand on their finger-tips/wing-tips?

In WW2, my FIL was stationed in Guatemala, flying B24s to look for German subs prowling around the Panama canal. They had to contend with vampire bats that would come drink your blood while you were sleeping. Still lucky he didn't get sent to England, where the life expectancy of bomber pilots was very short.

Well they don't have good pics in there, but if you scroll down they have one of the bat actually hanging out off of a building, but it is a zoomed in picture of the one I submitted like 1.5 weeks ago about this.

In the article I submitted it's not cropped and shows its hanging from roofline and comes at least halfway down building.

Right? This is so sad. :(

Also, it's adorable and eats fruit. Kind of looks like a winged puppy. Poor thing.

Rabies. Checked it. Philippine fruit bats can get rabies.

It's an adorable flying vector of every viral infection you can imagine. Def cuter than the ugly-ass North American brown bats.

(the internet learns) "flying foxes are BIGGGG BATS!!! click here to learn the horrifying truth!!!"

actual truth: these bats can have a wingspan up to 5 ft, but the biggest bats on planet earth still weigh in at under 4 pounds. these guys eat fruit, are endangered, and plan on leaving you alone. so please leave them alone too!

I really try not to check the Sun's stories.  They often go either excessive T&A which is good until you see the overaugmented titilating pics, (shudder) or right off the deep end about the jagoff who threw his dog off the 3rd floor balcony and watched it die for 25 minutes.
So either the bad or worst sides of humanity.  It leaves me shaking my head at the UK more than the US often.

I have nothing against bats. They're important to the ecosystem. But they often carry disease. That is a diseased bat. Don't go near it. Kill it with a shovel and dispose of it where animals won't dig it up.

Yeah, when you say human sized generally people think about 1600mm from ground to eye level, and weighing 60 - 90 kg ish.
Not "a single dimension is roughly comparable if you spin the animal around and stretch*".

TFA says it's wingspan was 1.7 meters, AKA 5½ft, but its body was a size of a small dog. Any larger and it wouldna be able to fly.
