I don't often agree with him, in fact I can count on no hands the number of times I've agreed with him before this, but it's a valid point: CCP builds back doors into EVERYTHING.

Even if they didn't, they can just say to TikTok "give us all your user data, or we'll throw you all in prison."

That said: the timing of this is what gives it away that Trump doesn't give a fark that they're spying, he's just pissed that his rallies are getting farked with and yelled at Pompous to fix it.

Not that I don't think it's possible or even unlikely that the Chinese government is using that data in any meaningful capacity, but your link mentions no evidence random clipboard data is actually being to uploaded to China or anywhere else for that matter (All of ByteDance's servers are located in the US and in Singapore)

And it seems odd to focus only on TikTok when so many other apps were caught doing the same thing.

Considering how many TikTok users are teenagers, it seems counterproductive to use it to mine data about Americans and other people when it's probably far easier, faster, cheaper, and more reliable to simply purchase the data from the countless brokers that sell the same information that might be gleaned from a TikTok account.
Plus that can be done in secret.

This right here.

I was behind a dude buying a pack of smokes today. He was live streaming on facebook and then got pissed when the clerk asked to scan his ID. (In our state the back of the ID can be scanned to confirm age and some stores require it to ensure the ID was present).

Dude flipped the fark out. He was ranting and raving about how the guy scanning his ID for him to buy smokes was spying on him, but the fact Facebook had his location down to the foot and he had completely allowed it was some how missed on him.

It drives me nuts. I have been a gamer forever. As soon as they had Free to Play games I knew we were the things be sold. It is a trade off.

I understand the concerns some are stating, but if you use ANY free app and many paid apps, you give your permission for them to crawl up your ass like a chilean miner.

That is what is in the huge privacy notifications that most people hand wave away.

I just understand I am not that important.

Anyone whose seen me in a thread where Epic games comes up knows my opinion of any corporation that is an active front for Chinese government activities.  Tencent or TikTok, doesn't matter.  As much as I respect the accomplishments of China dragging it's average standard of living up to first world standards (although along the edges of society there are peasants still living practically dark ages lives) within the space of 50 years, their method of turning their populace into disposable worker drones and grinding them into paste to oil the mechanisms of industry combined with absolute authoritarian political control are actively the antithesis of (what should be) the American ethos.  Engaging with them through trade and slowly integrating them into the modern world was still the right decision, but the adverse aspects of their society will remain an issue for as long as they continue on that path.

That being said, what could anyone really find out about my from spying? I rarely use my phone for anything other than Fark, eBay, music apps and free games. Posting on Fark is the closest I get to social media, so this doesn't affect me at all, other than the timing of this is so obvious that this is due to Trump's hurt feelings over his rallies they supposedly messed with. The spying thing is just a convenient scapegoat. While it may be spying, this is all about his fragile ego.

Tiktok takes your copy/paste page everytime you log in - so if you have copied your password from a password wallet, they have it, etc.  Sure a lot of other apps do it, but let us be honest a US/EU app will have laws restricting it, whereas Chinese apps have no law restricting anything because the law and the app are the same thing.

TikTok is just Vine reimagined, and during the quarantine it has provided a fair amount of entertainment to me. Not every one is brilliant but some of them are certainly funny / creative. I'm not 'young' either at 37.

That's the latest issue. They're also suspected of passing all PII from user data and registrations to the Chinese govt, wholesale and unencrypted.

Well, let me give an example. Say for example that you're a federal worker. You install it on your phone. It then collects any data your phone comes across. They notice you spend a lot of time at a specific location. They discern you're a federal worker. They then start using audio snippets your phone picks up to effectively place a bug within a federal facility.

A decade ago, a jogging app used by soldiers was found to effectively be tattling on soldiers and transmitting the interior layout of high security facilities to the app owner.

The flip side of that is that the federal govt apparently allowed every person in there to carry around an Internet-connected mobile recording device in said supposedly secret/secure facility. Which Is just blisteringly stupid and should never have been allowed.

But in this case while the Admin may have ulterior motives it does look a lot like this is state funded spy software run by a totalitarian regime that is ruthlessly working to set up a comprehensive surveillance system and distribution and enforcement of state propaganda through social media at a level unlike anything else currently on earth (though the US is certainly trying).

Maybe we should be wary of it being installed on mobile microphone, surveillance camera and tracking devices carried by every teenager in the country.

Because we live in a world where internet users have the attention span of a mayfly (sic). TikTok is just the replacement of Vine, and it will be replaced by something else in two months.
Whats funny is how slow old world corporations are at adapting. Back when Pokemon Go had its three month craze, Sprint created an ad campaign that revolved around the game and they didn't release it till like months after the game was no longer popular.

Yes I know the "Total Information Management" (TIM) that we have suffered since Bush & S11 is bad and needs a hell of a lot more oversight, but a bit like people in most modern western democracies accept that cops can have guns but most of us shouldn't - TIM in the hands of an authoritarian dictator is farking dangerous to everyone.

Sure, because we know the Trump administration is very concerned with foreign spying.

Seriously, almost everything Trump has done, from demolishing every policy Obama right up to actually running for president, has been out of spite.  Tik Tok users made him look like a moron for claiming a million people would be at his Tulsa rally.  My money is on that as a reason.

Without getting into too much detail - they created lots of work for me.  TikTok was the primary social media platform that was propagating the 5G/COVID-19 conspiracy theory.

Sorry for your trouble, but disruptive conspiracy theories can come from anywhere these days.

JFC, we live in interesting times.

Except we know where the people who acted on this conspiracy found out about it.

phimuskapsi: Shagbert: That's the latest issue. They're also suspected of passing all PII from user data and registrations to the Chinese govt, wholesale and unencrypted.

I've been getting internal alerts about them at my global scale Corp since last year, and their apps and IPs have been blocked for as long from our networks and phones.

If you read the lawsuit here: https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Tiktok.pdf

They are complaining about the following:
- TikTok pre-uploads videos that you 'approve' by clicking Next. This passes it to a kind of draft status.
- TikTok stores usernames, birthdays, contacts, etc. This is all prompted when you install the app. It is not secret.
- TikTok stores unique id's of devices, again, not terribly unusual for a social media product.
- T&C/PP show accurate info, they are complaining about policies that are over a year old.

I don't think any of that is very suspicious for this kind of product/company. FB/Twitter/etc all do similar things. Hell, a lot of website do things like this, including heatmap tracking.

I am too drunk to really argue with you about the difference between corporations, governments and the CCP having you information, I shall just paste what I already posted:

Tiktok takes your copy/paste page everytime you log in - so if you have copied your password from a password wallet, they have it, etc.  Sure a lot of other apps do it, but let us be honest a US/EU app will have laws restricting it, whereas Chinese apps have no law restricting anything because the law and the app are the same thing.

You are correct re: all the bad things you assert about TikTok.  However, I believe Subby is correct as for the reason the action is being taken.  These are not mutually exclusive assertions.  TikTok bad, but the reason the Trump administration is going after them has a lot more to do with how Trump personally feels about how TikTok and the Chinese make him look.

Yes, TikTok is a Trojan horse for Chinese Gov't Spying.

It also hurt Trump's Fee-Fees.

Given the pattern of his entire "presidency" we all know which is the reason they're thinking about banning it.

I do love it when the MAGAts really want to rile themselves up, they throw the word communist in there. Not just China... COMMUNIST China. As if it were still the 1950s and we were under a Red Scare.

How closely China has adhered to its Cultural Revolution roots has nothing to do with the fact that they're a bad actor when it comes to surreptitiously collecting data on people around the world.

Considering every one of those I've entered you either couldn't carry your phone in or had to deposit it in a lockbox at the entrance.

Only if you had an iPhone, it used an exploit with the clipboard in iOS13.

TikTok is just Vine reimagined, and during the quarantine it has provided a fair amount of entertainment to me. Not every one is brilliant but some of them are certainly funny / creative. I'm not 'young' either at 37.

I find the implications for liberty of the government picking & choosing media applications to ban or allow far worse than those applications aggregating & using information their users give them voluntarily.

One should assume apps like this slurp up your use/location/etc info and use it how they want.

Assume TikTok is the absolute worst, and China's using it to track people and their videos and use and opinions, etc. So the hell what. The people using it are willingly allowing that info to be collected. It's not a damned mind control device. The gov't has no role in regulating whether individuals want to voluntarily share their info with a private company. I have no interest in allowing the government to tell me who I may or may not share my own personal info with.

Because everyone has a mama that never ever told them how untalented they were.  It used to be that you had to go on national tv, like American Idol auditions, to hear the brutal truth that while a blessed few can sing, most of us just squall and squawk.  These days, everyone has a camera and microphone handy and they are, by God, going to get discovered without having to work hard or have actual talent.
