Mrbogey: MrBallou: pxlboy: TikTok sucks.

/old

I don't know much about it (also old), but the yougnuns seem to like it a lot.

I forget why I'm supposed to be so much more scared of ChiComs than home-grown thought manipulators, anyway. Seems like the GOP/Trump people are a lot more dangerous.

Well, let me give an example. Say for example that you're a federal worker. You install it on your phone. It then collects any data your phone comes across. They notice you spend a lot of time at a specific location. They discern you're a federal worker. They then start using audio snippets your phone picks up to effectively place a bug within a federal facility.

A decade ago, a jogging app used by soldiers was found to effectively be tattling on soldiers and transmitting the interior layout of high security facilities to the app owner.

Seems to me that a rule about people in sensitive and military jobs shouldn't have third party apps in highly secured areas.

Hell we has this rule about cell phones in our server rooms when I worked at the hospital. Mainly because the dead drop terminal difnt need auth to pull patient records. It was the ultimate hard wired failsafe.

Hell issue the work phones and make them leave their personal at home.

Because the future might put you under their jurisdiction. They're bigger than the rest of the world, afterall.  I don't want to end up in a slave camp or with my organs harvested because of my ethnic heritage.  The home grown thought manipulators are assholes, but they're not that kind of asshole.

Yes they are.

Corporations, with the help of Conservative politicians, have already made workers virtual serfs with low wages and no control over their working conditions. Total power and control of the government is their ultimate goal and American democracy will be a thing of the past if they get their way.

ChiliBoots: drumhellar: Considering how many TikTok users are teenagers, it seems counterproductive to use it to mine data about Americans and other people when it's probably far easier, faster, cheaper, and more reliable to simply purchase the data from the countless brokers that sell the same information that might be gleaned from a TikTok account.
Plus that can be done in secret.

They could be playing a bit of a long game going after teenagers who'll be in positions of influence in the future.

Also, knowing the social networking contacts of the younger Chinese diaspora, including their non-Chinese friends could create opportunities for leverage when they feel the need to put a lid on criticism abroad. Sure 99% of the information is useless, but it's cheap to collect.

You mean sort of like Russia's been doing to the GOP through the Tea Party at first, then through FaceBook and other outlets of propaganda?

Ken S.: Forget whether they should do this, I want to know how they think they can do it against a bunch of tech savvy teenagers.

Hell, if they succeed in banning these I will install the apps myself and I am not exactly a teenager.

Peter Ansprach's EVIL OVERLORD list has an entry for that.

(from memory) If I ever have to choose between an industry leading IT expert and a lovesick teen-age whiz kid trying to impress his girlfriend, I will take the whiz kid and let the hero get stuck with the egg head.

mrshowrules: feckingmorons: India banned it last week.
Tiktok will lose six billion dollars. https://www.forbes.com/sites/zakdoffman/2020/07/04/tiktok-loses-6-billion-as-users-urged-delete-app-immediately/#7d689c521c98

How does tiktok make money?
If you like it keep it, enjoy the Chinese Communist Party spying on you.

I'm just curious, did you have issues with Tiktok before dear leader said it was bad?

Other than it is spyware (as are most applications) nope. I still don't, it is your phone if you want to be spied upon live it up.

1: Apple App Store and Android Store
2: Ban Tik Tok from US banking system
3: Tik Tok dies

/did you know that #2 is so scary that Russia's biggest (State) bank doesn't have a branch in Crimea for that reason?

I'm ok with this. fark any technology from China, full of spyware instead of good wholesome adware based on geofencing and mobile id tracking
