GregInIndy: I find the implications for liberty of the government picking & choosing media applications to ban or allow far worse than those applications aggregating & using information their users give them voluntarily.

One should assume apps like this slurp up your use/location/etc info and use it how they want.

Assume TikTok is the absolute worst, and China's using it to track people and their videos and use and opinions, etc. So the hell what. The people using it are willingly allowing that info to be collected. It's not a damned mind control device. The gov't has no role in regulating whether individuals want to voluntarily share their info with a private company. I have no interest in allowing the government to tell me who I may or may not share my own personal info with.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Libertarian party has arrived to remind you why it doesn't work.  Say hello, everyone.

mrshowrules: puffy999: TikTok was bad before Trump gave a shiat.

I'm not disputing that but it is quite shocking how Trump not liking something will so quick to trigger so many people who never gave a thought of it before.

It is.... infuriating that a significant portion of the country needs their master to declare something to be true before they'll even consider it existing.

But in this case while the Admin may have ulterior motives it does look a lot like this is state funded spy software run by a totalitarian regime that is ruthlessly working to set up a comprehensive surveillance system and distribution and enforcement of state propaganda through social media at a level unlike anything else currently on earth (though the US is certainly trying).

Maybe we should be wary of it being installed on mobile microphone, surveillance camera and tracking devices carried by every teenager in the country.

Hell, if they succeed in banning these I will install the apps myself and I am not exactly a teenager.

So average Americans using Tik-Tok is a security threat but Jared using What's App to conduct what ever government business he does is okay?

BTW why should I be concerned about the Chines Communist Party spying on me, because they're Chinese or communists? Are they going to sap my vital forces by fluridating my water?

NathanAllen: Langdon_777: China is an authoritarian dictatorship, no company from China is not beholdant to the CCP and Xi, every Chinese company should be approached as dealing directly with the CCP and Xi.  If you think they treat their own people badly, then remember that to them outsiders are worse than dogs, because at least you can eat dogs.

Ladies and Gentlemen, behold the results of drinking too much of the orange Kool-Aid.

I may have lost your point in all of the racism, is it that we should have engagement with China to ensure the edges of our spheres of influence are smooth?

Where was the racism, I have a problem with the CCP a political juggernaut that is a threat to the entire planet, the Chinese people most of all?

And I don't want the government dictating who I'm allowed to talk to or share my info with, be it Zuckerberg or Twitter or some Chinese company surely sharing my use info with the Chinese gov't.

I don't know much about it (also old), but the yougnuns seem to like it a lot.

I forget why I'm supposed to be so much more scared of ChiComs than home-grown thought manipulators, anyway. Seems like the GOP/Trump people are a lot more dangerous.

Well, let me give an example. Say for example that you're a federal worker. You install it on your phone. It then collects any data your phone comes across. They notice you spend a lot of time at a specific location. They discern you're a federal worker. They then start using audio snippets your phone picks up to effectively place a bug within a federal facility.

A decade ago, a jogging app used by soldiers was found to effectively be tattling on soldiers and transmitting the interior layout of high security facilities to the app owner.

LowbrowDeluxe: Anyone whose seen me in a thread where Epic games comes up knows my opinion of any corporation that is an active front for Chinese government activities.  Tencent or TikTok, doesn't matter.  As much as I respect the accomplishments of China dragging it's average standard of living up to first world standards (although along the edges of society there are peasants still living practically dark ages lives) within the space of 50 years, their method of turning their populace into disposable worker drones and grinding them into paste to oil the mechanisms of industry combined with absolute authoritarian political control are actively the antithesis of (what should be) the American ethos.  Engaging with them through trade and slowly integrating them into the modern world was still the right decision, but the adverse aspects of their society will remain an issue for as long as they continue on that path.

You sure that's not the American ethos? It really feels like current America.

I do love it when the MAGAts really want to rile themselves up, they throw the word communist in there. Not just China... COMMUNIST China. As if it were still the 1950s and we were under a Red Scare.

How closely China has adhered to its Cultural Revolution roots has nothing to do with the fact that they're a bad actor when it comes to surreptitiously collecting data on people around the world.

Of course, if they're tracking location, it tells them who else works at the facility based on whose phone keeps getting dropped off there.

If you read the lawsuit here: https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Tiktok.pdf

They are complaining about the following:
- TikTok pre-uploads videos that you 'approve' by clicking Next. This passes it to a kind of draft status.
- TikTok stores usernames, birthdays, contacts, etc. This is all prompted when you install the app. It is not secret.
- TikTok stores unique id's of devices, again, not terribly unusual for a social media product.
- T&C/PP show accurate info, they are complaining about policies that are over a year old.

I don't think any of that is very suspicious for this kind of product/company. FB/Twitter/etc all do similar things. Hell, a lot of website do things like this, including heatmap tracking.

You are correct re: all the bad things you assert about TikTok.  However, I believe Subby is correct as for the reason the action is being taken.  These are not mutually exclusive assertions.  TikTok bad, but the reason the Trump administration is going after them has a lot more to do with how Trump personally feels about how TikTok and the Chinese make him look.

Hey, genius. Do you put in your bio your security level and all secure facilities you have access to? Do you take pictures of your co-workers there and tag them saying "this is Bill Johnson, he works alongside me analyzing Chinese Naval maneuvers". No? You don't? Why? You just said it has no bearing on operational security.

Because absolutely if China wants to spy on you the ONLY way they'll do it is by walking up and asking you questions. They wouldn't try and surveil you covertly, hack your email, gather intel to blackmail you with. No, they'd never do that.

Tiktok takes your copy/paste page everytime you log in - so if you have copied your password from a password wallet, they have it, etc.  Sure a lot of other apps do it, but let us be honest a US/EU app will have laws restricting it, whereas Chinese apps have no law restricting anything because the law and the app are the same thing.

As I said above, sure - if you are an iPhone user. I'm not.

To sell products in the US you have to meet our standards. You can't just treat your goods as a sovereign nation.

TrollingForColumbine: wademh: I think TikTok is bad but think Trump's action on this will be as effective as the movie Reefer Madness

Reefer madness was pretty effective. There are still people around the were significantly influenced by it.

I know I was. I couldn't wait to get in on the action.

Langdon_777: Sugarmoobs: I think a lot of Fark users are a bit more tech savvy and may have more of a clue as to TikTok and the spying than I. I have always assumed anything on my phone was being tracked just because of the agreements you sign when you download any app.

That being said, what could anyone really find out about my from spying? I rarely use my phone for anything other than Fark, eBay, music apps and free games. Posting on Fark is the closest I get to social media, so this doesn't affect me at all, other than the timing of this is so obvious that this is due to Trump's hurt feelings over his rallies they supposedly messed with. The spying thing is just a convenient scapegoat. While it may be spying, this is all about his fragile ego.

As a user of computers, who in the absolute fark copy and paste their password.

Yeah I wanna take a phrase that a keylogger would have to capture, and copy it into raw text before pasting it.

That is, how you say, not a smart way to input a password.

Target Builder: mrshowrules: puffy999: TikTok was bad before Trump gave a shiat.

Facebook and Twitter's main backers are russian.

We should delete them too, right?

I mean I dont social media so it wouldn't hurt me, but at what point do you draw the line as to the interaction with foreign powers?

Anyone remember cambridge analytical? How Facebook and then were stealing huge amounts of data to sway presidental electrons and such, and no one gave a fat shiat?

I am not saying tik tok is good, but the last game I installed on my phone wanted access to my gmail, pictures, mic and camera. I didnt do it, but it is a popular game and more than a million have. So it is a choice, a bad choice but still a choice.

MrBallou: I forget why I'm supposed to be so much more scared of ChiComs than home-grown thought manipulators, anyway. Seems like the GOP/Trump people are a lot more dangerous.

Because the future might put you under their jurisdiction. They're bigger than the rest of the world, afterall.  I don't want to end up in a slave camp or with my organs harvested because of my ethnic heritage.  The home grown thought manipulators are assholes, but they're not that kind of asshole.
